Not to be confused with Tuffy Smurf.

Weakling (original French name Schtroumpf Chétif) is a minor character of the Smurfs comic books, the 1980s Smurfs cartoon show, and the 2021 Smurfs cartoon show.

His character was voiced by Alan Young in the 1980s series and Ilse La Monaca starting in the 2021 series.

Character[]

The weakest Smurf alive, Weakling can't even open a jar. He often desires to be like Hefty, who is already the strongest Smurf alive, but he fails at his attempts.

In the 2021 TV series, he is renamed Wimpy Smurf. This series and Grandir avec les Schtroumpfs onwards portray Weakling to be the weakest Smurf and is often teased by his fellow Smurfs. This is retconned from his appearance in "A Little Smurf Confidence".

Personality[]

He is a Smurf with very low self-esteem who thinks he's worthless. But in the end, he built up his strength, confidence, and willpower and became the second strongest Smurf after Hefty.

Weakling's appearance in the comic book story "The Olympic Smurfs", shows how much his confidence can go. Since neither the yellow team nor the red team want him, he competes on his own as green team. Papa Smurf gives him a formula to apply on his nose. He does, and he wins all the games, only to discover the formula was mere fruit jelly that Papa Smurf gave him as a placebo to have confidence. Unfortunately, by the story's end, he did not get the promised kiss from Smurfette, as Brainy ruins the moment by giving her a pink card and she ends up walking off with him.

Another side of his confidence is shown in "The Magic Pumpkin". Wanting to be scary for Halloween, Smurfette gives him a pumpkin and lies, saying that it is magical. Wimpy believes the lie, with his intelligence overthrown by his confidence, and goes around "scaring" the Smurfs. However, Wimpy shows signs of actual confidence when saving Smurfette from Bigmouth.

Achievements[]

In "A Little Smurf Confidence", Hefty tries to move some logs, but he gets knocked unconscious during a storm and drifts down the river. Weakling swims out to pull Hefty to safety. Then lightning knocks some boulders loose, and they tumble down toward the bridge, causing it to be unstable. With the Smurfs trapped on the bridge, Weakling puts on an extra dose of "Can Do It Cream" (which is what Papa Smurf gave him to boost his confidence) and then goes down to the bottom of the bridge to hold up its supports long enough for the Smurfs to get off the bridge before it collapses, with Weakling being the last to get out of the way. The "Can Do It Cream" turns out to just be smurfberry jam and Weakling really saved Hefty. This is where he is awarded as the second strongest Smurf.

In "Who's Heftier?", he does a whole push-up, much to the surprise and cheer of the other Smurfs. Later, when he and Hefty have a competition, Hefty accidentally trips and Wimpy ends up winning. He is crowned "The Strongest Smurf" even though this victory was a fake. When they have a rematch due to Smurfette masquerading as "The Great Cassandra" and lying to the Smurfs that a meteorite will fall on the "Strongest Smurf", Wimpy ends up winning again, but the meteorite turns out to be real. The Smurfs believe Wimpy has saved their life. However, the meteorite example and the competition example cannot properly be counted as achievements, since this was due to coincidences and accidents.

In "The Magic Pumpkin", when Smurfette is captured by Bigmouth, Wimpy uses his large pumpkin to scare him via shadow. When Bigmouth is afraid and runs out of his house, he is happy about this success. This achievement counts as one of Wimpy's victories.

Trivia[]

  • In the American Dad episode "The Scarlett Getter", Weakling Smurf was called Wimpy Smurf. Steve needed Haley underwear for luck, but Hayley explains to Steve how Wimpy (Weakling) Smurf didn't have any confidence within himself, so Papa Smurf claimed he had made for him a magic Can Do It Cream potion so he could be better at everything which turned out to be smurfberry jam, referencing "A Little Smurf Confidence".
    • In the 2021 cartoon show, he is called Wimpy, meaning this might have been a coincidence.
