Timeline

1928

  • June 25 - Pierre Culliford (Peyo) was born in Brussels, Belgium.

1947

  • Peyo's first creation, "Johan" 'was first published on newspaper.

1949

  • January 22 - Another Peyo's creation, Poussy, was published on newspaper.

1952

  • Johan was published on the French magazine 'Spirou'. While the the appearance of Johan was changed from blond-hair to dark-hair.

  • April 20 - The theme park, 'Big Bang Schtroumpfs' changed its name to 'Walibi Schtroumpf', Smurfs attractions at there were kept the same until 2003.

1992

  • The 16th Smurf comic book, 'The Finance Smurf' was published. This was the last Smurfs comic book by Peyo before his death.
  • December 24 - Peyo died of heart attack at the age of 63. Since then, his son Thierry Culliford continued his father's work.

  • June 7 - The 11th Benny Breakiron comic book, 'The Southern Road' was published.
  • Following the predecessor, The Smurfs Go Pop! Again album was released.

1998

  • The Smurfs Greatest Hits album was released.
  • May 16 - The 16th Johan and Peewit comic book, 'The Night Of The Sorcerers' was published.
  • November 7 - The 19th Smurf comic book 'The Wild Smurf' comic book was published. Featuring the comic book debut of Wild Smurf.

1999

  • June 12 - The 12th Benny Breakiron comic book, 'The Secret Of Eglantine' was published.
  • Infogrames' 1999 Smurfs video game was released in Europe and North America for the Sony Playstation.

  • The game 'Smurf Racer' was released for Sony Playstation and Microsoft Window.
  • May 12 - The last Johan and Peewit comic book, 'The Rose Of The Sand' was published

2002

  • August 24 - The 13th Benny Breakiron comic book, 'Chocolates And Underhanded Tricks' was published.
  • November 1 - The 21st Smurf comic book, 'You Don't Smurf Progress' was published.

2003

  • April 19 - The theme park 'Walibi Schtroumpf' changed its name to 'Walibi Lorraine' and re-opened on that day. However, all Smurf attractions were removed during renovations in the park during 2002 to 2003.
  • November 1 - The 22nd Smurf comic book, 'The Reporter Smurf' was published. Introducing the comic debut of Reporter Smurf.

  • November 6 - The 14th Benny Breakiron comic book, 'John-John' was published.

  • January 13 - The 24th Smurf comic book, 'Salad Smurfs' was published.

  • January 12 - The 25th Smurf comic book, 'A Child Among The Smurfs' was published.

  • March 19 - Fabulous Films and Arrow Films secured the UK DVD rights to the Smurfs cartoon show.
  • April 16 - The 28th Smurf comic book, 'The Grand Smurfette' was published.
  • Papercutz acquired the rights to the Smurfs graphic novels for translation from French to English for North America.
  • August 31 - The first Smurfs comic book published by Papercutz, 'The Purple Smurfs' was published in English North America.
  • Smurfs' Village gaming application was released for Apple and Android devices.

  • March 23 - The 30th Smurf comic book, 'The Smurfs Of Order' was published.
  • June 25 - The Smurfs Store was opened in Brussels, along with the Smurf statue unraveled. On the same day, the second Global Smurfs Day was celebrated worldwide as well to honour Peyo's birthday.
  • December - Smurf Life was released for Apple and Android devices.
  • 'The Smurfs' (2011 film) won the BAFTA's Kids Vote Film awards.
