Plot Summary[]

Hefty and Handy are having fun playing with Baby Smurf on a seesaw built in the Smurf Village, with Hefty saying that he could do this all day, when Papa Smurf comes along with Brainy and asks them if they have finished repairs on the bridge yet. Hefty and Handy stop their playtime and answer that they have lost their track of time. Brainy says that they need a way to keep track of time so that they would have better use of it.

Brainy's Dastardly Time Plot

Brainy relishes in the thought of how he will change the face of the way things are done in the village on time.

Handy is inspired by Brainy's words, and soon the Smurfs see that he is at work building a new invention which has taken him days to build without any sleep or rest. Then with Harmony's horn signal, Handy unveils the very thing he was working on -- the very first Clockwork Time Smurfer -- which makes the other Smurfs gasp in wonder. Handy explains how his fellow Smurfs will read the time from the clock, and from this Brainy is inspired to put everybody on a time schedule so that work in the village could be done more efficiently. Papa Smurf isn't sure about Brainy's plan for a time schedule, but then decides to give him three days to test out his plan and tells his other little Smurfs that they should cooperate with Brainy's plan. Brainy is rubbing his palms together, thinking about how things will run better in the village with his time schedule.

After Brainy passes out copies of his time schedule for every Smurf, which they briefly read only to find that they wouldn't have enough time to do everything in the schedule, the Time Smurfer's buzzer sounds, and every Smurf is now at work frantically trying to keep up with the schedule. Smurfette and Farmer are rushing through harvesting the smurfberries with Lazy trying to catch each one that is picked from the bush. Painter is trying to finish a portrait of Vanity and Baby Smurf, with Baby crying for his diaper that needs changing, and Tailor is trying to sew up Papa Smurf's pants on time when he looks at the work and sees that he doesn't have time to do it right. The same thought is also shared by Painter with his work and by Smurfette, Farmer, and Lazy with their work, but then the buzzer sounds, and the Smurfs are quickly rushed to do another task while Brainy calmly monitors all activities to make sure everything is in order.

The Smurfs turn to Papa Smurf and address their concerns about Brainy's time schedule which is driving them crazy. Papa Smurf tells them that they have two more days to deal with the time schedule, and as they depart, he begins to wonder if Brainy has gone overboard with it. By nightfall, as Brainy has everybody go to their beds to sleep at the sound of the buzzer and then patrols the village to make sure everybody is asleep, Handy, Smurfette, Painter, Farmer, and Lazy convene together in secret to conceive their own plan of showing how useless Brainy's time schedule really is.

Handy and his fellow Smurfs go to the Time Smurfer and work together on altering the mechanism so that it will speed up, all the while trying to keep Brainy from noticing what they are doing to the Time Smurfer. With Painter changing the Smurf face on the clock so that it resembles Brainy's image, the Smurfs then slip back to their own houses and wait for the following day to sabotage Brainy's time schedule.

The following day, Papa Smurf has Hefty chop down a big tree near the village that he fears may end up falling right onto it because the tree is so old and rotten. Greedy is in his kitchen doing all the preparations for the Funny Cake Day party and other related meals when the buzzer suddenly sounds, drawing his attention away from the cooking on the stove and towards the party. Hefty also hears the buzzer and leaves off the rest of the tree-chopping to attend the party, not noticing the crack in the tree his axe has created.

At the party, Papa Smurf is looking forward to a relaxing time to enjoy himself, but Smurfette says that because of Brainy's time schedule, it is now time for Papa Smurf to tell Baby Smurf a story. Papa Smurf gets ready to tell Baby a story when the buzzer sounds and Greedy says it's time for his Funny Cake Day soup. Papa Smurf tries to enjoy the soup, but barely even has a spoonful when the buzzer sounds again and Greedy replaces the soup with Papa Smurf's special Funny Day Cake. Papa Smurf looks at Brainy, wondering what he is up to, but his suspicions go away as soon as his Funny Cake appears with a candle on its nose. The Smurfs tell him to make a wish and blow out the candles, but Papa Smurf barely has time to think of a wish before the buzzer sounds yet again and the cake is taken away.

Papa Smurf again looks at Brainy, wondering why his day of enjoyment is now put on a time schedule, while nobody notices that the old tree near the village is ready to fall and that the food cooking on Greedy's stove in the kitchen is now boiling over and starting a fire. Papa Smurf is even more perplexed when his Funny Cake Day present has been taken away before he even has a chance to open it and Clumsy is then told to clear the tables, which he does by simply yanking the tablecloth and spilling some cake on Papa Smurf's face. When the Smurfs all explain that they're trying to keep on Brainy's time schedule, Brainy is beginning to wonder how everything has turned out wrong.

But then their concerns turn to two other things: Greedy's kitchen is now on fire, spreading the fire over onto other houses. Papa Smurf at first has the fire brigade work on putting out the fire while Lazy takes Baby Smurf to safety. But when the old tree collapses right on top of Greedy's house and sets Brainy's on fire as well as the fire engine, the village leader calls for a bucket brigade to work together. Papa Smurf scolds Hefty for not keeping to his task of chopping down the tree, but Hefty says he was too busy with trying to keep with Brainy's time schedule. Smurfette and the other Smurfs confess that they have purposely sped up the clock because they couldn't tolerate Brainy's time schedule anymore.

Soon with the fire put out, Brainy confesses that with his house being burnt down, all the copies of the time schedule were destroyed with it, which makes the other Smurfs cheer. Papa Smurf tells Brainy that Smurfs don't need a time schedule, that Smurfs need to have time to work and play. Handy wonders what to do now with the Time Smurfer, and Papa Smurf comes up with an idea. At Mother Nature's house, as the guardian of nature enjoys a little jam and bread with Father Time, the guardian of time is presented with a gift of the Time Smurfer, which Mother Nature sees would make a perfect hat rack. Father Time jokingly agrees that it's the thing that he always wanted, but he just never had the time to look for one.
