Plot Summary[]
Papa Smurf is sitting in his house with his right leg wrapped in a bandage, complaining about the gout he has with Brainy present. Smurfette and Clumsy come in to visit Papa Smurf, with Smurfette bringing him flowers to make him feel better. Papa Smurf asks Clumsy to get the vase from the bookshelf, and Clumsy turns to see that he will need something to stand on in order to get it. He takes the stool that Papa Smurf is resting his right foot on, causing him to yelp in pain so loudly that the other Smurfs in the village hear it.
Refusing to sit still any longer, Papa Smurf gets up and about on crutches to tell his little Smurfs about a secret: behind the waterfalls in the distant valley of Notrod, there is a cave that contains a stone called the Smurfstone that according to his books has magical healing powers, which may be the only thing that can cure his gout. Brainy volunteers to be the one to lead the expedition to find the Smurfstone, but when Papa Smurf mentions the Molians who live in the cave that guard the Smurfstone, Brainy believes it would be best for him to stay behind and tend to Papa Smurf's needs. Papa Smurf agrees to Brainy's reasoning and says that he will need three volunteers who will go and find the Smurfstone. Hefty offers to be the leader because he's the strongest, while Handy offers to be the leader because he believes it will take some ingenuity to get the Smurfstone. Papa Smurf accepts both of them as volunteers, saying that they could work together, and now he only needs one more volunteer to go with Hefty and Handy. As the other Smurfs raise their hands, Lazy stretches his arm over the others while he yawns, and Papa Smurf takes that as Lazy choosing to be the third volunteer. While the other Smurfs as well as Lazy himself wonder why he is chosen, Papa Smurf tells each of the three Smurf volunteers that they must use their talents wisely to help each other out, with Lazy's attribute being his "calmness" in the face of danger. Though Hefty and Handy are unsure about taking Lazy along as a third-party member, they nonetheless set off into the forest with the rest of the Smurfs wishing them good luck and a safe journey.
As the three of them proceed to the valley to Notrod, Hefty and Handy argue with each other over who built the village dam, with Hefty saying he did all the heavy lifting and the only heavy thing Handy lifted was a pencil. Upon entering the valley, the fog gets so thick that Hefty says that what he wishes to have right now is a map, but Lazy thinks Hefty says a nap and agrees that it's a good idea. As they get closer to the waterfall, which Hefty spots with the cave behind it when they reach it, Handy notices that there are no sounds of birds or any wildlife in the vicinity. However, there is an arm that reaches out of a hole in the rock wall and some low garbling sounds coming out of the hole, which none of the three Smurfs notice.
Seeing that the cave is dark, Handy lights up a torch to help them see their way through when the same arm reaches out and causes an avalanche of rocks to fall upon the three Smurfs. Fortunately, they dodged the rocks so that none of them were hurt, but now they are trapped with only a limited amount of air. Hefty decides to apply his muscle power to the situation, and the other two Smurfs help in clearing the way of rocks, making Handy realize that having Hefty along was a good idea. Proceeding further into the cave, Handy slips and nearly falls off a precipice into a ravine so deep that it makes Lazy gulp. Handy pulls a rope out of his backpack and lassos it onto a rock on the other side of the ravine, and after tying it to the rock on his end, he slides across the rope to the other side. Hefty and Lazy follow shortly after, but then they have new problems: Handy sees a group of tall furry beings with arms and legs carrying spears appearing behind Hefty and Lazy. They see them and realize that these must be the Molians that Papa Smurf had warned them about, but no sooner do they see the Molians do they get captured by them.
The three Smurfs are taken into a cavern where an assembly of Molians have gathered around their leader, a gray-haired being with a crown, for whom the speaker says that the creatures they captured must be dragons. Hefty and Handy try to tell the Molians that they are Smurfs, but when Hefty asks if they can see, he examines the Molian speaker and realizes that they have tiny eyes hidden under their hair and thus they can't see well. The Molian speaker says for the leader that they will make sure that the Smurfs are not dragons. One of their tests is with a Molian that has big hands, and he uses them to feel the Smurfs to make sure they are not dragons, though it makes Lazy feel ticklish. The second test is with a Molian with a big nose, and he sniffs the three Smurfs to make sure that they are not dragons. But when it comes to the third test, a Molian with big teeth who will taste them to make sure that they are not dragons, the three Smurfs flee into the caves hoping to escape, only to find themselves trapped in a dead end with the Molians coming. Hefty considers the possibility of climbing up the wall out of the cave, but seeing that it would take too long, Lazy decides on a different course of action: he snores very loudly, causing the sound to echo off the cave walls and make the Molians think that they have entered a cave of dragons, causing them to flee from the cave.
Hefty and Handy congratulate Lazy for his unique plan of escape, and then Handy notices another cave where the Molians say is the dragon's nest. Hefty volunteers to go in before the others to see how safe it is, and then reports that the cave is hot and there's a bright light in it, but besides that there's a giant egg. The three Smurfs go inside the cave and see that the giant egg is the Smurfstone, which Handy knew what it was from the clue the Molians had given about feeling heat from the dragon's cave. The three Smurfs emerge back to the surface with the Smurfstone in hand, saying that it's great to be a Smurf.
Upon their arrival in the village, the other Smurfs give Handy, Hefty, and Lazy three cheers for their successful journey, with Hefty and Handy saying that Lazy is the real hero. Papa Smurf is glad for the three of them working together, saying that they not only found the Smurfstone, but also the natural worth of their fellow Smurfs. Now he wants to see if the Smurfstone's healing power works, and so Clumsy volunteers to deliver the stone to Papa Smurf, but he trips and falls, causing the stone to shatter on Papa Smurf's foot. His toes peek out of the bandage, and Papa Smurf says that his gout is cured, but now he thinks that the stone had broken his toe.
