The Smurfs join forces with Sir Lancelot to rescue Excalibur and restore Camelot.

In Camelot, England, King Arthur from his Royal Box happily observes a jousting tournament he is holding outside his castle grounds, but his advisor and court magician Merlin is too distracted by dark clouds appearing over the sky to pay attention to the event. When Arthur takes note of this, Merlin apologizes, explaining that he senses that something evil is stirring, a sentiment that even his sentient magic wand Sir Will shares. King Arthur assures Merlin not to fear, for as long as he holds the sword Excalibur, Camelot will be safe. He tells Merlin to relax and enjoy the festivities, giving the magician such an unintentionally hard pat on the back that it knocks him off the platform, requiring Sir Will to conjure up a pillow to literally cushion him in his fall.

As another joust begins to take place, the time whirlwind appears in the middle of the playing field, and the time-lost Smurfs now appear with the males wearing knights' armor and the females dressed as princesses. Hearing what at first sounds like rumbling thunder, they barely have time to avoid the horses approaching them from opposite directions and to take cover under a stage, but after they reach safety, Smurfette peeks out and, seeing a handsome knight acting chivalrously toward a young lady, finds herself attracted to him despite an obviously jealous Hefty voicing his disapproval. The Smurfs peek out together after they hear the sound of actual thunder, and both Papa Smurf and Grandpa Smurf find themselves surprised to see "the greatest wizard that ever lived", Merlin, standing with King Arthur. The magician decides to do something about the downpour, and so by raising his magic wand, he creates a hole in the clouds above the tournament, where the weather is bright and clear.

The Smurfs are amazed by what they have just seen Merlin do, particularly Papa Smurf, who now wonders if he will ever have the chance to meet the wizard face to face. His little Smurfs think that Papa Smurf should go and meet Merlin, but as they drag him out into the open, a rumbling sound is heard as something emerges from the ground underneath the humans. It is the Dark Knight with a fierce red-and-blue hawk perched on his shoulder, and he is clearly looking for trouble. Sir Lancelot, the knight Smurfette saw earlier, charges at the Dark Knight with two of his men to cut the evil brute down to size, but instead the Dark Knight just tosses aside them aside, causing them to land in a puddle.

King Arthur confronts the Dark Knight, saying that he doesn't stand a chance against Excalibur, but just as soon as he raises his sword in the air, the Dark Knight's hawk steals Excalibur away and then transforms into a evil-looking crone dressed in the red and blue apparel of a noble lady, proclaiming that she now possesses the most powerful magic in all the land. Merlin recognizes her as Arthur's archenemy, the evil witch Morgan le Fey, and so tries to use his magic wand against her, but Morgan uses the sword to turn him into a rock. King Arthur sees that the two men he sends against Morgan are instantly turned to wax with the power of Excalibur, so he tries to make a run for it, only to also be turned to wax by the same power Morgan now wields. Sir Lancelot attempts to stop Morgan, but she shrinks him down to Smurf-size and mockingly dubs him "Sir Lancelittle". After turning the castle of Camelot into wax, Morgan casts a spell to make the sun burn hotter so that it, King Arthur and his legendary knights will all be melted away. Sir Lancelot despite his now small size attempts to make one more run toward Morgan to stop her, but the Dark Knight kicks the diminutive brave knight away before he and his mistress depart with Excalibur.

The Smurfs see that Camelot is now doomed, and Papa Smurf sees that Merlin has been reduced to nothing more than a rock, proclaiming it to be a waste of a wonderful wizard. But apparently all is not lost yet, as the rock now murmurs something to get their attention. By turning it over, the Smurfs find to their astonishment Merlin's face on the other side of the rock now speaking. Sir Lancelot falls out of the tree and lands on Hefty and Clumsy, and although no one is hurt, Smurfette shows more concern about the well-being of the human knight than her two friends, much to Hefty's disgust. Merlin immediately recognizes Papa Smurf as a fellow wizard, with Grandpa Smurf revealing to him that he's been Papa Smurf's hero ever since he was a little Smurfling. Merlin then charges Papa Smurf with the responsibility of rescuing Excalibur and saving Camelot. But Merlin's conversation with the Smurfs is observed, through a scrying crystal on the hilt of Excalibur, by Morgan le Fey, who says that the wizard must have rocks in his head if he thinks that the little blue knights can stop her. She takes Excalibur and with it commands the Dark Knight to go and squash the little troublemakers. In his haste to fulfill his mistress' orders, though, the Dark Knight breaks through the wall of Morgan's castle, instead of using the door.

As a group of Smurfs get to work on building a giant fan to keep King Arthur and his knights cool while the sun continues to scorch, Merlin says that since he's now a rock, Papa Smurf will have to be the one to cast the magic spells. Papa Smurf says that he will do his best as Sir Will lowers himself down to be placed in Papa Smurf's hand. Merlin says that it's a long and treacherous road to Morgan's castle, so they will need sturdy horses that are swift of foot. Sir Lancelot says that the finest steeds are at his fingertips, and so with a whistle he summons a few horses, though they prove to be too big for the Smurfs to ride as they charge so suddenly the Smurfs and Lancelot had to dive out of the way before the steeds come to a full stop. Merlin says that they will need to shrink the horses down to size if they intend to ride them, and so Papa Smurf decides to give Merlin's wand a try, although his first attempt makes the horses much bigger than they were originally. With the horses now shrunk to Smurf-size, a group of Smurfs choose to mount up and ride off to deal with Morgan le Fey while Handy and another group stay behind to keep King Arthur and his men from melting away.

Along the way to Morgan's castle, the horse-riding Smurfs come across a dark and forbidding forest which makes Smurfette wonder if they're supposed to be going that way, and Sir Lancelot assures her that it is. Soon the Dark Knight bursts out of a mound of rock and hoists up a rock that he intends to use against the Smurfs. Papa Smurf tries to use Merlin's magic wand to stop the Dark Knight, but the magic bolts just bounce off the armor, and Papa Smurf has to duck a stray bolt to avoid getting hit by the rebound. The Smurfs see that the Dark Knight is ready to pulverize them with the rock hoisted high above his head, and after Merlin telling Papa Smurf that the armor's metal must be protected by Excalibur, Papa Smurf comes up with an idea. He uses Sir Will to turn a nearby giant rock into a magnet, and soon the Dark Knight finds himself helplessly attracted and unable to escape. Unfortunately, the Smurfs find themselves attracted to the magnet rock as well, as it's now pulling on every metal thing they're wearing. Merlin tells Papa Smurf to use Sir Will to turn his armor to wood, and so he transforms himself and his little Smurfs to wearing wooden armor, stopping them from being "fatally attracted" to the magnet rock that the Dark Knight is still trapped by.

In her castle, Morgan le Fey sees through the scrying crystal of Excalibur that her Dark Knight has failed, and so she decides that she's going to deal with the Smurfs herself. As she gets up from her throne and walks off, she accidentally drops Excalibur to the floor, and is startled to see the sword let out a discharge of magical energy that creates a big hole in the ceiling. Observing that the magic sword packs quite a wallop, Morgan gleefully imagines what it will do to Merlin and "those blasted blue brats", before she transforms into her hawk form and takes off into the sky carrying Excalibur in her talons.

Meanwhile, the Smurfs are now traveling through the Fire Swamp, a dismal and rather dangerous location that gives Clumsy a hot seat as one of the flames nearly singes his behind. Merlin says that going through the Fire Swamp is the only way to reach Morgan's castle. As Smurfette is approaching a mud puddle, Sir Lancelot steps in and lays down his cloak to protect her feet from being soiled. Hefty becomes even more jealous of the attention Smurfette's knight is getting and tries to do the same thing with his cloak over another puddle, but Smurfette instead sinks into the ground, with her so displeased with Hefty that she says from now on his name is mud.

While the group of Smurfs back at the castle grounds of Camelot continue to try keeping King Arthur and his men from melting into puddles of wax, the other group led by Papa Smurf have now reached Morgan le Fey's castle, but just before they reach the castle gates, Morgan herself drops down from the sky and changes from her bird form and uses Excalibur to make a giant frying pan appear around the Smurfs. Papa Smurf asks Merlin what they're going to do now as they are busy hopping around from one foot to the other to avoid burning their feet on the heated metal, and Merlin says that he's hard-pressed to come up with anything so it's now up to Papa Smurf to come up with a solution. He uses Sir Will to make a giant bucket of water appear over them to douse the heat, and suddenly the water makes the frying pan disappear.

Frustrated that her enemies have found a way out through Merlin's magic, Morgan uses Excalibur to make a three-headed hellhound appear to deal with the Smurfs. As Papa Smurf tries to call upon Merlin's help to deal with the hellhound, the stone bearing his face is knocked loose and sent rolling down the hill into falling into the water, sinking like a stone to the bottom. Papa Smurf sees that he will have to take care of the hellhound by himself, and so with Sir Will, he transforms a bush into a three-headed hellcat, who the hellhound then chases after. Morgan tries to stop the hellhound, but the dog bumps into her in his pursuit of the hellcat, knocking Excalibur out of her hands. It lands next to the Smurfs, and Sir Lancelot tries to take possession of it, but Morgan quickly grabs it before he does and prepares to use it against Sir Lancelot and the Smurfs, blasting everything in her way in her attempt to destroy them. But then the Dark Knight appears, still attached to the magnet rock but still trying to fulfill his mistress' orders as he approaches. Excalibur is wrenched away from Morgan's hands as it is now pulled to the magnet rock, and Papa Smurf, seeing that Morgan no longer has the magic sword at her disposal, uses Sir Will to turn her into a harmless mouse who is now chased after by the three-headed hellcat.

The Smurfs cheer, and Smurfette now finds herself attracted to Hefty over his bravery in rescuing Sir Lancelot from the evil witch, and even Lancelot displays his gratitude. But then they hear Merlin's voice from deep within the waters, and so Papa Smurf uses Sir Will as a fishing reel to pull up Merlin. The wizard tells Papa Smurf not to worry about him, but about Excalibur, and so Papa Smurf uses Sir Will to remove the spell of magnetism from the giant rock so that they could use Excalibur to undo everything that Morgan has done. Soon Merlin is back to his human form again, and with Excalibur in hand, he teleports himself and the Smurfs back to Camelot, where he uses the sword to restore everything in it. Smurfette is glad to see that Lancelot is back to being his normal size again, but Lancelot says that he will never forget her. King Arthur is so grateful for Merlin coming to the rescue he wonders how he will ever repay the magician, but Merlin tells him that the true wizard who saved Camelot this time was Papa Smurf, who then says that he couldn't have done it without Sir Will.

As the Smurfs sit down to enjoy a meal with King Arthur and his knights, King Arthur now dubs the Smurfs "Smurfs of the Round Table", his men honoring their guests with cheers. Papa Smurf says that this is one day he'll never forget, and as Smurfette sees Sir Lancelot with a fair maiden, she says that this is "one knight" she'll never forget.
