"The Smurfiest Of Friends" is a Season 4 episode from the Smurfs cartoon show.

Characters[]

Synopsis[]

When Brainy and Clumsy's friendship dissolves, Brainy runs away and tries to befriend an imp that looks more perfect than it really is.

Plot Summary[]

Brainy steps out the door of his house one fine morning and decides that he should go get some intellectual stimulation from Papa Smurf, who at this moment is busy entertaining Baby Smurf with some silliness. He asks the village leader if he has any intellectually stimulating tasks for Brainy to undertake, "something that has sweeping effects on the course of Smurf history", and Papa Smurf tells Brainy that he can sweep up the laboratory. Brainy reluctantly complies and is busy doing the sweeping when Clumsy shows up, bouncing a ball on his head. He is so proud to show Brainy what he is able to do until he loses control of the ball, and it starts bouncing around the laboratory, knocking over a table and then hitting Brainy in the nose, causing him to knock down a bookshelf. Clumsy apologizes and offers to help pick up, but Brainy is so exasperated with Clumsy that he tells his fellow Smurf in no uncertain terms to leave him alone.

Clumsy realizes from this that his friendship with Brainy is over and so goes off walking alone with the ball bouncing on his head. He passes by Smurfette, Greedy, Jokey, and Vanity who are busy playing smurfball together, who then notice Clumsy sounding very sad talking to himself. After finding out from Clumsy that Brainy has broken up their friendship together, Smurfette tells her fellow Smurf that he still has plenty of friends and invites Clumsy to join the others in playing smurfball, which he gladly accepts.

After his chores, Brainy goes into his house, feeling so glad that Clumsy is out of his hair (so to speak) that he decides to spend some time reading Quotations From Brainy Smurf. During his reading Brainy finds something in the book that makes him giggle and feels that he should share it with Clumsy... until he realizes that he had broken their friendship, so he decides to try finding someone else to share the book with. His attempts to do so with Harmony, Greedy, and Farmer, have been such failures, as they instantly toss him away with his book (or sometimes with a pie or a gourd), that Brainy thinks maybe he's better off with Clumsy.

After looking at a picture with himself and Clumsy doing something together and wanting to be back together with him, Brainy decides that he should go talk to Clumsy and get him to admit that he was wrong. However, later on at a party that the other Smurfs throw for Clumsy, Brainy overhears them laughing at a joke Clumsy told that he got from Brainy, and Vanity saying that there's nothing better than a good Brainy joke. The village intellectual assumes that his former friend is now making fun of him in front of the other Smurfs and so decides in his wisdom that the only mature thing left for him to do is to run away.

Meanwhile, Clumsy is beginning to wonder why Brainy isn't showing up at the party, and the other Smurfs are pointing at each other, saying that that Smurf was supposed to invite him. Clumsy decides to step out and visit Brainy when he sees a note attached to the door of his house, saying that he's leaving the village forever and he doesn't want anybody to find him, especially near the Great Oak. Clumsy sees that Brainy needs his help and so goes out into the forest to look for him.

At that moment, Brainy leaves behind a trail of his books as he now finds himself lonely out in the forest with nobody to talk to but himself, though he tries to reconcile it with the belief that at least he will have the most intelligent conversation he ever had. Then another person shows up, introducing himself as Buddy and offering to be Brainy's new best friend. He invites Brainy to come over to his house, which makes Brainy wonder why Buddy should be his new best friend. Buddy offers Brainy three "good reasons":

  1. He likes the color blue.
  2. He thinks glasses make Brainy look distinguished.
  3. He's a good listener.

While Brainy is busy deciding that he should go accept Buddy's offer of friendship, Clumsy is busy looking for his friend, which he does by looking under every rock until he comes across a rather big rock, and behind it the cat Azrael was waiting for him. Clumsy makes a run for it, but only manages to escape Azrael by stumbling down an incline. Then Clumsy sees the trail of books left behind that lead to the Great Oak. Seeing that Brainy must have been "smurfnapped", Clumsy goes to find where Brainy has gone off to.

At Buddy's house, Brainy tries to entertain his new best friend, only to find out that Buddy only lured him to his house for other plans as Buddy unmasks himself, revealing his true face and telling Brainy that he will now spend the rest of his life running on the treadmill in order to operate all of his conveniences. Brainy was so appalled by the deception that he told Buddy he thought that he wanted to be Brainy's best friend. Buddy laughs, saying that only an idiot would want to be Brainy's best friend... a comment that Clumsy overhears as he reaches the house to see his best friend be put to work.

As Azrael picks up the scent of Smurfs from the trail of books left behind and follows it, Clumsy watches as Buddy thanks Brainy for powering up his household machines. Brainy asks if he could have a rest, and Buddy says he will give him a few seconds to do so after his massage, and as he goes to prepare himself for the massage, he tells Brainy not to stop running because he will know if he does. Then after Brainy is left alone to lament the loss of his friendship to Clumsy, his former friend shows up on the treadmill beside him, telling Brainy that he came to rescue him, and that with himself taking Brainy's place on the treadmill, he could make a run for it. But Brainy refuses to leave if Clumsy isn't going to come with him.

However, neither Brainy nor Clumsy notice that Azrael has sneaked his way into the house until Brainy sees the cat on the treadmill chasing his friend, which makes Clumsy run faster, causing the massaging arms to go faster, hurting Buddy's back. Brainy pulls Clumsy off the treadmill and they both escape, leaving Buddy to deal with Azrael who now chases after him on the treadmill.

Someone To Lean On

Sometimes you don't appreciate your friends until you find yourself in need of one.

As they both head back to the village, Brainy tells Clumsy to go on ahead, that he doesn't want to keep him from his friends. Clumsy tells Brainy that he would rather be with Brainy, saying that he loves him. This makes Brainy so surprised that the least he can say to that is "I know just how you feel".

Trivia[]

  • This is one of the few times Azrael appears without Gargamel.
  • Brainy approaches Harmony saying "Harmony Smurf! Let me entertain you." before being booted. "Let Me Entertain You" is a title of a song by British band Queen as well as from Gypsy: A Musical Fable.
  • Despite having aired during Season 4, the Tubi release of this episode uses the Season 6 intro sequence and credits.
