Hugo, the eldest son of Baron Red Steyn comes after three years of traveling back in his country. In a tavern he learns that his father has disappeared and that the area has since ruled by Hugo's younger brother, Bertram. Bertram, however, is greedy so the population lives in poverty. Hugo concludes his job as acting ruler to record, but first goes to sleep. However, he is awakened by some masked bandits who want to murder him. With the help of Johan, who also just arriving at the inn, Hugo chasing the attackers fled.
Johan and Hugo go later at the end of Red Steyn. Bertram, uncle and cousin Adelbert Diederik will welcome Hugo. However, in dinner time, Hugo was poisoned by someone while eating. Johan is informed and caught a person called Otto, who tries to poison Hugo again. He escapes and sends the whole lock behind Johan on. Who takes sick Hugo on the shoulders and flight. He enlists the help of Tanneke, a witch who heals Hugo from being poisoned.
