"The Golden Smurf Award" is a Season 3 episode from the 1980s Smurfs cartoon show.

Characters[]

Synopsis[]

Brainy makes a contest, the "Golden Smurf Award", of which the trophy is actually a disguised Hogatha!

Plot Summary[]

Hogatha receives a letter, which she reads after turning the mailman into a frog for asking her to pay the delivery charge. The letter turns out to be an invitation to participate in the witches' Miss Dark Ages Beauty Show event. She looks at herself in the mirror and says that the other hags don't stand a chance, but as the mirror cracks, she realizes that her skin is so dry, even having steam blown in her face from her pet dragon Louise doesn't help. She goes to look up her great-grandmother Dogatha's book on beauty for a solution and discovers something called "oil of Smurf skin softener", where one must rub a Smurf upon their face every day until the blue wears off. She decides it's time to pay a visit to the Smurfs where she knows there's a lot of them just dying to get under her skin, or so she believes as she takes off on her pet vulture.

Meanwhile, in the Smurf Village, everybody is enjoying a beautiful spring morning, with Handy picking smurfberries with his machine, Smurfette giving her flowers (and Lazy) a spring shower, and Grouchy sneaking a moment to let go of his grouchiness and partake in a healthy skip while singing the Smurf song. As Papa Smurf and Brainy go off into the forest to observe the wonders of spring, Brainy casually says that Mother Nature deserves an award for all the beauty they see before them. Papa Smurf thinks it's an excellent idea and then goes forth to collect a bouquet of a hundred flowers that he would personally deliver to Mother Nature as a token of the Smurfs' appreciation.

After the Smurfs watch Papa Smurf fly off on Feathers to deliver the bouquet, Brainy goes to tell the others that he thinks that somebody among themselves (like himself) should get an award for doing something outstanding. Jokey obliges by giving Brainy his kind of "award"... one of his usual "surprises", which makes the others laugh as Brainy falls for it. Later on, Brainy talks with Clumsy about his idea that Papa Smurf should give an award to the Smurf with "the smurfiest contribution to the world of Smurf". When Clumsy says that Papa Smurf isn't here to give the award, Brainy decides that he should be the one who give it, and that he shall call it the Golden Smurf Award.

Brainy finds it

Brainy finds the "golden smurf award".

With Harmony summoning the Smurfs together, Brainy speaks to them from the speaking mushroom about the Golden Smurf Award, which makes them wonder what it is and what they would need to do to earn it. Brainy explains that the award will go to the Smurf with this year's "smurfiest contribution to the world of Smurf" and that they will vote the following night to determine who should get it. This makes the Smurfs so excited that they go off to get started on their "smurfiest contribution" to make sure it is ready. Brainy watches, laughing as he says that none of them can top his own contribution, which is the latest copy of Quotations Of Brainy Smurf. As Brainy then goes off into the forest to practice his acceptance speech, Hogatha tells her vulture to fly faster, or her skin will turn to sandpaper.

A little later, Brainy shows up in the village to talk to Handy, who thinks that his smurfberry picking machine will be a shoo-in for the Golden Smurf Award. Brainy comments that Handy's machine is not likely to win because it's just too ordinary, and suggests that if Handy wants to win, he should have a gimmick. Handy has no idea what a gimmick is, so Brainy tells him it's that little something extra that would make his invention stand out from all the other contributions. Brainy then leaves Handy to his wondering while he goes off to continue practicing his speech.

Brainy later appears onto Smurfette, who is busy picking flowers that she thinks is sure to win the award, and tells her that they are so ordinary, convincing her that she would need to get bigger flowers or paint them a different color in order to win. Soon, Smurfette, Handy, Vanity, and Painter are busy putting gimmicks on their contributions, convinced by Brainy's reasoning that that's what they need. However, Painter, Vanity, and Smurfette soon see that their gimmicks will never do, which leaves Smurfette in tears because she wants to win the Golden Smurf Award so badly. Brainy tries to "console" his fellow Smurfs with the "fact" that they will never win the award anyway, because he says that the only contribution likely to win is Quotations Of Brainy Smurf. Their response is to give Brainy something truly "uplifting"!

Brainy then goes off into the forest, thinking of how he's going to display the Golden Smurf Award as a monument of his brilliance, as Hogatha finds him and then sneaks up on him in order to capture them. Suddenly, Brainy realizes that he hasn't decided what the Golden Smurf Award will be and is now racking his brain trying to figure out what he could give as a suitable award. Hogatha overhears this and decides that she would help Brainy with giving the award so she could sneak into the village and capture the Smurfs. With her pet vulture perched upon her head, Hogatha uses her magic to transform herself and her vulture into a golden statuette. Brainy finds the statuette and decides that this should be the Golden Smurf Award, taking it back to the Smurf Village and hiding it underneath his bed for the night of its presentation. Hogatha is so excited in anticipation that she makes Brainy's bed jump.

The night of the Golden Smurf Award presentation comes, and the Smurfs are gathering at the Smurf Theater, excited to find out who is going to win it. Grouchy is wondering who is going to win "the unsmurfiest dress award", with Vanity being the first obvious choice. Clumsy is busy trying to get his tie on and tries to get Lazy to come with him to the presentation. The contestants show up with their contributions, which makes the gathered Smurfs laugh and the contributors rather upset that their gimmicks have ruined their contributions, yet they console themselves with the fact that it will be all worth winning the award to have the gimmicks. Finally, after Harmony gets the Smurf's attention with his multiple instruments, Brainy invites the audience to take a look at the contestants, and to cast a vote for the "smurfiest contribution". He tells them, "May the best smurf win...", which is followed by "...and may that Smurf be me.".

Golden Smurf Award Contestants

All the known entries for the Golden Smurf Award.

Soon, all the votes are cast. Brainy takes the voting box toward his house, hoping to count the votes in private... before his fellow Smurfs make him realize how "less painful" it would be to tally the votes before all involved. As fate would have it, the first vote Brainy counts is for himself... which, according to him, makes it "Obvious that I'm the unanimous choice.". Brainy just has time to whip out his acceptance speech before the others demand that he finish the tally.

Meanwhile, the Miss Dark Ages beauty contest is taking place. The witches taking part in it (including one of the Great Swamp witches) gossip about Hogatha's non-appearance, laughing as none of them actually miss her presence.

Back in the Smurf Village, Brainy announces the troubling situation of a 98-way tie... because every Smurf ended up voting for himself (even though there were only 10 actual entrants). The Smurfs wonder who among them didn't cast a vote. Clumsy admits to being that Smurf, because he couldn't decide who to vote on; this makes every Smurf with an actual contribution pester Clumsy, hoping he'll vote for them. Clumsy becomes the hapless victim of a food fight, when Jokey's big surprise goes off--knocking down Greedy's Gargamel cake, Clumsy simply can't bring himself to choose a favorite among his friends. Brainy decides, as the Master of Ceremonies, to break the tie... by nominating himself as the winner. The other Smurfs, having gone through all that trouble for nothing, groan at this blatant rigging of the contest. Brainy opens the box and is about to present himself with the Golden Smurf Award... when Hogatha reverts back to her original form. She proceeds to capture enough Smurfs for her beauty regimen.

Papa Smurf is on his way home to the Smurf Village when he hears that there is danger and then sees Hogatha fly off on her vulture with a sack of captured Smurfs. He has Feathers turn and follow the witch as she returns to her castle to begin using Smurfs to make her skin softer. Her first victim, Vanity, tells Hogatha that "oil of Smurf" would never work on her and suggests a different form of regimen like a mud bath. While Hogatha considers Vanity's suggestion, Papa Smurf has sneaked his way into the castle, signaling to his little Smurfs that he is here to help. Soon, the witch has mud packed on her by the Smurfs until she is completely covered, and then her dragon bakes the mud until it hardens, making the Smurfs cheer. All Hogatha could say is that it better be worth it, and Painter assures her that when they're done with her, she won't be another pretty face in the crowd.

The Smurfs now cart the immobilized Hogatha up to the top of a mountain, where they leave her in the hopes that she will never bother their village again. Meanwhile, Gargamel is busy in his lair working on something he has now perfected, called Instant Misery Muck, and he is so happy that he's crying tears, telling Azrael nothing can ruin this moment now. However, the cart containing the immobilized Hogatha now goes down the incline, passing through a patch of flowers, and continuing to roll until it crashes straight into Gargamel's castle, causing an explosion, and (we must assume) ruining his experiment.

Back in the village, the Smurfs explain to Papa Smurf that they were all competing for the Golden Smurf Award by presenting the "smurfiest contribution". Papa Smurf thinks the whole thing is unsmurfy because all his little Smurfs' contributions are of equal importance. He begins to wonder who thought of this idea in the first place until the other Smurfs point out that it was Brainy. He sheepishly explains that he thought it was the best way for his fellow Smurfs to honor him, and adds to that, "Like I always say, you've got to have a gimmick.", before he gets booted out of the village as usual.
