Plot Summary[]

Black White And Blue

Things look really blue for the Smurfs when most of their world is in black and white.

Painter is up and about early in the morning in the Smurf Forest, climbing to the highest point to see Spectra, the color sprite, busy at work filling the world with color from her magic palette. He watches as the drab darkness of the forest is changed to vibrant brilliance, and as Spectra stops by Painter to ask what color he intends to do his paintings in, all his natural colors also come into view with the help of her magic brush.

Soon, Painter is busy at work on his latest masteurpiesa, painting a nearby pond and seeing that a color is missing from his work. He sees the Smurflings running out into the forest to chase a butterfly and has them stand by a rock so that he could paint "smurfy blue". However, the Smurflings get bored from just standing around and tell Painter to hurry it up. Painter tells them that mixing up "smurfy blue" can never be rushed. The Smurflings don't see what the right kind of blue matters for a painting, even as Painter shows them that there are different shades of blue that exist, so the village artist decides to take them to see Spectra in her tower.

They see that she isn't home, but the Smurflings take notice of a machine inside her tower that produces all sorts of colors. Painter says that it's a color wheel for producing colors in all its unique shades, but the Smurflings still don't see what's so important about colors having shades. Painter just simply says he gives up and walks out of the tower, which makes the Smurflings wonder why he's so upset. Snappy thinks of borrowing a bit of "smurfy blue" from the color wheel so that Painter won't have to mix it himself, which Sassette agrees to. Snappy tries to pull the bottle of "smurfy blue" from the color wheel but is unable to until Sassette helps him. Nat warns the two to be careful, but then as they succeed in getting the bottle, the color wheel starts spinning out of control until it rolls off the machine and crashes into a tree outside the tower. Painter and the Smurflings watch in horror as all the colors from the color wheel spill and mix together to form a dark gray.

Soon, the entire world is filled with a black-and-white monochrome, with the only visible color being "smurfy blue". Painter wonders why he and the Smurflings are still "smurfy blue", and Snappy reveals that he has taken the bottle of "smurfy blue", meaning it's the only color that exists in the world. Meanwhile, Spectra sees that all the colors in the world have changed to monochrome, and soon she feels so tired that she drops down to the ground and rests near a tree. Upon their return to the Smurf Village, Painter and the Smurflings explain the current situation to Papa Smurf, who then says that they must find Spectra at once so they can discover how to restore color into the world.

At that moment, Gargamel takes a look at the world in and outside his castle and sees that everything in it is monochrome, including himself and Azrael. However, he isn't going to let a black-and-white world stop him from catching Smurfs, as he takes his Smurf-catching gear with him out into the forest to find Smurfs. He is surprised to find that the Smurfs are still "smurfy blue", which means that catching them in a world without color has just become easier as he catches both Vanity and Smurfette with his fishing line from behind a bush.

Elsewhere in the forest, Papa Smurf, Grandpa Smurf, Painter, the Smurflings, and Puppy go out in search of Spectra, noticing the full effect of the absence of all other colors in the world, until they see Spectra resting near a tree. They see that the color sprite doesn't look very well, and she tells them that she cannot live in a world without color. Papa Smurf tells her that the color wheel has been damaged and asks if there is a way to fix it. Spectra says that they must bring her liquid light from the Rainbow Pool, but as she warns them to "beware of the Roc", she collapses into a faint. Seeing that her condition is very serious, Papa Smurf tells the others to go to the Rainbow Pool at once while he stays to take care of Spectra.

Roc

Beware of the Roc!

While Grandpa Smurf takes Painter, Puppy, and the Smurflings up the mountain path to the Rainbow Pool, Gargamel spots them with his binoculars and goes after them. After a seemingly grueling hike up the mountain, the Smurfs see a pool that is so full of various shades of colors, all being fed by a waterfall full of liquid made of the same colors. Grandpa Smurf sees that this must be the Rainbow Pool, a sight which amazes both Painter and the Smurflings with its brilliance. Slouchy, however, wonders about "the rock" they're supposed to look for as Grandpa Smurf dips an empty bottle into the water, but just as he does, a variegated fearsome creature with wings arises from the center of the pool. Grandpa Smurf says that this must be the Roc, a creature from the ancient past, which makes him and the younger Smurfs run for their lives.

Unfortunately, just as the Smurfs think they are safe from the Roc as it dives back into the pool, they see Gargamel appear on the same path they came from, ready to capture them with his fishing line. Quickly, Grandpa Smurf and the Smurflings become easy catches, but Painter manages to elude capture by hiding behind a rock, wondering how he's going to fool Gargamel and rescue the other Smurfs. He sees the bottle of "smurfy blue" he has in his hand and uses it to paint a picture of himself upon a small rock. Soon, Gargamel falls for the bait and gets his fishing line stuck on the rock while Painter loses the other Smurfs from Gargamel's basket. But Gargamel sees that the Smurfs have escaped and chases after them. He casts his line towards them, and the Smurfs all duck as the line reaches out over the pool and latches onto the Roc, who arises from the pool to chase after the evil wizard. The distraction allows Grandpa Smurf to dip the empty bottle into the Rainbow Pool and collect the liquid light that they need to restore Spectra.

Back at the tree, Papa Smurf feels Spectra's pulse getting weak when the other Smurfs return with the liquid light. The village leader pours some onto the color sprite, and suddenly she regains color and life. She goes inside her tower to fix her wheel and to bring back all the colors in the world, and as she flies off with her magic palette and paintbrush, the Smurfs watch the monochrome world be saturated with color once again. The Smurflings finally take notice of the various shades of color that exist in the world, which makes them appreciate the kind of world they live in with so many colors to look at, even the dull gray of the rock that Clumsy drops on Grandpa Smurf's foot.
