An intro sequence is the part of a TV show that introduces what the program is about to the viewers, showing characters and either sample scenes from the episodes or scenes made specifically for the intro. The Smurfs cartoon show uses nine distinct intro sequences, one for each season, which were shown during its original Saturday morning broadcast on NBC. In its current form as Smurfs Adventures (as well as international distributions outside of the USA), the cartoon show mostly uses one single intro sequence, although some others have been used. In DVD releases, one specific intro sequence may be used for all the episodes on the disc or in the disc set. With downloaded or streamed episodes, the intro sequence that is used may vary.

Season 1

"Long, long ago, deep in a forest, there was a hidden village where tiny creatures lived. They called themselves Smurfs. They were good. Then there was Gargamel, the evil wizard. He was bad....Well, the forest is still there. And if you listen, you may hear Gargamel's rage. And if you are good, you may just catch a glimpse of the Smurfs."

The intro narration takes place during a panning of the Smurf forest, which leads to the appearance of the Smurfs and a montage of shots featuring Smurfs doing their daily activities. Then comes a shot of Gargamel's castle, with Gargamel appearing in the window, saying, "Oooh, I hate the Smurfs!" This is followed by Gargamel briefly chasing after a Smurf until he ends up trapped inside a log, with the Smurf watching as he rants and raves, bumping into the trees. The Smurf then runs through the forest and dives through a hollowed-out log before proceeding to go behind the SMURFS title logo and then appear sitting on top of a mushroom.

The Season 2 intro sequence is noted for featuring the lyrics to the Smurf song, which were later used in both the 2011 Smurfs movie and in a dance version in one of the songs in the playlist of The Smurfs Dance Party.

The intro starts with Johan and Peewit riding their horses through the Smurf forest. They pass by a Smurf watching from a branch, who then hops off, and then dives through the hollowed-out log and towards the village, as the Smurf song begins. We then see a group of Smurfs (including Painter) painting a Smurf house, followed by a shot of two Smurfs on a sea-saw, taking turns to paint two different mushroom houses. At the village dam, Papa Smurf sings a verse, while back at the village, Greedy prepares a cake and Brainy opens one of Jokey's surprise gifts. The gift explodes and many Smurfs are laughing at this, but Grouchy Smurf says that he hate smiles. Next, we see Smurfette dancing (with animation re-used from "Smurfette's Dancing Shoes") and singing a verse. She jumps and lands in Hefty Smurf's arms, then gives him a kiss. A large shadow appears, followed by a big green dragon that breathes fire toward Johan and Peewit. Peewit hides behind Johan while his friend uses his shield to block the flames. The scene now turns to a bridge with Johan and Peewit who are being chased by a group of soldiers. Then it turns to Gargamel facing some Smurfs and yelling "I hate Smurfs!", with Azrael running straight towards the screen. The Smurfs pull a rope and Gargamel trips over it and falls. He lands on top of Azrael and scares up a lot of dust. After the dust disappears, the Smurfs are dancing around Gargamel who is tied down with rope and brought back to Smurf Village by the Smurfs. Harmony plays some bad music with his trumpet and a Smurf covers the trumpet's hole. Then a group of Smurfs which is playing in a orchestra appeared as Papa Smurf is the conductor.

Finally, as in the first season, the Smurf runs to get behind the SMURFS title logo and then appears on the mushroom.

Season 3

Smurfs Season 3

As the intro begins, a Smurf walks across a branch behind a knight standing guard on a hill overlooking a castle against the night sky, being very cautious in his walk so that nobody detects him, and then heads off the right side of the screen as a bunny turns to look. We then see Lazy sleeping on a branch next to an owl as the camera pans to show the outside of the Smurf Village, then we see Smurfs doing a circle dance around a fire during a party, then some Smurfs rushing into a windmill carrying mushroom umbrellas during a rainstorm. Then it cuts to the outside of Gargamel's castle, and inside Gargamel and Papa Smurf encounter each other, saying each other's names, before it cuts to Gargamel appearing at the door of Lord Balthazar's castle and a brief scene of Sir Johan and Peewit riding across a bridge while fleeing pursuers. Then there is a snowstorm over the village where it is blanketed with snow, then a shot of Mother Nature's house from the outside, then a scene of Smurfs digging out snow while a bunny watches, then Smurfette and a Smurf watching the sun rise over the village from a tree branch. As the Smurf song is being sung, a Smurf is seen pulling a cart of fruit while whistling, and then a group of Smurfs are working at the village dam. A stork circles over the village as it lands and delivers Baby Smurf, which Papa Smurf is seen holding in his arms. A Smurf rides down the rough waters on a crude sailboat before a wave overtakes him. Then in quick succession, a Smurf gets spooked by a fierce animal charging, a startled horse, and a dragon that breathes out fire that he escapes by jumping down into a hollowed log. Then he turns toward the SMURFS title logo and disappears behind it before reappearing on top of a mushroom as the intro ends.

The closing theme for this intro plays during the menus of the DVD release of "The Smurfs: A Magical Smurf Adventure" although the DVD features episodes from season 2. A remixed portion of the theme was also used for the Boomerang Smurfs bumpers.

Season 4

SmurfsSeason4Title

The Smurfs cartoon show title for Season 4

The Season 4 intro sequence uses scenes from "The Smurfic Games" cartoon special in the first part, most notably the part where Gargamel recites the incantation to activate the power of the Medallion Of Poseidon: "Ravage the land as never before, total destruction from mountain to shore".

The intro starts with Papa Smurf, Smurfette, and an unnamed Smurf flying on Feathers across the kingdom. They fly by Lazy, who waves back to them while resting on a flower. Next, Clumsy is shown trying to skate, but instead becomes a rolling ball on snow, landing right on top of Brainy. This is followed by a shot of Smurfette skating (which was not seen in "The Smurfic Games" special). Gargamel then recites the incantation above on a mountain, causing an earthquake to strike. (In this version of the scene, more panicking Smurfs are added.) The scene then shifts to Gargamel and Azrael stuck with a swamp monster, the Wartmongers watching Lilac, Papa Smurf, Brainy, Clumsy, and Handy run off, Smurfette and another Smurf watching the sunrise on a tree (reused from Season 3), and the Village Smurphony Orchestra. We then cut to several panicking Smurfs running around as Azrael chases Papa Smurf holding Baby, Smurfette, an unnamed Smurf, Greedy, and Clumsy through the forest. At the end of the intro, the Smurfs rush down the log, and as Azrael gets stuck, they quickly jump behind the SMURFS logo, with Clumsy appearing on the mushroom.

Smurfs Adventures

Smurfs Adventures

The syndicated version of the Smurfs cartoon show

Smurfs Adventures uses a shortened version of the original show's Season 4 intro sequence, though with no Smurf hopping onto a mushroom at the end when the show's title (modified to read SMURFS ADVENTURES with the "created by Peyo" byline added) is displayed. The following scenes from the original Season 4 intro sequence are cut:

  • The snow scene with Clumsy falling and Smurfette skating
  • The scene after the earthquake and before Azrael chases the Smurfs.

Surprisngly, the only episodes on Boomerang that don't use this intro are "The Village Vandal" with "Snappy's Way", and "Don Smurfo" with "Gargamel's Dummy", which use the original Season 6 intro.

At the beginning of the opening, we see the Smurflings riding Puppy and a horse passes them. We then see Smurfette and Sassette being chased by Azrael, who is then chased by Puppy. Next, Papa Smurf and some other Smurfs ride on Feathers and save Brainy, Clumsy, and Vanity from a hungry dragon. We then see a bunch of Smurfs rushing out of the castle of Gargamel, who walks out and opens one of Jokey's explosive giftboxes. We then see Dreamy sailing his boat through an extreme storm and a bunch of his friends are about to be eaten by a shark. It turns out to be a book cover that Papa is reading to Baby Smurf, who gurgles something in his ear. Next, the Wartmongers chase Papa Smurf and the Smurflings through the forest. At the end of the intro, Slouchy slides down the log and rushes to keep up with the others who get behind the SMURFS logo and then Puppy with Baby Smurf appears over the mushroom.

Season 6

As the intro begins, Baby Smurf opens Puppy's locket, and from inside the locket we see Smurfs in the village going about their daily business and Grandpa Smurf going to fly a kite when Gargamel, Azrael, and Scruple make their appearance. Papa Smurf has Handy activate a catapult that launches a formula that turns the three menaces into frogs. The scene suddenly shifts to Smurfette flying on Feathers, Smurfs relaxing at the beach, the Smurflings at their playhouse playing together with a swing, Nat Smurfling going fishing and catching a Smurf wearing swim goggles. Then as the sky turns rainy, we see the S.S. Smurf II sailing through a stormy sea, a group of Smurfs hopping across a group of crocodiles, and three Smurfs descending down a steep rock wall with a crystal with the Sea Witch on the balcony stretching out her arms before the locket closes. Then a Smurf runs through the forest, slides down through a hollowed log, and runs behind the SMURFS title logo before appearing on top of a mushroom with a few other Smurfs appearing at the end of the intro.

This is the first opening to not feature any spoken dialouge.

Season 7

Season 7

The Smurfs cartoon show title for Season 7

This opening re-uses several scenes from the Season 6 intro sequence.

The intro begins with a zoom-in through the Smurf Forest into the Smurf Village, where we see Smurfs doing their everyday things just as in the Season 6 intro until Gargamel, Azrael, and Scruple appear to cause the Smurfs to scatter. Then Wild Smurf comes swinging on a vine to grab a potion from Papa Smurf's hands and dumps it on Gargamel and Scruple as they run through the forest, causing them to shrink and separate from each other. Grandpa Smurf then pulls out his magic traveling hot-air balloon and he, Snappy, and Slouchy jump into it and begin to sail off when a storm cloud appears over them. Nat then feels raindrops as he is fishing, and a gust of wind blows the hot-air balloon until it sails through a narrow ravine and then through a colony of bees. A Smurf is seen bravely riding down a rough river on a log, and Papa Smurf leads a parade of Smurfs out into the forest, and a few Smurfs jump down through a hollowed log until a single Smurf is then seen heading for the SMURFS title log which materializes when he jumps on top of the mushroom.

Season 8

SmurfsSeason8

The intro begins with Hefty and Sassette flying through an orange sky on Feathers, and as they fly over the forest, Gargamel is ready to launch himself in a rocket to capture the two Smurfs. Scruple pulls the lever which launches the rocket, and Gargamel tries to scoop the two Smurfs up in his net but misses, and his rocket malfunctions, causing him to plummet out of the sky. The two Smurfs on Feathers now circle around Grandpa Smurf, Nanny, and Smoogle, who are sailing together on Grandpa's magic hot-air balloon. Down below in the village, some Smurfs are taking turns looking up in the sky using a telescope, and we see from behind Hefty and Sassette zooming through the Smurf Forest as they come in for a landing. The two elderly Smurfs join them at the same time, and Sassette hands Hefty a book which Wild swings down on a vine to grab and does a somersault in the air before landing and handing the book to Clumsy, who takes it while Wild scratches himself with his leg. Clumsy enters a house, leaps over Brainy, and lands into Smurfette's arms, who carries him over to a rocking chair that Papa Smurf is sitting in, and as the Smurfs gather around, Papa Smurf opens the book and turns to a page where we see a group of Smurfs rushing toward the SMURFS title logo and disappear behind it, with Clumsy appearing on top of a mushroom as the intro ends.

This is the first intro to be used without any vocal effects (although some were added for the Czech Republic).

  • Although Peewit is one of the heads in the book Papa Smurf opens, he doesn't appear in any of the episodes although Balthazar, Gargamel, Scruple, Homnibus, and Mother Nature do, since they were the other characters in the book.

Papa Smurf and some other Smurfs enter the chamber with the Time Scrolls, where Grandpa Smurf arranges them with the ruby key, and soon they get transported to the ancient Middle East, where they find themselves chased by a genie. They escape on a magic carpet, and then they get transported to the prehistoric past where they outrun a giant dinosaur and go into hiding just before his tail crashes down. After the tail goes away, the SMURFS title logo carved in stone appears at the intro's end.

International versions

Season 1

The_Smurfs_-_Opening_Credits

The Smurfs - Opening Credits

The international Season 1 intro for the Smurfs cartoon show with the "Smurfy Way" European theme song

The Season 1 intro sequence is one of the most common of the nine season intro sequences due to its use in international versions of The Smurfs cartoon TV series. However, the international versions of this intro also uses two different theme songs; each of them would either be instrumental, sung, or have a spoken narration like the original US version. (For more infomation on one of the theme songs, see "The Smurfy Way".) On the other hand, the original US Smurf song from season 2 was paried with the Season 1 intro for France, Italy, and Japan (which also used clips from various episodes).

Usually the international versions of the Season 1 intro would replace the original intros for seasons 2-8, while some countries retain the Season 7 and/or Season 8 intro. (In Germany, the Season 7 intro was used for both seasons 7 and 8.) Aside from this, none of the other intros, except for Season 2 (see below), were used for any of the foreign markets, although seasons 4-7 in France used portions of the openings for seasons 4 and 5, accompanied by the "Smurfy Way" theme song.

In a few markets, like Germany, the Season 1 intro sometimes either replaces the original openings for the TV show's specials, like "The Smurfic Games", or is shown before the special's opening credits are shown.

Title cards

SmurfsNewLogo

The modern title of the Smurfs cartoon show used for foreign markets

In most countries, the Season 1 intro was originally shown with the capitalized SMURFS title logo. However, France, Germany, and the original Czech Republic airings of the TV show translated the title card into their own language.

In France, from seasons 1 to 3, and in Germany, from seasons 1 and 2 (original airings only), after the Smurf dives out of the log, we cut to the translated title logo, showing only the Smurf jumping on the mushroom.

For the Czech Republic and seasons 1-8 in Germany, the shot is already zoomed in on the translated title logo, as the Smurf walks towards and gets behind it.

For seasons 4-7 in France, a bush is added behind the LES SCHTROUMPFS title logo, which fades in after all of the Smurfs, running from Azrael, jump behind the bush.

When the opening was restored for different countries outside of the USA, the original title card at the end of the opening was changed with the more modern version of THE SMURFS logo. There were even three variations of the opening with the title translated in French, Spanish, Dutch, and German.

Adventures of Johan and Peewit

JohanPeewitInternationalTitle

The international English title of Adventures of Johan and Peewit

The original Season 2 intro was used for the "Johan and Peewit" episodes (also having its own theme song), which aired seperately from the Smurfs cartoon show in foreign markets. The shots of Greedy and the first half of Smurfette dancing are replaced with the same shot at the beginning of the intro with Johan and Peewit riding through the forest.

In the Netherlands, the final shot with the title logo, only shows the Smurf jumping onto the mushroom, although the zoom-in effect towards the mushroom remains intact.

In Italy, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia, the Season 1 intro was paired up with the Johan & Peewit theme song.

Season 8

In some markets, the Season 8 intro has a special "newer" variation, in which the end of the Season 1 intro with the modern title is shown after Papa Smurf flips the page.

In France, before Papa Smurf flips the page, it cuts to the end of the Season 7 intro, with the LES SCHTROUMPFS title card fading in, and the single Smurf hopping on the mushroom.

There are also three different Czech versions of this intro. Two versions use more vocal effects from Gargamel, although one version uses the audio from the Season 7 intro. Also, the third version uses the spoken narration and dialogue from Gargamel from the Season 1 intro, along with more vocal effects from the Smurfs.

"Smurfingland" theme song

Smurfs Opening Netherlands - Since the 90s

On newer international releases, a new reharmonized version of the US Smurf song known as "Smurfingland" was released in the mid-1990s and is often used frequently for foreign markets like France, Korea, the Czech Republic, and the Netherlands. The French, Spanish, German, Czech, and Korean versions of the theme song was paired with the Season 1 intro, while the English and Dutch versions were paired with the Season 8 intro; both intros use the modified title card at the end.
