"Smurfiplcation" is a Season 4 episode from the 1980s Smurfs cartoon show.

Characters[]

Synopsis[]

Gargamel duplicates Brainy, so the Smurfs now have to deal with six nerds instead of one.

Plot Summary[]

In Gargamel's castle, the evil wizard is now ready to test out his latest invention: a duplicating machine. For the test run, he runs a mouse on a treadmill to add the drops of each formula upon it in order: first the violet, then the green, and then the blue. Soon the mouse is duplicated into six mice, which all run as Azrael pounces upon them. Gargamel sees that his duplicating machine is a success, and soon with it, he can complete his gold-making formula just by capturing one single Smurf and running him through the machine to get the six Smurfs he needs for his magic formula to turn base metals into gold.

Six Brainys

Brainy by the half-dozen.

Out in the forest, the Smurfs are enjoying a riverside picnic with Papa Smurf and Baby Smurf playing pattycake together. Smurfette feels like playing a game with her fellow Smurfs, and so Brainy makes a few suggestions before she suggests hide-and-go-smurf. Hefty thinks it's a great idea and has Brainy tagged as "it", the one who will do the seeking. Brainy gets a little upset at the idea that no matter what game they play, he's always "it", but he quickly gets into the spirit of the game as he closes his eyes and count while his fellow Smurfs hide. Lazy hides himself under a leaf and hopes that Brainy won't find him until bedtime. Clumsy doesn't know where to hide by the time Brainy finishes his count until Hefty pulls him inside the log he's hiding in.

Brainy goes off to look for the Smurfs who are hiding, but after a while he realizes that he's lost, only to soon be found by Gargamel who swoops him up in a net. He brings Brainy to his hovel where he runs the captive Smurf through his duplicating machine, saying that soon he'll be able to turn base metals into gold. After all three potions are applied, Brainy tells Gargamel that in order to make gold, he'll need six Smurfs. Gargamel tells Brainy that in a minute he will have six Smurfs, and while Brainy scoffs at the idea that Gargamel can make six Smurfs out of Brainy, he is soon joined by five identical copies of himself.

Back at the picnic, Papa Smurf is resting on a blanket with Baby Smurf when Smurfette, Hefty, and Handy wake him up, alerting him to the fact that they haven't seen Brainy. Papa Smurf assumes that Brainy is still looking for them, but Smurfette says he's been gone for too long and that he could have found them by now. Papa Smurf says that they'll just have to go out and look for him. In the meantime, Gargamel has to deal with six Brainys that are just as annoying as the original as they argue over how they're going to escape. But as Azrael is watching the cage to make sure the captive Smurfs don't escape while Gargamel goes to get more sea serpent slime, three of the Brainys taunt the cat, causing him to knock down the cage, which breaks apart upon landing. The six Brainys briefly argue over which direction they should go to escape when they finally decide going anywhere is better than being a sitting duck for Gargamel and Azrael.

Six Brainys On Their Heads

At least they can all be tossed out together!

Out in the forest, Papa Smurf is beginning to get worried that they will never find Brainy when Handy brings him over, saying that he has found Brainy. This makes Papa Smurf happy until Smurfette shows up with Brainy, and then four more Smurfs show up with Brainy, which now makes Papa Smurf confused. He realizes that Gargamel has found a way to duplicate Brainy and is now looking for a way to bring all six of them back together as one Brainy, so he tells the six Brainys to separate and find six different Smurfs to stay with for the time being. However, the six Smurfs in the village find out all too soon that six Brainys to offer the original's usual form of advice is six Brainys too many for the village to put up with.

Later on, Papa Smurf calls his little Smurfs together to tell them that he has gone through all his books, and he still can't solve the mystery of the six Brainys. He says that the formula must be in Gargamel's home, so he must take the six Brainys with him and go there to solve the mystery, which makes the other Smurfs cheer. While Gargamel is out at sea trying to gather more sea serpent slime for his formula, Papa Smurf and the six Brainys visit the evil wizard's hovel, with the village leader telling the Brainys to be quiet, for Azrael is still around and asleep. Papa Smurf looks through one of the open spell books and realizes that the secret to reversing the duplication of Brainy is to multiply the ingredients by six times and run the Brainys through the machine backwards.

Soon everything is all set, and Papa Smurf is ready to start up the duplication machine to reverse the duplication, but he is still too small to effectively turn the crank and get the machine running. The six Brainys offer to help Papa Smurf, but then he has an idea of his own to try. He ties one end of a rope to the machine and the other end to Azrael's collar, then he imitates the barking of a dog through a funnel used as a megaphone, waking up the cat and causing him to run. As Azrael runs, he pulls on the rope that turns the crank, and the six Brainys are doused with the three formulas, causing the multiple Brainys to vanish until there's only one left.

Six Gargamels

Wave your hands in the air for a Gargamel party!

Papa Smurf is glad to see Brainy back in one piece, but then they hear Gargamel returning to his lair singing his usual song, and they see him enter to find two Smurfs that he can multiply into twelve to have twice as much gold. Azrael comes back inside through the window and chases after the Smurfs, binding the wizard up in the rope that's still attached to the collar and causing him to drop the jar of sea serpent slime. Gargamel is dragged along the floor until he crashes into the duplication machine and is doused with the three formulas which soon duplicate the wizard as he is cursing his cat for his ineptitude. But soon the wizard sees the benefit of having six of him around so he could make capturing Smurfs easier, and then relishes in the thought of duplicating himself even more, imagining a world full of himself. However, Gargamel soon finds out that six of himself is six too many as they all add a teaspoon of dragon's breath into the mixture in the cauldron, causing an explosion that brings Gargamel back to being only one. He then woefully says that he will never dabble in duplication again, as he sees multiple Azraels through his blurry vision.

Back in the village, the Smurfs have gathered to see Brainy back to being only one of himself, and Papa Smurf tells his assistant that having six of himself must have taught him a lesson. Brainy thinks that the lesson is that having only one Brainy around is not nearly enough, but before he goes on to tell what he could do with more of himself, he gets his usual catapult out of the village. Brainy just sighs and says, "Alone again", as the story ends.
