"Smurfette's Flower" is a Season 6 episode from the Smurfs cartoon show.

Characters[]

Synopsis[]

Smurfette finds a talking flower that starts using Smurfette's kindness.

Plot Summary[]

Smurfette goes walking out into the forest with Puppy carrying boxes to put flowers that she hopes to collect into, saying that they will be perfect for decorating the Springtime Banquet. She plucks a few of the flowers and has Puppy smell their scent, but then a bee appears with the flower to bother Puppy's nose, causing him to run off with Smurfette hanging on until the dog suddenly stops at a puddle to soak his nose. Smurfette is flung off Puppy, landing safely on the ground, but not angry for what Puppy did in response to the bee that bothered him. She tells Puppy that she is all right, but another voice says that it is not. Smurfette gets up and sees that it's a talking flower that calls itself Petaluma, and the flower seems to be in a great deal of pain since Smurfette fell on it. She offers to bring Petaluma back to the village where she could take good care of it, which Petaluma accepts, but tells Smurfette to be careful of where she's digging.

Smurfette'sflower

A talking flower? Oh, smurfness gracious!

Soon, Petaluma has been transplanted into a flowerpot and placed on Smurfette's windowsill where the maiden Smurf thinks is a good spot for the flower to grow. Petaluma, however, wants to be placed in a spot with less sunlight, so Smurfette moves her to a spot away from the sun and tells Petaluma that she will give the flower whatever it wants before she walks off. The flower decides to ask Smurfette for a bit more water, and she rushes back to satisfy its desire, only to find out that it doesn't like river water, so Smurfette goes to get fresh rainwater from Greedy to water Petaluma.

Sometime later, Petaluma sees that Smurfette's house has become shady and now desires to have more sunlight. Smurfette explains that her house is always shady around that time of day, but with a bit of cajoling from Petaluma, Smurfette has Handy and Brainy come over to create a skylight in her roof so that the flower could have its sunlight. She leaves Petaluma alone for a bit so that she could run some errands, promising that she will return soon, though Petaluma doesn't like having sawdust raining on her petals.

Papa Smurf and Painter watch as Smurfette rushes through creating the flower arrangements for the banquet tables, wondering what's going on. Smurfette says that she is taking care of Petaluma and that she must hurry. Papa Smurf tries to assure her that Petaluma can take care of itself, but then she hears a cry coming from the flower, so she drops what she was doing to hear its complaints about the two Smurfs dumping sawdust on her. Handy and Brainy both feel offended, but Smurfette feels that none of the Smurfs understand the care that Petaluma needs.

During the night, as Smurfette sleeps, a rainstorm occurs, and Smurfette sees that it's coming into her house through the skylight. She reaches to close it up, but Petaluma tells her not to do it, saying that it loves the rain. Smurfette concedes to its wishes and leaves the skylight open. By morning, she sees that not only is her house all soaked, but also Petaluma has grown with her tendrils spreading out all over the house, leaving her with no room for herself. Smurfette asks Petaluma what she's going to do, and Petaluma suggests that she should move out. Realizing that she has no choice if she truly cares about the flower, Smurfette packs up her bag and moves into the Smurflings' playhouse. Papa Smurf arrives there to ask Smurfette why she isn't staying in her house, and Smurfette says Petaluma has grown so big that there's no room for her. The village leader suggests pruning her, but Smurfette says the flower wouldn't like letting her do that.

As Papa Smurf walks off, he sees that it's time to have a talk with the talking flower. However, Petaluma isn't interested in listening to reason even as he tries to make peace with it and closes the shutters on his efforts. At night in his laboratory, Papa Smurf finds in his books about flowers a section speaking of a species called Ficus Solitarius that is both very beautiful and very selfish, caring only about itself at the expense of whoever takes care of it. He is determined to not let Petaluma take control of Smurfette's life like that.

Suddenly, Smurfette is awakened to Petaluma's cry, and quickly she rushes into her house to find pruned tendril pieces lying on the floor and Petaluma wrapping Papa Smurf and Brainy in its other tendrils to keep them from pruning the rest. Papa Smurf assures Smurfette and Petaluma that he's only trying to do what's best for them both, that Smurfette needs her space to live in just as much as Petaluma needs its own, and that Petaluma is a guest in Smurfette's house. But Petaluma now wants to be brought back into the forest where Smurfette found her, and soon with tears she brings the flower out to a spot where she hopes it will be happy. Smurfette finds herself hurt by the mean things Petaluma was saying to her, and when she backs away and sees that she's sinking in quicksand, she is even more surprised by how uncaring and nonreactive it was in responding to her cries of help. Fortunately, Papa Smurf and some of the other Smurfs followed Smurfette out into the forest and pulled her to safety, having no trust in Petaluma at all. She follows her fellow Smurfs back home to the village and says goodbye to Petaluma, telling the flower she knows who her real friends were.

As winter falls upon the forest, Petaluma finds itself freezing and wishing that it could be someplace warm and safe if it had only been nicer to Smurfette. The flower cries out for its former owner, and in the village, as the Smurfs prepare for the rough winds that are blowing, Smurfette hears a faint cry and wonders if she's hearing things before she realizes that it is Petaluma and that it needs her help. The Smurflings watching from the safety of their playhouse see Smurfette go off into the forest at her own risk and decide to follow after her. Papa Smurf sees that the door to the playhouse is still open and goes in only to find that the Smurflings are gone.

Smurfette heads for where she has planted Petaluma in the forest and sees how terrible it looks when she finds it. Petaluma says it hates the place and wishes she was back home in the village with her. Smurfette tells Petaluma it has made her plant it in that spot, and Petaluma apologizes for the way it has treated her. As the Smurflings reach a spot near a tree behind where Smurfette and Petaluma are located, they see a whirlwind headed for Smurfette and call out to warn her, but the whirlwind picks up Smurfette and carries her. She cries for help, and Petaluma uses its leaves to pull its former owner out of the whirlwind and to safety where the Smurflings are. Papa Smurf soon joins them to keep Smurfette and the Smurflings from blowing away, but Smurfette sees that the whirlwind has now uprooted Petaluma and carrying it away, saying goodbye to Smurfette. She goes over to the spot where the flower was planted and weeps for the loss while Papa Smurf consoles her, saying that because of her love the flower grew to care about somebody besides itself. Smurfette thinks that she will never see Petaluma again, but Papa Smurf notices two small seeds left on the ground, suggesting that it may not be the end for the plant.

By spring, Smurfette now has two little flowers growing in her garden, Petaluma's children, and they are more appreciative of their owner's efforts in taking care of them. Papa Smurf tells Clumsy that these flowers are now growing up right, with a lot of sunshine, a lot of water, and a lot of love. The little flowers ask Smurfette what their mother was like, and Smurfette tries to tell them how beautiful it was. Brainy comes over and was about to say what Petaluma was really like (in his own estimation) when he was prompted by Smurfette and Papa Smurf saying his name, and smelling the flowers said that it smelled just like them.
