Plot Summary

Spirit Of The Scales

It's not nice to mess around with the Spirit Of The Scales!

In the Smurf Village, the Smurfs are busy making preparations for a smurfday party -- Sassette's, to be exact. Papa Smurf tells his little Smurfs that they should be careful not to let the little Smurfling about her party, and Brainy says that he has cleverly sent her out into the forest to collect firewood, so she doesn't know a thing. Meanwhile, out in the forest, Hefty and the Smurflings are busy collecting firewood when Sassette comments on how hot it is and wonders how long they have to do this job. Hefty and Nat both say that it's only until lunchtime, which is when Sassette suspects they will have a smurfday party for her. The other Smurfs are taken aback wondering how she even knows about it, and Sassette says that it's rather curious that they should be collecting firewood in the middle of summer. As Hefty tries to remind the little redhead that it's supposed to be a surprise, Sassette tells them what a great surprise it would be for Gargamel to show up at the party, and that he would give up his wicked ways.

While the other Smurfs try to reason with Sassette to make her see that Gargamel could never change being what he is even for her, the evil wizard watches them from behind a tree along with his cat Azrael. He then jumps out of cover to give chase to the Smurfs, but as Hefty, Nat, Snappy, and Slouchy make a run for the village, Hefty notices that Sassette has gone off in another direction. She finds herself near a cave with a sinister face in front of it, and as she enters the cave to hide inside it, she sees a scale sitting on top of a pillar with a gem on either side. But Gargamel finally catches up to her and pounces upon her to grab her, bumping into the pillar and knocking one of the gems off the scale, causing it to shatter on the floor.

Suddenly, an old, bearded man in a robe appears, calling himself the Spirit Of The Scales, and demands to know who is responsible for shattering the Topaz Of Truth, one of the two gems (the other being the Diamond Of Deceit) that holds the balance between truth and lies. Both Gargamel and Sassette blame each other until the Spirit Of The Scales silences them both and sentences them to be shackled to each other. Gargamel laments the idea of being shackled to a Smurf, and Sassette only wishes that Papa Smurf was here to handle the situation. The Spirit Of The Scales says that without the Topaz Of Truth, the world is now full of lies, and to drive home the point, he makes Gargamel and Sassette see what has happened to the Smurfs since the Topaz of Truth was destroyed: Hefty and the other Smurflings lie about Sassette, Brainy lies to Handy about there being more room for his lift to carry the presents, and even Papa Smurf is found lying.

Gargamel finds the whole thing humorous until the Spirit Of The Scales causes him to duck by blasting an energy bolt at him. He tells them both that it's up to them to restore truth to the world by replacing the destroyed Topaz Of Truth. Sassette asks where they hope to find another topaz, and the Spirit says that it's in the Temple Of Hidden Truths, where there's also hidden danger awaiting them. He says that once they find and replace the topaz, he will free them from their shackles. Gargamel protests the idea of working together with a Smurf just to find a magic gem, but the Spirit forcefully sends them both on their way.

After they have both left the cave together, Sassette asks Gargamel if he will be able to find the temple. Gargamel responds by saying the only thing he cares about is putting the little Smurfling in his stew pot. However, as he holds Sassette up by the cord binding them together, his hand gets singed by a painful shock as a reminder that the two of them need to work together to bring back the topaz. While Gargamel curses at the thought, Sassette tries to tell the evil wizard to cheer up because at least they will get to know each other better and maybe he might even like the little Smurfling. All Gargamel can say is that Sassette must be out of her mind.

Soon, they find the entrance to the Temple Of Hidden Truths, which appears to be a rather foreboding place. Sassette is eager to get the adventure started, but Gargamel yanks her back, saying that he is the one who will give the orders around here. However, he doesn't get far into the temple when he steps on a switch and causes arrows to fly and pin him up on the wall. Sassette says that Gargamel must have done that to protect her from getting hurt, which only makes Gargamel convinced that she must be out of her mind.

As they continue along the same passageway, Gargamel and Sassette both hit a dead end with nothing but a cord nearby. Sassette thinks that they should pull on the cord to see what happens. Gargamel reflexively thinks to warn Sassette at first, but then decides to let her pull the cord, thinking that she might unleash a disaster upon herself. So, she pulls the cord, which opens up a wall in the dead end, but also causes a spiked rock to roll out and flatten Gargamel into the ground. Sassette looks to see if Gargamel is all right, and then points out that it has opened up a new passageway to go through.

Sometime later, the pair are now walking through another passageway with running water that they must walk through. Gargamel looks like he has taken a beating while Sassette still looks no worse for wear, reminding the evil wizard that he would have a lot more fun if he didn't fell into every trap they came across. Suddenly Sassette is pulled under the water, and Gargamel tries to pull her back to the surface when he realizes that Sassette has become fish bait for a very big and ferocious-looking fish with lots of sharp teeth. Gargamel runs for safety, dragging the fish that still has Sassette along with him, until he goes through a door and the fish gets stuck in it until the little Smurfling pops out of its mouth, breaking its teeth. At that point, Sassette is convinced that she is right about Gargamel having some good in him because he always gets her out of danger.

Soon, they see that they are both in the inner sanctum of the temple, with three doors for them to choose. Gargamel opens the first door and faces the fury of a bat-cat ready to strike him. He opens the second door and gets his face singed by a very hot breath of flame. Gargamel then gives Sassette the opportunity to look behind the third door, and she sees that it has the image of the scales etched in stone. Gargamel thinks that the Spirit Of The Scales has lied, that there is no topaz to be found in the temple, but Sassette reminds the wizard that this is the Temple Of Hidden Truths, which means the treasure must also be hidden. She goes onto one of the balances and opens a panel that reveals the topaz that they were both looking for. Gargamel is glad to see the treasure and is rejoicing in the fact that he no longer has to be stuck with her. Sassette feels sad because she thought that after all they have been through, it would make them grow close as friends. Gargamel tries to make Sassette feel better by saying that the adventure has changed him for the better.

Upon their return to the cave, Sassette explains to the Spirit Of The Scales how the adventure has bonded her and Gargamel together in friendship. The Spirit likes how things have turned out for them and so uses his magic to remove the shackles from them both. Sassette hands the topaz to Gargamel so that he may put it back on the scale and restore truth to the world. However, when Gargamel tells Sassette of what he plans to do with her when he brings her home to his place to "celebrate", Sassette is surprised to find that her beloved "Pappy Gargamel" hasn't changed one bit, and the Spirit Of The Scales points out that the holder of the topaz can only speak the truth. This makes Sassette back away from Gargamel, but as he tries to convince her of his "sincerity", he bumps into the pillar of the scales again and causes the Diamond Of Deceit to fall off. Gargamel shows the Spirit Of The Scales that he has saved both gems, but the Spirit is now angry that the pillar is destroyed and so strikes the evil wizard with energy bolts to punish him.

Back in the village, after Sassette reveals what has happened that made the Smurfs act so strange, her fellow Smurflings tell her she hopes she has learned her lesson about Gargamel, that he would never change. Sassette thinks that maybe they're right, yet she couldn't help feeling sorry for the wizard for making the Spirit Of The Scales so upset. At that moment, while the Spirit is busy repairing the scales, Gargamel is forced to stand upon the pillar to act as the scales in order to keep the gems properly balanced. Gargamel asks how long he has to keep this up, and the Spirit tells him that it's only for a few weeks as a "suspended sentence". Gargamel growls as he says that he hates the Smurfs for this, "and that's no lie".
