"Smurf Me No Flowers" is a Season 2 episode from the Smurfs cartoon show.

Characters[]

Synopsis[]

The Smurfs thinks that sleepless Lazy is going to die, so he sets out to do all the dangerous things he was always too lazy to do before.

Plot Summary[]

Out on a bright sunny morning, Smurfette is busy picking flowers in her garden when she sees a dark pair of eyes hiding in it that makes her scream. Four Smurfs respond to her cry for help, saying that there's a horrible monster in her garden. But as they investigate, it turns out to be Lazy who's trying to get some sleep in her garden. He tells his fellow Smurfs that he's trying to find a nice place to sleep because he couldn't sleep a wink, which makes his fellow Smurfs react in disbelief. Later on, Greedy is busy in his kitchen mixing up a recipe when he goes into his cupboard and gets spooked by Lazy being in it trying to sleep. He shoos Lazy out of his kitchen, not caring if his fellow Smurf never sleeps again. Still later, Clumsy goes to the village well after carrying a wagon full of wood so he could get a drink of water, and Lazy shows up again, spooking Clumsy to the point where he goes rolling down the hill with his wagon and knocking over other Smurfs.

Brainy's Farewell Kiss

The news is so shocking, Brainy had to say farewell to Lazy.

Lazy's insomnia problem has made his fellow Smurfs angry with him for all the trouble his trying to find a nice place to sleep has caused. He is being chased away by a mob, but hides behind a mushroom house where Brainy was. He tells Lazy that he should go to Papa Smurf about his problem, which he then explains to the village leader. Lazy asks if there's a potion Papa Smurf could give him that would help him fall asleep, but Papa Smurf tells him the only thing that could help Lazy with his problem is plenty of plain old exercise. Lazy couldn't stand the thought of having to do exercise just to be able to sleep again and so leaves Papa Smurf's house. Then Vanity rushes in after Lazy has left, handing the village leader his poor sick plant, saying that it's all wrinkled. Vanity wonders if its condition is catching, but Papa Smurf tells his little Smurf to go home and rest while he sees what he can do for the plant.

Outside Papa Smurf's house, Brainy asks Lazy if Papa Smurf gave him anything to help his insomnia, and Lazy says there was nothing Papa Smurf could do. Brainy tells Lazy that he will go and find out from Papa Smurf, but as he stands outside the village leader's door, he hears Papa Smurf saying, "Oh, what a pity... if only he had come to me sooner, perhaps I could have helped, but now I'm afraid it's too late." Brainy assumes that Papa Smurf is talking about Lazy and gasps when he mentions that it would be two more days at the most, meaning that Lazy's insomnia was a prelude to something much worse. In reality, though, Papa Smurf was talking about Vanity's plant.

Nonetheless, Brainy goes to tell his other fellow Smurfs about what he heard from Papa Smurf about Lazy having only two more days left and that there's nothing he could do for him. This makes the other Smurfs so sad for Lazy that they decide to throw a going-away party for him to make his last two days easier on him. In his laboratory, Papa Smurf tells Vanity's plant that he will do everything in his power to make it well again. However, he sprinkles a little too much of some powder on the plant, which makes him sneeze and tear up. Brainy shows up at Papa Smurf's door to invite him to Lazy's going-away party, but since Papa Smurf is still reacting to the powder spray, his telling Brainy he is a little too busy with other things makes Brainy think that Papa Smurf is taking Lazy's eventual fate rather hard, so he decides they will have the party without Papa Smurf.

Blue Jacket Painter With Lazy

Painter puts on a different jacket for Lazy's going-away party.

At the party, Lazy is wondering why every Smurf is having one for him, and they try to keep him from knowing what they know about Lazy's condition according to Papa Smurf, but Clumsy accidentally let's slip that it's going to be Lazy's last party, and Brainy just lays it right out in the open, which causes him to be booted out of the party. Lazy leaves the party and goes back to his house, feeling he should have known that's the reason he couldn't sleep. But as the other Smurfs gather around his house to give their condolences, Lazy comes back out and walks past them right out of the village, saying he's not going to take it lying down and that he's going to make the most of his last two days to do the things he was always too tired to do. After hearing the things that Lazy was going to do for his final days, the other Smurfs quickly follow after him.

The first thing Lazy was going to do is ride the wildest rapids, so he takes a rowboat from the shore and starts rowing out into the water. The other Smurfs jump into a second rowboat and follow after Lazy, trying to catch up to him before he enters the rapids. But Lazy wasn't going to stop and soon he goes over the falls, landing safely in the pool below with only his boat full of water. The other Smurfs also go over the falls and have their boat wrecked. Lazy is glad to have his friends accompany him in his final moments. Smurfette suggests to him that they should go back to the village to spend their final moments with him, but Lazy says there's still so much to do together.

So, the next thing Lazy does is climb to the top of the highest mountains, with his fellow Smurfs following along again. Clumsy tells Lazy to slow down because it would be dangerous, and then he slips and tumbles over his fellow Smurfs, clumping them up into a big snowball that rolls down the hill while Lazy reaches the top with no problem and then skis back down to the bottom, passing by the snowball that his fellow Smurfs have become. Again, Smurfette asks if they could go back to the village now, but Lazy says he isn't finished until he finds one final challenge to complete.

Lazy The Bullfighter

Lazy lives out his final days as a bullfighter.

He leads them all to a corral where he shows what that final challenge is: to tame the wildest beast. They all gasp as they see it's a bull that's very angry and ready to stomp Lazy into mush. They think Lazy has gone crazy and plead with him to not go through with the challenge. Lazy asks them if they would deny a doomed Smurf his final wish, and they answer that he would need a cape in order to challenge the wild beast. Lazy heeds their request and goes to the village to get a cape, but while Lazy goes to get the cape, the other Smurfs bring in a cow that's happily chewing on some grass as a substitute, putting horns on the cow so that Lazy wouldn't know the difference. Soon, Lazy returns with his cape and the bullfight begins as Lazy waves the cape hoping to attract the attention of what he thinks is the bull, some Smurfs lure the cow toward Lazy with some hay to make it appear that the bull is charging Lazy. Some other Smurfs were cheering on Lazy and showering him with flowers for his bravery in the bullfight.

Back in the village, Papa Smurf is pleased that he has successfully revived Vanity's plant and so goes out to find Vanity when he sees that there's no Smurf left in the village. Then he hears Harmony's horn and goes over to where the other Smurfs are now: watching Lazy tame the "wildest beast" that's actually a cow being trained to act as if he's charging Lazy. He asks them what's going on, and they say they're giving Lazy his farewell wish, with Brainy reminding Papa Smurf that he says Lazy has only two days left. Papa Smurf tells Brainy that he was talking about Vanity's plant, which Vanity sees Papa Smurf has revived. Brainy then tells Lazy the good news, which makes Lazy suddenly become fearful of the "wild beast" he was trying to tame. The other Smurfs laugh and try to tell him that the "wild beast" is actually a cow -- until the real "wild beast" shows up and has them all running for their lives!

Back in the village, Papa Smurf tells his little Smurfs that before they go off "half-smurfed", there's a lot of life left to be lived every day. Then he turns to Lazy and sees that he is finally asleep, which makes Papa Smurf pleased that Lazy has taken his words about exercise being a good cure for insomnia to heart. But he also sees that all his other little Smurfs are so tuckered out that they fall asleep as well. He then takes Vanity's plant and tells it that they will be eating alone tonight.

Trivia[]

  • In a one-page gag in the comic book version of "The Smurfic Games", Lazy does enact a bullfight -- but his challenger turns out to be a snail!
  • One of the few episodes to be animated at Hanna-Barbera Australia, albeit uncredited. They were also notable for animating Season 2 of the Pac-Man cartoon series, The All-New Popeye Show, and The Scooby-Doo Movies.
  • In the episode during the going-away party for Lazy, Painter wears a blue jacket with a red tie.
  • Brainy kisses Lazy.

Goofs[]

  • There are two visual goofs that remain throughout the entire episode:
    • The color of the Smurfs' tails matches their pants, white and Papa with red, respectively.
    • The napkin around Greedy's neck is a very light reddish gray color.
  • Some village backgrounds and objects are drawn very disproportionate to the Smurfs or vice versa, i.e., too small or large windows, too high cabinets and counters in Greedy's kitchen, etc.
    • Some are also colored incorrectly, especially the beginning scene with Smurfette's house and garden (despite the lighting). Here, her house is uncharacteristically plain in color and the roof is blue with orange spots.
  • While trying to fetch a drink from the well, Clumsy's torso becomes layered above his head.
