Synopsis

Architect and Handy make a smurfominium inside a tree.

Plot Summary

During the middle of winter, as Handy is helping Papa Smurf fix a leaky hole in his roof, Architect comes in to show a new design he has come up with for the new storage silo. Papa Smurf looks at the design and tells Architect that it looks "smurfy", but then he and Handy fiddle around with the designs. Architect is ready to take their suggestions, but then expresses disappointment that it looks like a gigantic Smurf house, and exactly like the silo they built previously. Papa Smurf wonders what's wrong with the old silo design, and Architect just sighs with great disappointment as he leaves Papa Smurf's laboratory, leaving Handy and the village leader rather oblivious.

Smurfominium

Outside the village, Architect sits on a tree stump trying to figure out what he can design that's different from the ordinary Smurf houses he sees in the village when he has a colony of ants pay him a visit on his behind. He swats the ants off his seat and then looks and sees the colony retreat back into the hole in the tree stump he was sitting on. He also sees a hollowed tree behind the stump that soon inspires him with an idea. He goes to get Handy to look at the hollowed tree while sharing his idea with him, and while Handy says Architect has some crazy ideas, his recent one seems like one he is willing to work with Architect to make become a reality as a partner.

Later on, Architect and Handy unveil their creative masterpiece that they made from the hollowed tree to the rest of the Smurfs -- a smurfominium, which Architect says is like 102 Smurf houses all built into one structure. The Smurfs are amazed by the sight of this creation, but none of them really see the point of the smurfominium until Architect explains that with the smurfominium they can have comfort and convenience without engaging in a lot of hard work to keep themselves comfortable. Although Papa Smurf prefers living in his own house, the other Smurfs are enticed by the promises of the smurfominium that they decide that they're going to move in.

Soon, Architect is assigning each Smurf their own apartment as they settle down into the smurfominium, but then problems start to come up as Smurfette complains that there's no hot water and Greedy, Harmony, and Grouchy say that there's no heat. Architect responds by going to the furnace and sees that it hasn't been turned on yet, but before he can turn it on, Handy reports that Vanity was taking a mud bath and now three floors have been flooded with mud.

The problems don't stop there, though. Smurfette finally gets the heat, but her apartment is now so hot that her flowers have wilted, and she can't even open a window. Clumsy is now trying to find his bed, and Smurfette demonstrates that it is a pull-out bed inside the wall, which she almost gets crushed by when she pulls hers out. Hefty and Brainy get inside the elevator with Hefty's weights and Brainy's books, and they start off rising to the sixth floor when the elevator suddenly stops. Brainy cries out for help, but Hefty tries to get Brainy to relax as he tries to get the elevator going again by pulling its lever, only for the lever to break off. Again, Brainy cries for help, but Hefty tells him to get a grip on himself and that they will just have to wait until some Smurf comes to help them. Brainy realizes that Hefty is right and decides that he will read aloud one of his books, which makes Hefty now cry out for help.

At night, Smurfette is having trouble trying to sleep. Not only is her apartment cold again, but also, she can hear Harmony play his music, which he insists on practicing while she is sleeping. Painter creates a hole in her wall as he bangs a nail into it for hanging a picture. Greedy creates a hole in her roof as he bangs on the floor to get the other Smurfs to stop making noises, and Smurfette's fold-up bed folds up into the wall as she and Greedy are still in it. Brainy and Hefty are still stuck in the elevator, and Hefty ends up breaking out of the elevator, leaping onto a nearby tree branch, when he couldn't take anymore of Brainy's reading. During all this, Architect and Handy have been busy dealing with one problem after another, with Architect going down to the furnace to deal with the heating problem when Handy calls his attention to an emergency situation, which makes Architect leave the furnace gate open by accident.

Soon, the two Smurfs take it easy and try to relax on the porch of their apartment, ready to enjoy the view of the whole forest from the top floor, when they notice smoke coming from the lower floors. They now realize that the smurfominium is on fire, and with the Smurf Village Fire Brigade on call to hose down the towering inferno, the Smurfs bravely jump down from their apartments to save themselves. However, Architect refuses to abandon his creation until he ends up having to rescue Handy when the floor collapses beneath him. After they both jump down and the fire brigade has finished their job, the now-safe Smurfs see that the smurfominium is in ruins, and Architect promises to build an even better version. But his fellow Smurfs feel that living in the Smurf Village, even with all its discomforts, was better, with Brainy voicing the thought that smurfominium life is for the birds. Later on, when spring is in the air, Handy calls to the attention of Architect that the remains of the smurfominium has been made the homes for nesting birds, making Architect comment that Brainy was truly right, that it was for the birds.

Trivia

  • The smurfominium was one of the inventions Dreamy has seen in his dream of the future in "Gargamel's Miss-Fortune".
  • Interestingly, after Smurf Village was destroyed in the 2011 Smurfs movie, during the reconstruction, Papa Smurf was inspired by New York City. The newly rebuilt Smurf Village has structures akin to the smurfominium.
  • This episode marks Architect's first appearance.

Goofs

  • When the Smurfs first gather around, Slouchy appears to be the same size of the Smurfs, despite being a Smurfling.
  • In the same scene as above, Papa Smurf appears to be in the crowd (standing beside Slouchy). However, he arrives seconds later asking what's going on.
  • When Greedy and Clumsy question, Hefty, Grouchy, and Vanity are nowhere to be seen, despite being in the background seconds earlier.
  • When Hefty says "Gee, Papa Smurf", his voice is noticeably deeper.
  • All throughout the episode, Hefty's tattoo switches to and from both sides of his arm.
  • When Hefty says, "Smurf it easy, Brainy", his tattoo disappears but reappears seconds later.
