Patchwork is a character who appeared in the cartoon show episode "The Patchwork Bear". He is an animated toy bear with sewed-on patches who works as a guardian of the Crystal Kingdom inside a cave from which the River Smurf gets its water. In the episode, the Smurfs who were investigating the River Smurf being dried up discover him crying and fearful because an evil being named Crackle has taken over the kingdom by imprisoning the Emerald Empress and freezing up the entire kingdom with his magic crystal. The Smurfs help Patchwork to overcome his fears while he helps them find the crystal palace where the Empress is being held prisoner. Although Patchwork was reluctant to go with the Smurfs into the throne room the destroy the crystal, he succeeded in doing so when he saw that his friends were captured by Crackle and threatened to be frozen with the magic crystal. As he charged in to stop Crackle, he slipped and swung across the room with the crystal until he hit a wall, smashing the crystal and thawing out the entire kingdom. After Crackle was banished again to the mountain top, the Emerald Empress awarded Patchwork with a medal for his bravery.
