Characters[]

Synopsis[]

Gargamel removes all of Papa Smurf's magic powers.

Plot Summary[]

The Smurfs are enjoying a picnic that was held in honor of Papa Smurf being nominated Wizard Of The Year by the Wizard's Association, an honor that makes Grandpa Smurf and Smurfette feel proud of the village leader. Jokey wonders about the utility belt that Papa Smurf is wearing, and he explains that it's so he can hold his magic powders to show a demonstration of his experiments at the awards ceremony, which he and Grandpa Smurf will be leaving for right after the picnic. Then Brainy shows up to recite a sample of the acceptance speech he has written for Papa Smurf. Meanwhile, Gargamel spies on the Smurfs from behind a bush and decides to give Papa Smurf the honor of being the soup of the day, as he and his cat Azrael prepare to pounce upon their prey wearing springs on their feet.

Super Papa

You don't want to mess with Papa Smurf when his magic power has been increased!

As Brainy closes out his speech, he asks the others what they think of it. Smurfette screams that it's terrible, which makes Brainy think at first that the speech needs a bit more work, but she reveals that she's talking about Gargamel, as she sees him and Azrael spring out of the bushes towards the Smurfs. While the other Smurfs run for safety, Papa Smurf is ready to spring a surprise of his own and creates a magical whirlwind with his powders to send Gargamel and Azrael flying through the air until they land right back at the evil wizard's castle, with Scruple tending to watering the weed patch. As Gargamel picks himself up and curses Papa Smurf for his action, Scruple tells his master that the day Papa Smurf loses his powers is the day Gargamel will catch Smurfs.

This inspires Gargamel with an idea. He goes to the shop of the Spell Merchant and asks if he has a formula that can permanently remove the power of magic on someone. The Spell Merchant looks through his shelves and finds one that can be cast only once upon a person and is effective as long as its caster desires, that only the caster can remove it. Gargamel is so eager to get his hands on it, that Scruple sees him leave the shop wearing only a barrel, saying that he lost his shirt on the deal. Gargamel doesn't care, as he says it's nothing compared to what Papa Smurf will lose once he casts the spell on him.

At night, at the Wizard's Association awards ceremony, which elves and imps are attending, Papa Smurf watches from behind the curtains as the presenter is on stage making the introductions, with Papa Smurf ready to show them what he is capable of. However, at the same time, Gargamel recites the words for casting the magic-canceling spell and drops the formula into the cauldron, watching as a magic bolt now arcs into the sky until it lands somewhere in the forest. When the magic bolt hits Papa Smurf, he suddenly has a very funny feeling which Grandpa Smurf thinks it's just stage fright. However, as Papa Smurf tries his magic powder for a spell that would make a plant grow twice its size, his first try immediately causes one plant to droop while his second try causes the other plant to rise for a bit before it explodes, making the audience laugh at Papa Smurf's goofs.

Papa Smurf and Grandpa Smurf return to the Smurf Village, with the village leader wondering what went wrong and the village elder saying he probably had an off night. Then Greedy approaches Papa Smurf to ask him if he could use his spell for making dough rise, and Papa Smurf willingly casts it on Greedy's bowl of dough, causing the dough to rise out of the bowl and into the air. Later on, Papa Smurf says that he has tried to do experiments all night and nothing is working, not even the first spell he has learned for making a flower seed sprout. Brainy offers to give it a try and surprisingly the spell works for him as the seed instantly sprouts into a flower. Papa Smurf fears that he has lost his magic touch forever, with Brainy saying that maybe it's time for the next generation of Smurf wizards to take over, namely himself. Grandpa Smurf whispers to Papa Smurf that he'd better get his magic touch back or else they're in big trouble.

As Gargamel, Azrael, and Scruple set off into the forest to capture Smurfs, with Gargamel feeling certain of success now that Papa Smurf doesn't have his powers, Papa Smurf is hitting the brick wall of frustration and beginning to feel that Brainy is right. Grandpa Smurf honestly doesn't agree to Papa Smurf's assessment, saying that he is only five centuries old so he should still be in his prime. Then Brainy shows up wearing sorcerer's clothes and hands Papa Smurf a list of ingredients for him to get for Brainy since he could no longer perform any experiments, which Papa Smurf responds to by throwing him out of the laboratory. As Papa Smurf goes to the mirror, Grandpa Smurf sees in its reflection an aura surrounding the village leader, which makes the elderly Smurf realize that Papa Smurf's ability for casting spells has been blocked by another spell. Grandpa Smurf wonders who would do such a thing, and Papa Smurf says he has a pretty good idea on who.

Speaking of who, Gargamel is hiding behind some bushes with Azrael and Scruple, as Scruple wonders how long they're going to be out there because it's almost dinnertime. Then Gargamel spots their main course coming, as Brainy leads a group of Smurfs into the forest to collect ingredients for his experiments. Smurfette hopes that Gargamel won't show up, but Brainy shows Smurfette that he has come prepared with a vine-growing spell and even wishes the wizard would show up. Gargamel grants Brainy's wish by jumping right out into the open from the bush, which makes the other Smurfs gasp, but makes Brainy boldly respond by throwing the magic powder toward Gargamel and saying "smurfity-doodah"! Unfortunately, the magic powder covers the Smurfs instead and causes vines to grow and capture them, making them easy pickings for Gargamel and Scruple. While the evil wizard and his apprentice collect the captured Smurfs, Handy cuts through his vine and races back to the village to get Papa Smurf.

In Papa Smurf's laboratory, he and Grandpa Smurf discover in a spell book the very spell that was used to cancel out Papa Smurf's magic powers, which says that only the caster of the spell can remove it. As Grandpa Smurf wonders how Papa Smurf will get Gargamel to remove the magic-canceling spell, Handy enters the laboratory to tell Papa Smurf that Gargamel has captured Brainy and the other Smurfs. Papa Smurf sees that he needs to rescue his little Smurfs, but when Grandpa Smurf asks how he will do that, Papa Smurf says he will do it the same way that he will get Gargamel to give him back his powers.

Meanwhile, in Gargamel's castle, Scruple watches with disinterest as his master is seasoning the captured Smurfs, ready to prepare them for dinner. Smurfette tells Gargamel that he won't get away with it, but she barely mentions Papa Smurf's name before Gargamel mocks it, making her believe he is in no danger from the village leader. Then Papa Smurf's voice calls Gargamel's name out from outside, and Gargamel is pleased to see that the village leader has come for dinner when Papa Smurf says that if Gargamel doesn't release the Smurfs, he will use his all-powerful magic. Gargamel laughs, saying that he has removed Papa Smurf's magic powers, but Papa Smurf appears before him and says that the magic-canceling spell was performed incorrectly, stating that it has made him super-powerful. This only makes Gargamel believe that Papa Smurf has lost his mind along with his powers.

But then, Papa Smurf gives Gargamel a demonstration of his "enhanced" magical powers by saying "smurfakadurfra", and soon the wizard, Azrael, and Scruple hear loud rumblings of thunder, which turn out to be Smurfs waving around thin sheets of metal. Papa Smurf goes "smurfakadurfra" again, and demons come flying down from the trees, scaring Azrael. This, of course, turns out to be Smurfs in costumes being lowered down with ropes by other Smurfs hiding in the branches. Papa Smurf goes "smurfakadurfa" a third time, and powerful explosions go off around Gargamel's castle, which turn out to be Jokey's surprises being triggered by string. With one more "smurfakadurfra", Gargamel is hoisted high in the air, which is actually Handy using a crane to grab the evil wizard by the collar of his robe.

Gargamel is now fearful and ready to concede to Papa Smurf's wishes. Papa Smurf tells Gargamel to free the captured Smurfs and then pack up his things and leave the forest or else. The terrible trio quickly rush inside the castle as Papa Smurf threatens to cast one more spell on them. By sunrise, Gargamel has the formula ready and recites the words that would remove the magic-canceling spell on Papa Smurf, and soon the magic bolt returns to the cauldron, with Gargamel saying that at last he has triumphed. Scruple says that with anymore triumphs like this, they would all be goners.

Back in the village. the Smurfs are glad to have Papa Smurf's powers back as he demonstrates the growth spell on a small mushroom, though Grandpa Smurf says that his real power is his brain. Then Brainy shows up in his sorcerer's clothes again and says he has figured out what went wrong with his spellcasting. However, the demonstration causes big vines to grow around their houses as well as around themselves. Handy only sighs and says it's great to have Papa Smurf back the way he was.
