"Memory Melons" is a Season 8 episode from the Smurfs cartoon show.

Characters[]

Synopsis[]

Selwyn tries to tell Tallulah how he feels about her using a memory melon, making things even worse.

Plot Summary[]

Papa Smurf, Sassette, and Nat ride on a wagon driven by their friend Homnibus the sorcerer to Quarrel Castle to attend Selwyn and Tallulah's 200th wedding anniversary, which Papa Smurf sees has drawn quite a crowd. Homnibus only hopes that for once the married couple won't be quarreling during the event. Just then, Tharp comes down to greet his Smurf guests, telling them in his own way how wonderful it is to hear lovely music instead of lovers' quarrels, a sentiment that Papa Smurf shares.

Inside the castle, Selwyn provides the entertainment for his guests by using his magic to have the instruments play a musical composition that he created for his wife. Tallulah thought the sentiment was beautiful and so she kisses her husband, which makes him so distracted that he loses control of the musical instruments as they stop dead and drop to the ground, though the audience simply claps at the abrupt end of the performance. Selwyn thanks his guests and says that now it's time for himself and his wife to open the gifts, but Tallulah tells Selwyn that now is the time for some cake, and as Tharp wheels in the anniversary cake, Sassette says that she wishes Greedy was here to see it. Homnibus sees that the happy moment of peace between the couple would soon be ruined as they both would start arguing over whether the gifts should be opened first or whether the cake should be served first.

Papa Smurf tries to mediate some peace by saying that he would like to have a taste of the cake, as does Nat, so Selwyn decides to accommodate his wife's wishes and goes over to blow out all the candles while making an anniversary wish, but he is so out of breath after a few tries he says that he only wishes he could blow out the candles. Tallulah steps in to do the honors by using her magic umbrella to create a rainstorm over the cake to extinguish the candles, though it also soaks Selwyn, who finds himself so humiliated by his wife that he uses his own magic to make the cake roll down the hallway. Tallulah responds to Selwyn's desire to open the presents by using her magic to knock all the presents off the table and piled on top of her husband. Tharp shows up with the cake he has saved and gets the two to stop fighting with each other, realizing how silly they were acting toward each other before their guests. Papa Smurf, Sassette, and Nat are glad to see that Selwyn and Tallulah care more about their pet Tharp than they do about fighting with each other.

At the end of the party, Selwyn and Tallulah thank the Smurfs for the everbloom and Homnibus for the crystal ball, with the elder wizard saying that he hopes that with it they will see many more happy years together. As the three Smurfs begin to ride off in Homnibus' wagon, Tharp throws his ball toward the two Smurflings, inviting them to stay over at Quarrel Castle to play with him. Nat and Sassette eagerly ask Papa Smurf for his permission, and he allows them to do so, just as long as they stay out of trouble.

While Selwyn and Tallulah look at all the gifts their fellow sorcerers had given them at the party, they both have their own personal gifts that they decide now is the time to give to each other. However, Selwyn doesn't like that his wife had given him a wizard's hat with a sunshade, and Tallulah doesn't appreciate the broom her husband had given her. This results in a fight that the two sorcerers engage in as they use their magic against each other. Outside the castle, Tharp, Nat, and Sassette are having fun playing ball with each other when they suddenly hear the sound of thunder, although there is no visible sign of a storm coming.

At Homnibus' house, Papa Smurf is enjoying a game of chess with his elderly human friend when they hear a knocking on the door. It is Selwyn, who looks like the fight with his wife has injured him, who tells the two sorcerers present that he and his wife got into a spat and that he fears someday that they will both lose their tempers, saying who knows what will happen. Homnibus seems to agree that two angry powerful sorcerers like Selwyn and Tallulah could not only endanger themselves but also everyone else around them. Selwyn expresses his desire to tell Tallulah how much he loves her, but fears that every time he tries to tell her that, the words just all come out wrong.

This gives Papa Smurf an idea: he has Homnibus create something called a Memory Melon, in which Selwyn could recite whatever words he would want Tallulah to hear, and it would play back the exact same words with the exact same feelings when opened. Selwyn tries out the Memory Melon and finds out that it works, which makes him so happy that he can't wait to present it to his wife as a gift. As he is looking for a ribbon to wrap up the Memory Melon with, Tharp has said his goodbyes to Nat and Sassette as they head off to the village and flies into the room where he finds the Memory Melon, opening it to hear his master's "I love you" message to his wife inside it. Tharp responds with a "tharp tharp" and takes it to Selwyn, who finds the ribbon he is looking for to adorn his gift.

Meanwhile, Tallulah is off in another room grumbling to herself, saying it would be too soon before she would want to hear anything from her husband, when Selwyn enters carrying the Memory Melon which he tries to present to her in the hopes of patching things up. However, upon opening the melon, Tallulah hears the last thing it has picked up from her husband about getting rid of "that old bag of wind" (talking about an actual bag of wind) and gets so angry with her husband that she attacks him with her magic. Selwyn gets so angry that his wife rejected his gift that he responds with magic attacks of her own. Tharp could see that the both of them are so heated up in their own anger that he takes the Memory Melon with him and flies away from the castle.

The baby gargoyle finds Nat and Sassette as they are still trying to make their way back to the village, hearing what seems to be a storm coming but seeing no sign of one appearing in the sky. He tells the two Smurflings that Selwyn and Tallulah are fighting again, and shows them the Memory Melon, hoping that they would hear what it has picked up that caused the fight. Nat and Sassette only see that Tharp is hoping to bury the melon somewhere that it will never be found, and nearby they see a hole in a tree into which they can hide the melon. The two Smurflings fly with Tharp back to Quarrel Castle in the hopes that they could stop the couple from quarreling, but as they get closer to the castle, climate conditions around it have become so dangerous that their best hope now is informing Papa Smurf.

Meanwhile, as the wild weather now spreads throughout the whole forest, Chitter goes inside his own house and finds the Memory Melon. He tries to take a bite out of it and finds the melon inedible, so he takes it outside and opens it at the same time that Wild arrives with his forest cry. He wonders about the melon his friend had found and opens it to hear his own cry repeated back to him. Elsewhere in the forest, Papa Smurf notices that the weather has become dangerous when he sees Nat and Sassette arriving with Tharp to tell him that Selwyn and Tallulah are having a fight again. Papa Smurf realizes from this that the Memory Melon hasn't worked for Selwyn as well as he hoped it would, and after the Smurflings tell Papa Smurf that they have hidden the melon, he says that they need to find that melon and return with it to Quarrel Castle before things get out of hand.

Back in the village, Handy is showing Greedy his new automatic table setter, which Greedy says will give him more time for eating. Jokey comes over to ask Handy if he wants a surprise, but Handy refuses, saying that he isn't going to fall for it. Jokey realizes from this that either he needs to have a surprise that's a little more surprising or a Smurf who's not wise to his surprises. At that point, Wild shows up with the Memory Melon which he exchanges with Jokey's surprise present. While the Memory Melon is open, Wild opens up the surprise and gets the usual explosion that every other Smurf does. Jokey opens up the melon again and gets the sound of the explosion played back, knocking him some distance and making Wild laugh. Jokey sees that he could have fun with the Memory Melon, and so he uses it to play a joke on Brainy while he is posing for Painter's picture of him. Brainy finds out what the melon can do and decides to use it for recording one of his speeches which he plays back during mealtime for his fellow Smurfs. Greedy thinks of a much better use for the melon and has it record and play back one of his favorite recipes.

In the forest, Tharp reaches into the hole in the tree that he placed the Memory Melon in and finds only Chitter, who tells the two Smurflings that Wild has taken the melon to the Smurf Village. Papa Smurf says that they need to get that melon before the weather gets more dangerous, but as they fly on Tharp through the turbulent sky, the melon continues to pass from one Smurf to another as Harmony uses it to play back his bad horn playing, Snappy and Slouchy use it to play back a lullaby to get Baby Smurf to sleep, Grandpa Smurf uses it to play back one of his adventure stories, and even Grouchy is amazed that he hears the watermelon repeating what he's saying. In fact, the melon has become such a popular item that the Smurfs in the village are fighting each other just to be able to use it.

Soon, Papa Smurf arrives to stop the fighting among the Smurfs over possession of the Memory Melon, saying that it has brought out the worst in each and every one of them. But at the same time, dark storm clouds have now appeared over the village, which means that Selwyn and Tallulah's marital spats are getting out of control. This means that they must find some way to get the Memory Melon back to Quarrel Castle before the entire forest is consumed in this ongoing duel of the married sorcerers. However, climate conditions around the castle are making it impossible for Papa Smurf and his group of Smurfs to get any closer to its front gate, and soon one of its towers explodes as Selwyn and Tallulah are cast into the very storm their marital spat has created.

Taking shelter inside a tree, Papa Smurf only wishes that Tallulah could hear Selwyn's true loving feelings, which was the reason he and Homnibus created the Memory Melon in the first place. Then Papa Smurf has an idea for how Tallulah could hear what Selwyn has to say to Tallulah: he has Nat fly around through the center of the storm on Tharp while carrying the Memory Melon and capturing key words from Selwyn during his fight with Tallulah in the maelstrom. Then suddenly, the whirlwind rips the tree the Smurfs were hiding in from the ground, and Nat sees that his fellow Smurfs are being carried away with the tree. He and Tharp try to save them, but they also get carried away by the tree. Selwyn and Tallulah both hear Tharp's cry for help and decide to work together to put an end to the storm they created, and so they combine their magic powers to make the wild weather cease and to give the Smurfs and Tharp a soft landing in a pile of hay.

Selwyn and Tallulah are happy to see Tharp again that they both end up arguing over which one of them saved him, when Nat opens up the Memory Melon and Tallulah hears Selwyn say "I love you" in his own words. Tallulah is so surprised to find out that this is what her husband wanted to say to hear all along that she takes him in her arms and the both of them kiss each other, to the pleasure of Tharp and the Smurfs present, happy to see this bad situation end well. After the Smurfs make their goodbyes to the now happy couple and to Tharp as they make their entrance into their now restored castle, Papa Smurf says that there's no need for a Memory Melon anymore. Brainy is so eager to have possession of the melon that he struggles to get it out of Papa Smurf's hands, but instead it flies out and rolls off a ledge, breaking in its landing. Sassette asks if Papa Smurf is going to make another Memory Melon, and Papa Smurf says that he doesn't think so. Of course, this inspires Brainy to come up with another work about his "melon-choly memories", but no Smurf sticks around to hear the rest of what Brainy has to say about it.
