Synopsis[]
Mother Nature trusts the Smurfs that they can create a rainbow on Rainbow Day.
Plot Summary[]
As a leprechaun walks through the Smurf Forest carrying a pot of gold with him and whistling a song, the Smurfs have gathered around the Great Oak Tree decorating it in preparation for Rainbow Day, which they say will be Baby Smurf's first. However, Handy notices that there's hardly a cloud in the sky to cause rain to fall, which means that without rain there cannot be a rainbow, and thus there cannot be a Rainbow Day -- a matter which Brainy eloquently brings before Papa Smurf as he is busy looking through his spell book in his laboratory. Papa Smurf simply says that Baby Smurf will survive Rainbow Day without a rainbow.
Meanwhile, in Gargamel's castle, the evil wizard is looking through his book on the subject of rainbows and tries to read up on how they are formed when he just simply closes up the book in frustration and says everybody knows that rainbows are created by Mother Nature just so that the Smurfs can have an excuse for a party. He looks up at the barren sunny sky in delight and says that they will not celebrate this Rainbow Day.
Back in the village, as Farmer and Painter deal with the lack of rain clouds in their own way -- with Farmer being disappointed for the sake of his crops and Painter being pleased for the sake of his painting. Smurfette suggests to Papa Smurf that they should inform Mother Nature in case she has forgotten. Inside her house, Mother Nature says to herself that she's so busy with having to tend to a volcano. Father Time, who has come to a cup of tea, tries to inform her that everyone complains that there should be rainbow, which she is already aware of.
In the Smurf Village, the Smurfs have gathered to dance, which Papa Smurf notices and asks Lazy, who is sleeping by his lab, what they're trying to do and Lazy replies that they're doing a rain dance. Meanwhile in Gargamel's hovel, the wizard reads that at the end of a rainbow there's a pot of gold that's placed there by a leprechaun, which makes him wonder where leprechauns get that gold, but nonetheless piques his interest enough to prepare for rain.

Papa Smurf decides to pay Mother Nature a visit and offers to help her out with the rainbow while she's doing her business. Mother Nature gives Papa Smurf her Rainbow Book through which the Smurfs can create a rainbow for Rainbow Day while she's gone.
Upon his return to the village with the book, Papa Smurf gets his little Smurfs into action to prepare for creating a rainbow using the book's instructions. Inside a giant cooking pot, Greedy puts the ingredients that Papa Smurf calls out: one can of violet paint and one dozen wild violets; one can of blue paint and one dozen bluebells; one can of green paint and one dozen ferns. However, when Papa Smurf gets to one can of yellow paint and one dozen buttercups, Greedy only has eleven buttercup cookies and one dozen buttercups to put into the pot because Painter has used up all the yellow paint on his painting. Brainy then goes on a tirade about Painter's waste of yellow paint before Papa Smurf silences him. The village leader asks why only eleven buttercup cookies, and Greedy says that he made a dozen but gave one of the cookies to Baby Smurf. Papa Smurf simply lets the matter go as the Smurfs watch a color-changing cloud rise into the sky from the cooking pot, which Painter Smurf calls a masteurpiesa.
Gargamel watches from the window of his castle as he sees a single cloud form in the sky, which means that rain is coming soon. With a rocket that is launched into the cloud by Handy, the single small cloud becomes a big thundercloud that pours down rain upon the forest. Immediately, Gargamel heads out into the forest with his cat in search for the rainbow and hopefully the pot of gold that will be at the end of it. He stands on a tree branch with a surveyor's scope to calculate where the rainbow will appear.
Meanwhile, in the forest, Papa Smurf uses a sand glass to count down the time before the rain dissipates and the rainbow appears, and soon within a minute they see a rainbow form in the sky -- the same sight which makes Gargamel fall from the branch he was standing on as he rushes to get to the place where the pot of gold will be. Smurfette is glad to know that Baby Smurf will get to see his first Rainbow Day rainbow, but Painter tells Papa Smurf some alarming news: the rainbow they created has no yellow in it. This makes Baby Smurf cry, and soon the leprechaun whom Papa Smurf addresses as Michael appears with his pot of gold, wondering why the rainbow has no yellow in it. Papa Smurf explains that he didn't follow the rainbow recipe exactly, and Michael says that he can't put a pot of gold at the end of an incomplete rainbow.
Fortunately, not all is lost. As Clumsy looks in the pot of gold and comments on the "prettiest yellow" he has ever seen, Papa Smurf and Michael are both inspired with an idea: by using Handy's catapult, the Smurfs will launch the gold into the rainbow packed inside one of Jokey's surprise packages. As Gargamel watches, Hefty launches the package into the rainbow, and after it explodes, the rainbow is now complete with a band of yellow. While the Smurfs cheer at the success they created, Papa Smurf invites Michael to attend the party they are having the village, but Michael declines, saying that he needs to take a rest before picking up his pot of gold.
As the Smurfs enjoy their Rainbow Day party, Gargamel arrives at the Great Oak Tree where he sees the pot of gold waiting for him. But as he picks up the pot and looks inside it, he sees that there is no gold left it in. Michael shows up and tells Gargamel that where he is isn't the end of the rainbow, but rather the beginning. Throwing the empty pot onto the ground in disgust, causing it to bounce up and land on Azrael's head, Gargamel tells his cat that they must hurry and reach the end of the rainbow before it's gone. But no sooner after they start heading toward the other end, the rainbow disappears, and all that is left is the empty pot and the leprechaun's whistling as the story ends.
