Synopsis[]

Gargamel gives Clockwork a stone heart when his heart of gold falls out.

Plot Summary[]

In the Smurf Village, Handy is giving his creation Clockwork Smurf a mechanical checkup and says that his heart is "as good as gold" as he reinserts the Heart Of Gold that serves as his power source. Brainy scoffs at Handy referring to Clockwork Smurf as anything other than a machine, and Handy tells Brainy to be quiet or he will hurt Clockwork's feelings. Brainy even scoffs at the idea that Clockwork Smurf has feelings, but after Brainy turns his back on Clockwork, the mechanical Smurf gives the intellectual a boot in the behind. Brainy thinks that Handy has a screw loose, but Handy says he isn't the one with the loose screw.

Meanwhile, at Gargamel's castle, Scruple looks at the lizards he has collected inside a cage, saying that the Dean Of Wizards will have to admit him back into the Wizard's School once he sees them, and then he will finally be able to get out of the evil wizard's home. Soon, Gargamel comes riding along on his new invention called the Smurf Scooper Cycle, which Scruple barely manages to avoid as it passes by, though he ends up losing his lizard collection in the process. Gargamel tells Scruple why waste his time collecting lizards when he could be collecting Smurfs. This gives Scruple an idea: he will collect Smurfs instead of lizards in the hopes that the Dean Of Wizards will admit him back into the school.

Out in the Smurf Forest, the Smurfs are busy picking smurfberries, with Clockwork helping Handy fill his smurfberry scooper machine, when Gargamel comes riding along with his Smurf Scooper Cycle. As the Smurfs go off into hiding, Clockwork stands his ground and waits for the Scooper Cycle to come closer before he grabs it and flings it away, sending Gargamel away on an uncontrollable joyride. The Smurfs are glad to be rid of Gargamel, but then Scruple comes out of hiding with his net and chases after the Smurfs. Clockwork grabs Scruple and spins him around before throwing him into a tree, but as he approaches the evil young apprentice, his Heart Of Gold falls out, and soon Clockwork drops to the ground lifeless. Scruple looks at the inert robot Smurf and thinks he can give it his own little fixer upper.

Soon, the Smurfs stop their running when Handy realizes that Clockwork isn't with them and decides to go back to look for him. Brainy tells Handy that Clockwork is just a worthless piece of junk, suggesting that he shouldn't go looking for him. But as Handy goes to find Clockwork, Scruple is already tinkering with him, saying that the Dean Of Wizards will surely be impressed with it. Then Gargamel finds that Clockwork Smurf is in his hovel, and Scruple explains that he has fixed it so that it will work only for him. However, as Clockwork briefly moves before collapsing, Gargamel sees that the robot Smurf cannot function without a heart, so he decides to give him a heart of stone. Soon, Clockwork is back to life, ready to do his master's bidding. Scruple thinks that now he will be able to return to the Wizard's School with Clockwork Smurf, but Gargamel says that now Clockwork will work for him in collecting Smurfs. Clockwork is so eager to fulfill his new master's desire that he breaks right through the hovel's front door as he rushes off into the forest.

Back in the village, Brainy tries to explain that their successful escape from Gargamel and Scruple was all because of him, but Greedy points out that it was Clockwork who was the hero. Smurfette knew he was right, and wails about Clockwork's fate. But Papa Smurf calms his little Smurfs down, and tells them that Clockwork is still a Smurf, no matter if he still is a machine. Then Clockwork shows up again riding Handy's smurfberry scooper, only this time he uses it to collect Smurfs. The Smurfs flee for their lives as they try to avoid being collected in the scooper like Brainy, who says that this time Clockwork has really flipped his gears.

In Gargamel's castle, the wizard and his apprentice are both fixing up the hole in the front door, with Gargamel telling Scruple that in order to be a truly evil wizard he has to be heartless. Then soon he hears Clockwork's whistle outside his door, and as Gargamel opens he sees that his new mechanical minion has collected some Smurfs while he was gone. Papa Smurf and Smurfette see that Gargamel must be behind Clockwork's change in behavior, and Gargamel promises that soon the Smurfs will behind the bars of his cage.

Handy returns to the village and sees that not only is everything in disarray, but also that every Smurf seems to be gone. Then he hears Clumsy's voice coming from the well that he fell into, and brings up the bucket that Clumsy had landed in. At the same time, as Gargamel is preparing to have a meal with the Smurfs by cutting up some vegetables, Brainy says that a true Smurf wouldn't betray his friends, which only makes Clockwork razz at the know-it-all Smurf. Scruple wants to have the Smurfs his master has collected so he can stuff them and show them to the Dean Of Wizards, but when Gargamel says that those Smurfs will be for his meal, Scruple says to himself he only wishes Clockwork would go catch a few more Smurfs. Clockwork overhears this and busts a hole through the front door again to fulfill his master's desire.

Meanwhile, Handy and Clumsy go out into the forest to look for Clockwork and the Smurfs, with Handy wondering how his creation ever had a change of heart. Clumsy finds what he thinks is a shiny rock near a bush, but Handy sees that Clumsy has found Clockwork's Heart Of Gold, meaning that his creation lost his true heart. Handy needs to find Clockwork so that he can give his Heart Of Gold back to him, but then Clockwork finds them both, and Handy and Clumsy are paralyzed with fear as they see the look in the mechanical Smurf's eyes as he is ready to capture them. Handy tries to reason with Clockwork, to get him to remember that he is not only Clockwork's creator but also his best friend. This stalls Clockwork to the point where he just conks out, leaving Handy to wonder what had happened to him.

Meanwhile, Papa Smurf was stalling Gargamel by saying that he shouldn't have Smurfs for lunch but rather for dinner, and that with Greedy's help, Gargamel could have the meal of a lifetime. As Papa Smurf and Greedy prepare the meal for Gargamel, Scruple still wants to have some Smurfs to take with him to school, and Gargamel says he will talk about that only after dinner. Greedy has poured some spices into Gargamel's Smurf sauce, which the evil wizard says he can't wait to taste. Papa Smurf says for him to have a taste of it now, and he and Greedy both spill the spiced-up sauce onto the floor, leaving Gargamel, Scruple, and Azrael distracted with a bit of coughing while Papa Smurf frees his other little Smurfs from their cages. The distraction doesn't last for long, though, as Gargamel blocks their way out, saying that he won't let them leave as long as his stomach isn't full.

At that point, Clockwork appears with what Gargamel and Scruple thinks are two more Smurf captives for either of them, but Handy reveals that Clockwork has his own heart back as he tosses the heart of stone right back at Gargamel's head. Clockwork keeps Gargamel, Scruple, and Azrael from chasing after the Smurfs who were fleeing by giving all three of them a spin before they get flung out the window, leaving the wizard and the apprentice muttering that they hate Smurfs.

Back in the village, Handy seals up the hatch in Clockwork Smurf's chest to make sure his Heart Of Gold doesn't fall out again, saying that no matter what kind of heart he has, Clockwork will always be a true-blue Smurf. Brainy also has a change of heart about thinking of Clockwork as only a machine when the robot Smurf gives his fellow Smurf a hug.
