Characters[]

Synopsis[]

Miner discovers a strange diamond that Handy uses as a first Smurf television.

Plot Summary[]

Window Vision Receiver

Handy unveils the future of Smurf entertainment.

Hefty, Handy, and Miner have been working all day in the mines, with Hefty saying they haven't found a single thing, but Miner isn't ready to give up on the mine yet. Instead, he manages to dig a new tunnel until he reaches a large glowing crystal. Meanwhile, Hefty gets frustrated and throws his pickaxe at a nearby wall, causing it to crack and to reveal a mother lode of shiny crystals. As Handy looks into one, he sees Miner speaking as though he is trapped inside the crystal. He fears the worst until Hefty shows that Miner appears in all the crystals they have unearthed. They go over to where Miner has found the big crystal, and Handy discovers that it must be the power source that causes whoever looks into it to appear on the smaller crystals. He shows the crystals to Papa Smurf, who is amazed by the discovery and wonders what Handy intends to use them for. Handy has one particular idea in mind, and all he needs is to make a few adjustments.

Soon, Handy unveils before the entire Smurf public his latest invention: the window vision. Everyone is wondering what the box with the crystal in it is for, while Brainy is already scoffing at the invention when Jokey appears behind him on the window vision crystal screen, ready to throw a pie at him! Brainy tries to dodge the pie, but instead of hitting him, it splatters all over the screen, as Jokey threw the pie at the transmitting crystal. Every Smurf is amazed to find what this invention can do, and Handy says that every Smurf will have a chance to perform on window vision. Already Brainy is imagining what he could do with this invention.

The following day, Handy's window vision goes live, starting off with Hefty's exercise program, which Grouchy throws a pillow at for rudely awakening him in the morning. Then comes Farmer's crop report, where he shows how a Smurf can tell if a smurfmelon is ripe enough. Then Brainy presents his idea of a show to Handy, which turns out to be an hour of Brainy quoting his favorite sayings -- a program that after a while makes various Smurfs throw out their window vision sets (in the same manner as what they would intend to do with the star of the show!) and forces Handy to immediately replace it with Poet's Corner.

Meanwhile, in Gargamel's castle, the evil wizard has come up with a new invention to use against the Smurfs, the Smurf Smasher, which uses a spinning drill to pulverize whatever sits on its platform to dust. After a single test run, though, the Smurf Smasher falls to pieces. Gargamel realizes that he needs something harder than stone for the drill and begins to wonder what substance is harder until it dawns on him: he needs crystals. Once he finds the right one for his invention, he will soon be able to use the Smurf Smasher on the Smurfs.

Clumsy dressing in drag

Clumsy looks absolutely gorgeous working as a fashion model for Smurfette!

Back in the village, Papa Smurf has been sitting watching his window vision for hours, looking at the various programs being offered through it such as Smurfette's fashion forecast, Painter showing a flipbook animation of Smurfs which interests Baby Smurf more than the book Papa Smurf was reading him, and Clumsy's "rock and roll" show when he notices the time. He goes out to look for his little Smurfs, only to find that everybody in the village has neglected their chores because they're too busy watching or starring on window vision. He is even more surprised to see that the smurfberries haven't been harvested yet, so he goes to harvest them himself when he stumbles over Lazy sleeping near his window vision set. He awakens Lazy, who finds out that working would be more peaceful than falling asleep watching Harmony play his horn. Brainy also offers to help, as he is personally dissatisfied with what window vision is being used for. Papa Smurf says that he intends to talk with his little Smurfs about watching too much window vision.

Out in the forest, Gargamel is out on a search for crystals for his Smurf Smasher when he hears the voice of the Smurfs coming from a nearby mine. He believes he has found the Smurf Village and so crawls into the mine following the sound of the Smurfs until he comes across one of the receiving crystals. Although disappointed in that he was unable to find the village, he hopes to use the crystal to be able to track down the Smurfs. Then Nat appears with his nature walk show on the crystal, showing how a Smurf can get home to the Smurf Village. Gargamel follows the instructions of the program until he finds himself straight in the village, where he finds the transmitting crystal that he sees would be perfect for his Smurf Smasher. In addition, since every Smurf is too busy watching window vision, it makes them easy targets for Gargamel to grab them and fill his sack full of them.

Later on, Papa Smurf, Brainy, and Lazy return to the village from smurfberry harvesting when they find that the village has been pillaged and deserted. Then Brainy sees what he thinks is a window vision show of Gargamel having all the other Smurfs in captivity, but Papa Smurf sees that this is no show, and that they must go to save them.

Meanwhile, Gargamel tests out his Smurf Smasher with the crystal attached to its drill on a Smurf dummy, and it pulverizes the dummy into dust without causing the machine to collapse. Satisfied with the result, the evil wizard is ready to use a live subject with the machine when he sees that Papa Smurf and Brainy have shown up. They have attached themselves to the shutters with ropes so when they jump down as Azrael jumps up to attack them, the shutters close in front of Azrael. However, as Gargamel approaches the two arrivals, his clothes get caught in the gears of the Smurf Smasher and he finds himself unable to stop the machine. Papa Smurf uses this distraction to get the other Smurfs free from their cages and to make a run for it. Eventually, the machine explodes, taking the transmitter crystal and most of Gargamel's castle with it.

Back in the village, the Smurfs see that the future of window vision has ended, now that the transmitting crystal is gone. Papa Smurf tells them that watching window vision is fine just as long as they don't overdo it, which Hefty agrees, considering that their watching habits have made them sitting ducks for Gargamel. The village leader tells them that someday they will be able to use the invention properly. Then Baby Smurf comes along with the book Papa Smurf wants him to read, and he eagerly sits down to read it aloud to the young Smurf.
