"Gormandizing Greedy" is a Season 2 episode from the Smurfs cartoon show.

Characters[]

Synopsis[]

Greedy is put on a diet, but he is secretly still overeating, making it easier for Gargamel to catch him.

Plot Summary[]

Some Smurfs are having fun playing on a set of swings -- or at least, Smurfette is having fun with Hefty pushing her. Brainy tells Clumsy to give him a push, and he ends up getting pushed off the swing. Greedy asks Hefty to give him a push on the swing, but as Greedy starts to sit down on the swing, its ropes break, and Hefty is left holding the seat of the swing. Greedy says that it must be an old rope, but Hefty thinks it's a heavy Smurf. Later on, at the waterhole, Greedy tries to join his fellow Smurfs for a swim, but the instant he hits the water, the waterhole is completely emptied out, and the Smurfs are left swimming in mud -- which Sloppy and Fly don't mind. This makes the other Smurfs so mad at Greedy that they tell him he needs to go on a diet.

Greedy becomes so upset that he runs to Papa Smurf to tell him what his fellow Smurfs were saying about him. Papa Smurf weighs Greedy on a scale and realizes that what his other little Smurfs were saying about him were right. He tells Greedy that he is overweight and that he must go on a diet and start exercising. Papa Smurf says he must confiscate all of Greedy's cakes, cookies, smurfberry pies, and creampuffs... and after Greedy leaves Papa Smurf's house, the village leader takes away the dessert that's being smuggled under his Smurf hat.

The next morning, Greedy is awakened by Tracker's bird calls, who tells his fellow Smurf that it's time to "rise and smurf". Greedy watches Tracker goes through his house and find all the food he has stored away, putting it inside a barrel, and then hands him a carrot for his breakfast, saying that Papa Smurf appointed him to be Greedy's dietitian. After Tracker leaves with the confiscated food, Greedy opens a floorboard to reveal a secret compartment of food that Tracker hasn't yet found and begins to eat his real breakfast, saying that his diet is a piece of cake.

The next thing on Greedy's itinerary for the day is exercise, for which Papa Smurf has appointed Hefty to be Greedy's instructor. He leads his fellow Smurf to do pull-ups on a tree branch, though Greedy uses a stool to start his pull-ups with. However, Greedy can barely do one single pull-up before he feels himself getting tired from all the effort he's putting into it. Greedy asks Hefty if he could stop now, but Hefty says he's going to get Greedy into shape, even if it hurts him -- which it does when the tree branch Greedy does his pull-ups on breaks off and falls on Hefty.

At dinnertime, Greedy is eager to know what's on the menu, and Tracker tells him it's "spinach juice, lettuce leaves, wheat germ, and oats" before handing him a dish of the combined ingredients. Greedy devours it like it was nothing, and then asks what's for dessert, to which Tracker and Hefty reply that it's "spinach juice, lettuce leaves, wheat germ, and oats".

After they leave, Greedy returns to his secret compartment for dessert only to find that his stash is gone. After nightfall, Greedy sneaks into the storehouse and has his dessert, which by morning Papa Smurf sees that it's emptier than he has thought. He then sees Greedy by the storehouse and asks how his diet is going, and Greedy says that it's going fine, though as Greedy walks away he lets out a stray hiccup, which makes Papa Smurf give a suspicious look at Greedy.

Out in the forest, the Smurfs are all busy collecting smurfberries, as also is Greedy, who is straining to get a smurfberry high upon a bush that he can't reach even with the ladder he is on. He eventually falls off the ladder and tumbles over his fellow Smurfs, who complain that Greedy is now heavier than before when he lands on them. Greedy confesses that he has cheated on his diet, but then the Smurfs have a bigger problem to worry about: Gargamel and Azrael were nearby hiding in the bushes and had found them.

The Smurfs make a run for it, but Greedy can hardly keep up with his fellow Smurfs and is soon caught by Gargamel. The evil wizard tries to cross a log over a ravine, but his weight is causing it to snap and so he backs away. Nevertheless, Gargamel is pleased to have caught one single Smurf, saying that it's better than none at all, which makes Greedy gulp in fear. Back in the village, Papa Smurf is informed of what had happened to Greedy and that he had fooled every Smurf into thinking he was faithfully keeping to his diet and exercise. Papa Smurf agrees to their assessment and says they must now rescue Greedy, but he must get some things from his laboratory first.

In Gargamel's castle, the evil wizard is disappointed that he couldn't catch more than just one little Smurf because of the log but seeing that only one Smurf is better than none at all, he decides to stuff him full of treats until he's big and plump enough to be stretched for a full-course meal. By the time Papa Smurf and his little Smurfs reach Gargamel's castle to find Greedy, they see that he isn't there. Tracker sniffs the air to see if he can find anything and says that he smells a stew. Papa Smurf follows Tracker as he sniffs out a path that leads to Gargamel in the forest preparing a stew with Greedy as the main ingredient.

The Smurfs hide out on a branch and watch as the evil wizard takes the stew pot that Greedy is in and places it on the fire, ready to boil him alive. Tracker makes a joke about Greedy being in hot water, while Papa Smurf uses a magic formula that causes Gargamel to turn his appetite from eating Smurfs to eating vegetables, distracting him and his cat long enough to get Greedy out of the stew pot and make a run for it. But soon, the formula wears off, and Gargamel realizes that the main course has escaped. He sees the Smurfs who have taken his meal away and pursues them through the forest.

They briefly elude the wizard long enough to untie Greedy, who has a plan of getting Gargamel off their tails. Then Gargamel sees that they have crossed the same ravine again, with Greedy trailing far behind them, waiting for the wizard on the middle of the log and taunting him to catch the Smurf. Gargamel tries to pounce on Greedy, but he misses and ends up breaking the log, causing him and his cat to fall into the ravine filled with mud. The wizard curses Azrael and then says one day he will get the Smurfs.

Back in the village, Papa Smurf holds a celebration meal for his little Smurfs because their harvest has been so plentiful. Greedy feels lighter than before and surprisingly passes over a plate of desserts that Brainy hands him. Jokey gives Greedy one of his "surprises", which turns out to be a heaping helping of smurfberry shortcake. Greedy tries to convince his fellow Smurfs that he doesn't need to eat big anymore, but as he attempts to distract them by saying that he noticed a rare smurfbird of happiness so he could eat the dessert, it ends up exploding, covering his face in creamy frosting that he licks off.

Trivia[]

  • The title of the episode is a wordplay using Greedy's original French name, Schtroumpf Gourmand.
  • This is the second time in the cartoon show that a Smurf is shown taking off their hat. The first was "The Smurfette". In this episode, Greedy's the one to do so.
  • A video of some rare original storyboards for this episode can be found on the True Blue Friends DVD. However, it only features the opening scene up until Greedy takes his hat off.
    • This same set of storyboards was showcased in an exhibit by the Belgian Comic Strip Center celebrating Peyo and the 50th anniversary of the Smurfs franchise in 2008, a year before the DVD was released.

Goofs[]

  • Greedy’s appearance never changes but his mass increases to such a degree that he breaks beds and tree branches and logs and ropes (even the rope in Gargamel’s castle).
