Gargamel wants to get his hands on the glittery rocks, and only the Smurfs know where they are.

Five Smurfs are banging hammers against some rocks to crush them into pebbles that Handy can use in his new village garden path when Clumsy is distracted by a butterfly and ends up hitting Brainy's foot with his hammer. Brainy tells Clumsy to look where he's swinging, but in the process of responding he also knocks down Smurfette, Greedy, and Hefty, leaving Clumsy to wonder why everybody's laying down on the job. With Papa Smurf and Handy overhearing Clumsy having problems with his co-workers, the village leader tells Clumsy to go gather up more rocks while the others do the hammering. Clumsy is eager to do that, but his search for rocks in the Smurf Forest comes up empty until he enters a cave and finds a bunch of small crystals that to him look like oddly shaped rocks. Deciding that those rocks will be suitable, Clumsy carts a pile of them out of the cave on a wheelbarrow, though he leaves a trail of them behind. Gargamel the wizard, in his search for Smurfs to fill his stomach with instead of beans and skunk cabbage soup, finds the trail and notices that they are diamonds, which makes him eager to follow the trail in order to find where they came from.

Back in the Smurf Village, Clumsy returns with the crystals, which makes the Smurfs comment on how pale they look and whether they are really rocks. Smurfette is willing to give the benefit of a doubt, but when she strikes the crystal with her hammer, it causes her to vibrate as she is unable to break it. A few other Smurfs try to break the crystals, only to be knocked flat on their backs. Hefty succeeds in breaking the crystal, only for it to turn to dust. The other Smurfs see that the rocks Clumsy has picked up are useless and tell him to go get some good rocks. Clumsy loads them back into the wheelbarrow, frustrated that he can't do anything right.

Out in the forest, Gargamel is frustrated when he finds that the trail of diamonds has ended near a small precipice while Clumsy approaches to dump his load of crystals from it. Azrael tries to point his master to the Smurf with the diamonds, but Gargamel tells his cat that they should be looking to the ground to find diamonds, that they do not fall from the sky. Then a small pile of diamonds falls on Gargamel's head, which makes him see the Smurf on the precipice. Realizing that the Smurfs must have the diamonds, Gargamel seizes Clumsy as he attempts to make a run for it and tries to squeeze some information out of his captive to make him reveal where he got the diamonds. However, Clumsy's cry for help is heard by the Smurfs in the village, and soon they arrive to dump a barrage of acorns onto the wizard and his cat. Gargamel retaliates by throwing the acorns back at them, but in doing so he also throws away the diamonds. After the Smurfs escape from his sight, Gargamel begins plotting a way on how he can get his hands on the Smurfs' diamonds.

Sometime later, Brainy and Grouchy go out into the forest to collect more rocks, with Brainy trying to offer his wisdom and wit to the unappreciative Grouchy when he steps into a rope trap, with Brainy following shortly after. They both see Gargamel approaching and figure that he had set up the traps to have the Smurfs right where he wants them. But as the evil wizard approaches, his behavior is strangely different, seemingly regretful for not having removed the traps as he sets the two Smurfs free. Brainy and Grouchy make a run for it with Azrael chasing after them, but Gargamel stops his cat from going far, revealing that his nice behavior was all a ruse, and it was making him break out in a rash. He then shows up at a quicksand pit he had set up as another trap, coming to the rescue of Smurfette and Vanity as they fall into it, trying to convince the two Smurfs that he has seen the light and that his days of being mean are over.

Somewhere near the village, Papa Smurf and some other Smurfs are busy doing some outdoors work when Smurfette and Vanity return with Gargamel, making the other Smurfs run off in fear. But Smurfette and Vanity reveal that Gargamel is no longer a threat, and that he has even been a lifesaver. Brainy reports that the same thing has also happened to him and Grouchy sometime earlier, that the evil wizard had shown up to rescue them instead of capturing them. Papa Smurf looks at Gargamel rather suspiciously as the human tries to explain and convince the elder Smurf that he isn't the same person he was anymore, to which Papa Smurf can only reply, "Fiddlesmurfs!" Gargamel even offers to bring wood to their village where they could have a nice chat, but Papa Smurf doesn't trust Gargamel enough to allow him any passage as the other Smurfs try to convince the village leader of the once evil wizard's change of heart. After the Smurfs depart, Gargamel says to Azrael that if the Smurfs won't lead him to the diamonds, he'll just have to get them to bring the diamonds to him.

Sometime later, Clumsy goes off into the forest alone when he runs into Gargamel hiding behind a tree. Continuing his ruse of being nice, Gargamel asks the Smurf for a favor of retrieving the rocks he had found that he has in the village. Eager to help the wizard now that he seems no longer a threat, Clumsy goes back to the village to bring a cartload of them. Gargamel now thinks that he's going to get the diamonds, but when Clumsy returns, all the wizard finds is a cartload of regular rocks and he curses that Smurf for bringing them. Then Papa Smurf shows up to say that what the wizard was really after were the diamonds that Clumsy found in the cave, which to humans are very valuable. He tells the Smurfs that Gargamel was simply taking advantage of their kindness to get what he wants and says they are through dealing with him. But Gargamel isn't through dealing with them, as he now offers some nice things that the Smurfs could have in exchange for the diamonds. This attracts the attention of Smurfette, Vanity, and Handy to the point where they are willing to give Gargamel what he wants in exchange for the nice things. The wizard tells the Smurfs to meet him by the river the following day at noon with all the diamonds, and they will get what's theirs.

At the scheduled time, the Smurfs appear with a bag full of diamonds in a cart, and Gargamel also shows up with a sack. But when the Smurfs look into it, they find out that it's empty -- until Gargamel scoops them up into it and says it's not empty anymore. Papa Smurf knew this was going to happen and so he came prepared with a bit of magic to get them out of this predicament. As Gargamel tosses the bag of Smurfs into the river, Papa Smurf casts a spell that causes the contents of the two bags to be switched before the bag that has the Smurfs falls into the river. Then as Gargamel holds up the bag that he thinks has the diamonds in it, a hole opens and the Smurfs fall out of the bag, revealing to the evil wizard that he has actually thrown away his diamonds. Realizing his error, Gargamel jumps into the river and tries to swim after the bag with the diamonds to retrieve it.

Alone at the river, Smurfette apologizes to Papa Smurf for the Smurfs not listening to his advice about Gargamel. Papa Smurf simply says it only goes to show that there are certain people you cannot trust. Brainy tries to offer his wisdom about dealing with such people, but as usual it only gets him booted.
