"Gargamel's New Job" is a Season 6 episode from the Smurfs cartoon show.

Characters[]

Synopsis[]

Gargamel becomes a new court magician at Prince Theodore's castle while some Smurfs travel to visit the prince.

Plot Summary[]

At Gargamel's hovel, Scruple and Azrael are desperate for food. Due to there being nothing to eat, Scruple complains he expected a 'life of luxury' as a wizard's apprentice. The evil wizard attempts to reassure him that's what they'll get once he finally captures the Smurfs. This time, he plans to do so with a new invention, the Smurf-chasing suit, a suit of armor with extendable legs. After putting the finishing touches on it, he leaves to test the invention outside, leaving Scruple to ask what they're going to have for dinner in the meantime. Gargamel's answer leads his apprentice to "break the fourth wall" by making a remark towards the audience at the wizard's expense.

Gargamel's New Job 2

Meanwhile, Papa Smurf, Smurfette, Brainy, and the Smurflings are planting a new smurfberry patch out in the forest. The Smurfs hear hammering nearby, which turns their attention to Prince Theodore and his men putting up posters. Theodore explains that he's holding auditions for a new court magician to replace the evil Morlock, who was imprisoned after the events of "The Prince And The Hopper". Papa Smurf is the only one in the group offered the job (much to Brainy's disappointment), but he turns it down in favor of his role as village leader. The prince then reveals none of the hens in his kingdom will lay eggs, a problem only a wizard can solve. Much to his delight, Papa Smurf claims he could come up with a spell to fix the issue as soon as he returns to the village.

On the walk back, Smurfette wishes to be the one to bring the spell to Theodore's castle, which makes the Smurflings eagerly request to be taken along with her. Suddenly, the group's walk is interrupted by none other than Gargamel, who had been walking through the forest in pursuit of the little blue creatures, still wearing the suit of armor. Upon being chased by the evil wizard, Papa Smurf urges the rest of the Smurfs to empty their sacks of smurfberry seeds. His quick thinking proves useful, as Gargamel trips and slides over the seeds, the suit's long legs tilting forward and leading him crashing to the ground, taking a smaller tree down with him. Separated from the fallen wood, one of the prince's posters floats its way down to him, catching the wizard's intrigue.

Back at the hovel, Scruple sarcastically asks Azrael about the basket of nuts that they would now have to eat, the cat equally disgusted. Gargamel finally returns from his failure, confident that the audition poster will lead them to their future in luxury, despite Scruple’s doubt regarding him matching the required qualities listed.

Gargamel's New Job 3

Gargamel the "Great" hoping to impress.

In his castle, Theodore is being treated to an audition by a magician named The Amazing Manfred. This act leads nowhere, as did the ones preceding it, leaving the prince with a sense of hopelessness. He is then told one last audition is left, belonging to Gargamel (going by "Gargamel the Great") and Scruple (his "Wonder Boy"). For his audition, the wizard attempts to make a potion mixture with many ingredients, including what he believes to be bat oil. Scruple catches onto his mistake, but Gargamel disagrees with him, fully confident in his knowledge of the solution. This ignorance causes the mixture to backfire, resulting in a magical tornado that engulfs the two and leaves them dangling from a chandelier. Once they ungracefully fall to the ground, Theodore approaches Gargamel to give him the news he is now the new royal court magician, much to the surprise of both.

Somewhere in the forest, Clumsy is on his way back to the village, carrying some new rocks for his collection with the help of Hefty. Poet rushes in their direction, excited for the pair to hear his new poem. After Poet reads his newest work aloud, the group overhears Gargamel ordering one of Theodore’s men to be careful with his belongings. A royal horse-drawn carriage is sat in front of the hovel, constantly being loaded with the villain's items. The three Smurfs watch this scene unfold, hidden in some greenery. When the packing is all done, Gargamel and Scruple are taken away in the carriage and happily shout farewell to the problems that plagued their old lives. Clumsy and Poet are shocked by this, while Hefty urges them to tell the others of what they just witnessed.

Back at Smurf Village, Papa Smurf gives the egg-laying spell to Smurfette. The Smurflings, already aboard Feathers, once again express their excitement and impatience to see the castle, Smurfette then joining them aboard the stork and the group finally taking their leave. Seconds later, Poet runs up to Papa Smurf, out of breath, revealing all the other Smurfs are at Gargamel's hovel, much to the leader's dismay. He then clarifies that the evil wizard appears to be gone forever.

In the trio's new room at the castle, Gargamel praises the layout, while Scruple praises the food. Azrael, with his own luxuries, happily agrees with them. Soon after, Theodore pays them a visit, telling the wizard his men are ready to place his old items into the cellar. Gargamel replies that he’ll supervise the matter himself and leaves along with his apprentice.

Behind a locked cell door, Morlock questions the guard standing watch if the prince really found someone to replace him. Upon hearing the answer, he mocks Gargamel's name, likening it to “some sort of cough medicine”. When he spots the wizard in question threatening some of the castle’s men over his belongings, Morlock makes a bitter remark that catches his attention. In an attempt to get on his good side, he puts on a charade. Gargamel thinks nothing of it, believing it has to do with his newfound reputation. Morlock explains he was the previous royal court magician and got jailed due to "politics", the guard then pointing out that he attempted to get rid of the prince and take over the kingdom.

Gargamel is then interrupted by one of Theodore’s higher-ups, who tells him the prince needs him to cast a spell. The wizard stutters, not expecting to be doing magic again so soon. Morlock then offers, if Gargamel needs any help, he’d be more than happy to oblige as he knows all the kingdom’s spells. The other wizard thanks him, but declines his offer, still too confident in his own abilities. He insults him to Scruple and leaves.

Meanwhile, the Smurfs are at Gargamel's hovel, singing and celebrating his disappearance. Poet and Papa Smurf have arrived, the latter realizing Poet was telling the truth. The others, such as Handy, Painter, and Lazy express their happiness over the event and how nothing of the wizard's remains except for papers and dust. Papa Smurf, confused, asks where Gargamel went, something the others aren't worried about.

Gargamel's New Job 1

"An egg-laying spell? I've never heard of such a thing."

On Feathers, Smurfette and the Smurflings near their destination. Inside, Theodore tells Gargamel he wants him to cast the egg-laying spell for his hens. The new court magician isn't familiar with this spell, the prince then pointing out Morlock used to cast it all the time. Gargamel nervously agrees to cast it, Theodore gleefully requesting he do so as soon as possible. Walking down a hall, Gargamel tells Scruple of his unfamiliarity with it, the apprentice then suggesting he ask the prisoner for help. Stubborn, Gargamel insists he'll figure it out himself. Outside, the group of Smurfs finally get off the stork and bid farewell to her.

Back at home, the Smurfs are decorating for a going away party in Gargamel's absence. While putting up a banner, Handy and Hefty converse about the event, the latter mentioning the villain being driven away in a royal coach. In a rush, Brainy appears and presents Papa Smurf with the audition poster he had found among Gargamel's papers. This leaves Papa concerned about the safety of Smurfette and the Smurflings back at the castle.

In his room, Gargamel tries to mix (what he thinks is) the egg-laying spell when he spots the aforementioned messengers trying to climb in through the window. They quickly leave, realizing their mistake, and Gargamel rushes over to the window in a frenzy, leaving the cauldron unattended. After he bickers with Scruple, the spell explodes, causing storm clouds to form around the kingdom, raining eggs down upon the guards and the prince. Theodore bursts in, angrily asking the bumbling court magician what he's done. Gargamel tries to reassure him he can fix the issue, only to accidentally change the eggs to chicken feathers, which the prince is allergic to. Smurfette and the Smurflings are struggling to walk as the chickens feathers are going their way as well. They end up finding a window and jump inside it and successfully get in the castle.

Meanwhile, Papa Smurf and Brainy are with Puppy in the forest as Puppy is running fast. Brainy is worried that they will not make it in time, but Papa Smurf assures him that they will… hopefully.

In Prince Theodore's room, he is mourning the destruction of his castle. Gargamel tries to tell him to look on the bright side: the mattresses his subjects could stuff. The Prince has had enough of his and Scruple's antics and gets out the guards, but Gargamel starts crying on his shoe, making the Prince feel bad for him and he gives him one last chance, if he does not make a spell work.
