Characters[]

Synopsis[]

Jokey's new Gargamel puppet comes alive by Gargamel's magic and plans to destroy the Smurf Village.

Plot Summary[]

In the Smurf Village, Grandpa Smurf is showing the Smurflings some magic tricks he has learned, which makes Sassette say that he is going to be the hit of the talent show, but Grandpa says that he's certain the other Smurfs will do just fine. Sassette is thinking of performing with her pet frog, and Clumsy is thinking of doing a juggling act, though when he attempts the juggling, he accidentally bumps into Grandpa and causes all the elder Smurf's "hidden talents" to fall out from his robe. Tailor asks Jokey what he plans to do for the talent show, and Jokey simply says that it's a secret. Brainy says he will astound everyone with his amazing "mind-reading ability", and already he's predicting that Jokey will play the same old jokes that he plays every year.

Jokey goes out to prove Brainy wrong as he prepares his special surprise. He asks Handy for some wood, Painter for some paint, and Tailor for some little clothes he can use. They all wonder what Jokey was going to do with all that, while Papa Smurf goes through the entire list of performers, with "the amazing Brainy" being the last on the list as he appears wearing a turban and cape. Sassette wonders where Jokey's presentation is on the list, and while Papa Smurf tries to answer Sassette's question, Brainy simply responds with indifference. Just then, an evil wicked voice commands Brainy to be quiet, and Brainy runs off thinking that it's Gargamel. As it turns out, it was simply Jokey doing his impression of Gargamel, who is now ready to show his fellow Smurfs what he was working on: a ventriloquist dummy in the form of Gargamel. The other Smurfs are amazed at how the dummy is able to speak in Gargamel's voice, and though Brainy thinks that there is some little person hiding inside the dummy, Grandpa Smurf says that it's simply Jokey being able to throw his voice, which is a talent that Jokey trained himself to have. Brainy just scoffs at Jokey's presentation idea, saying that the dummy will be nothing but trouble.

Meanwhile, out in the forest, the evil wizard Gargamel is coming back from visiting the Wizard's Library and complaining about having to pay for some books that were about a couple of decades overdue. Nonetheless, he is glad that he is able to borrow a new book called 1001 Spells To Destroy Your Enemies. As Gargamel is eager to put the book's knowledge to practice, he suddenly hears the Smurfs nearby and investigates, seeing Jokey and Sassette practicing for the talent show with their talents. Gargamel is appalled that one of the Smurfs would have the gall to mock him with a Gargamel dummy, but as Jokey and Sassette chase after the little Smurfling's runaway frog and Gargamel misses as he tries to pounce upon them, he sees that the dummy was left behind and decides to do something with it to destroy the Smurfs. He looks through his spell book and finds one for bringing puppets to life, then casts the spell on Jokey's dummy. He hears Jokey and Sassette returning after they retrieved the frog, and so he and Azrael go into hiding and watch Jokey retrieve his dummy so that he can join the Smurfling in getting back to the village in time for the talent show. Gargamel lets out an evil chuckle, realizing that with Jokey's dummy now coming to life, there will soon be homeless Smurfs just ripe for the picking.

Back in the village, as Jokey is looking for his Big Book Of Laughs, his dummy comes to life and starts creeping around the village looking to start trouble. He comes near Painter's studio and distracts the village artist long enough to go inside and vandalize his house, making him so angry and thinking that Jokey must be behind this. He goes into Tailor's clothing shop when that Smurf isn't there and starts making some "alterations" to all the costumes that were made for every Smurf, also making the village clothier think that it's Jokey who did this. He also goes up onto the roof and cuts the high wire that Snappy is practicing his tightrope act upon, causing him to fall into Greedy's kitchen and splatter himself and the village cook with cake batter.

Finally, Jokey finds his joke book in the cellar, but when he comes out, he sees that his dummy is gone. He looks outside to try finding where the dummy went, when he sees that the dummy has come to life, and now it is speaking in Gargamel's actual voice. Jokey suspects something seriously wrong and so chases after the dummy. While the Smurfs affected by the dummy's tricks bring up the matter of Jokey being behind it all to Papa Smurf, Jokey finds the dummy inside Handy's workshop trashing the village builder's multiple-instrument music machine. When the other Smurfs hear the ruckus and enter the workshop, they only find Jokey with the dummy and what was left of Handy's music maker. Jokey claims that the dummy did it, but Papa Smurf isn't convinced and so tells Jokey that he can't participate in the talent show. Brainy simply tells Jokey that it's too bad and that it's all his fault.

Alone with his dummy, Jokey tells him that it's all his fault. The dummy tells Jokey not to blame him, but rather Gargamel, for he is the one who gave the dummy life, and now he intends to destroy the Smurf Village. Jokey grabs the dummy and stuffs him in the cellar, locking the door with a bolt so that he can't get out. Jokey realizes that he has to prove his innocence in the matter and keep the village from being destroyed. As Gargamel goes looking for the village and the dummy tries to look for a way out of the cellar, Jokey disguises himself as the dummy so he can get into the evil wizard's lair and find the spell to make the evil puppet lifeless again. With nobody home, Jokey goes inside and looks through the spell book on Gargamel's table, but just as he finds the spell, Gargamel returns and notices the dummy, seeing that it's much bigger than before. Jokey slips out of the costume and grabs the page from the book as he makes a run for the village. Gargamel and Azrael pursue him, but Jokey quickly sidesteps and lets them both slide into a mud puddle to give them the slip.

Back in the village, as the Smurfs are watching the talent show in progress, Jokey's dummy is busy setting up surprise presents around the village in the hopes of blowing up every Smurf house in a single chain reaction by pulling the ribbon of one box. Clumsy, however, notices that Jokey's dummy is alive and on the loose and so rushes to tell Papa Smurf about what he saw and heard. The village leader and several other Smurfs approach the dummy as he is ready to pull the ribbon on the surprise that triggers the others, with the dummy threatening to blow everything up if anyone takes one more step. Then suddenly, Jokey appears and pounces on the dummy, using the spell from Gargamel's book to make him lifeless again. The Smurfs are relieved, apologetic, and thankful for Jokey coming just in time to save the day.

Later on, at the talent show, as Brainy is about to have a member of the audience come up on stage for him to demonstrate his "mind-reading ability", Jokey's dummy appears on stage to tell Brainy to "read my mind", scaring Brainy away. We see that Jokey is now manipulating the dummy like a marionette and throwing his voice, which makes Brainy respond with a sarcastic "Very funny, Jokey" and Jokey through his dummy saying "Was it something I said" before breaking out in laughter.
