"For The Love Of Gargamel" is a Season 2 episode from the 1980s Smurfs cartoon show.

Characters[]

Synopsis[]

While chasing the Smurfs, Gargamel spills his formula and turns himself and Azrael into stone.

Plot Summary[]

The story begins with Gargamel ranting and raving over capturing the Smurfs only to constantly lose them. He shows his cat Azrael a potion that he will spray on the Smurfs the moment he captures them one by one. He sprays a bit of the potion on a flower and sees it turn to stone, casually tossing it onto Azrael's head before it lands on the ground with its leaves broken. Soon, he says, the forest will be littered with little bits of stone Smurfs, as he and his cat laugh maliciously at the thought.

It's too bad Papa Smurf wouldn't let him stay like this forever!

Meanwhile, Smurfette, Tracker, and Lazy are out in the forest gathering herbs for Greedy Smurf's soup -- or rather, Smurfette and Tracker are doing most of the work while Lazy is taking a nap. When Smurfette asks Lazy if he found any herbs, he gets up and makes it look like he's going to find it somewhere else when he's really just looking for another place to doze off. His snoring gets picked up by Gargamel, who sees that a Smurf is nearby, and soon the evil wizard has Lazy in his grasp.

Lazy cries for help, which Smurfette and Tracker immediately respond to, as Gargamel sprays a bit of the petrifying potion toward his captive Smurf, who ducks out of the way of the spray as it petrifies a nearby tree branch instead. Lazy then bites Gargamel's hand, causing him to let go and drop the Smurf onto the ground, bouncing off Azrael's head. The wizard and his cat give chase to Lazy, who escapes them by being pulled into a rabbit hole by Smurfette and Tracker, who signal him to be quiet.

Gargamel searches a nearby bush for the runaway Smurf while Azrael picks up his scent from the rabbit hole and tries to swipe at him with his paw. Then Gargamel steps on Azrael's tail, causing him to leap up high and hit his head on a tree branch before landing on his master's head, causing the bottle with the petrifying formula to fly out of his hand and over his head. Gargamel scolds his cat for his mishap just before the bottle lands on his head and breaks, soaking them both in the potion and turning them into a statue.

Lazy, Tracker, and Smurfette pop their heads out of the rabbit hole to see that their constant enemy has been turned to stone. This makes them run to the village to tell the other Smurfs about the news, and so they drop what they were doing to see for themselves. Even Papa Smurf, who is the last one to hear the news, was curious. They first cautiously approach the wizard's petrified form and stare in wonder at the sight of him being snared by his own devices, then they see that they have nothing to fear from Gargamel anymore as long as he is stone. Hefty and several other Smurfs have a race to climb up to the top of "Mount Gargamel", where Hefty tries to punch the wizard in the nose and hurts his hand. Another group of Smurfs do a merry circle dance around Gargamel. Smurfette and some others strike poses around the statue for Painter's latest masteurpiesa. They all rejoice in seeing that Gargamel can't do them anymore harm.

But then, Papa Smurf shows up and asks his little Smurfs what's going on. Amid a flurry of responses, the village leader finds out that Gargamel had caused himself to be turned to stone. He tells his little Smurfs to follow him as he heads to Gargamel's castle to find an antidote. This makes the little Smurfs ask Papa Smurf why he wants to save Gargamel, considering his constant evil nature, and he tells them that if they don't save Gargamel and Azrael, then they are no better than their own enemies.

At the castle, Papa Smurf finds the book that contains the antidote, but sees that part of the page has been worn away, so there's one ingredient that's missing. Tracker hastily closes the book on Papa Smurf, saying that they did their best, but Papa Smurf is insistent on finding the missing ingredient for the antidote. Tracker tries to tell Papa Smurf that Gargamel is their enemy, but Papa Smurf is not saying they have to like Gargamel, only to save him and his cat, and that someday his little Smurfs will understand.

Back in the village, while Papa Smurf has Clumsy bring in all his books from the storehouse so that he could find the missing ingredient, the Smurfs are so depressed over Papa Smurf's decision to save Gargamel and Azrael from their accidental self-petrification that Painter doesn't have any inspiration to paint anything and Jokey can't even laugh at his own exploding "surprises". This inspires Handy to build a mechanical Gargamel as a reminder of how terrible things were when he was around. Smurfette, however, starts to feel a bit sorry for Gargamel being as he is now, but when Tracker asks her to name one good thing about the evil wizard, she is at a loss for what to say.

Soon, Handy's mechanical creation is in operation, and the village inventor steers it around the village, making all sorts of threats that Gargamel would say, while his fellow Smurfs laugh. Then the mechanical Gargamel trips over a wagon, causing Handy to lose all control over his creation as it runs amok through the village before finally crashing into Papa Smurf's house. At that instant, Papa Smurf tells his little Smurfs that he has found the missing ingredient for the antidote, the rare herb called revivus animatus that is only found on the cliffs on the edge of the forest. While he tells the other Smurfs to clean up the mess, Papa Smurf asks Tracker to go fetch that rare herb, which he reluctantly says that he will.

As Tracker sets off to find the rare herb, grumbling to himself over the wisdom of Papa Smurf's decision, a thunderstorm starts over the forest. After carefully scaling up the mountain, Tracker sees the herb that Papa Smurf needs and grabs some of it, saying this should bring Gargamel back to life, and he'll probably regret it for the rest of his own. But then lightning strikes the top of the mountain, letting loose a rockslide that traps Tracker, unable to pull himself free. He calls out for help, hoping somebody will find and rescue him.

Back in the village, Papa Smurf and the other Smurfs are getting worried about Tracker taking too long to return and so they set off to find him. He is soon discovered and is grateful for the rescue as he was starting to despair ever seeing his fellow Smurfs again. As he warms himself up with a blanket around him, Tracker says that he now learned how important all life is, even Gargamel's, and gives Papa Smurf the herb he needs to complete the antidote.

The next day, Papa Smurf and Tracker fly on Feathers over the Smurf Forest to safely dump the antidote onto Gargamel and Azrael. They are restored to normal, only for Gargamel to see that his bottle of the petrifying potion was broken and spilled. This makes Gargamel so angry at the Smurfs that he calls them every single rotten thing he can think of, which in Papa Smurf's and Tracker's hearing means that things have returned to normal.
