Characters[]

Synopsis[]

Maestro, a painter who's stuck in a painting, gives Painter magic colors in order to free himself from the picture.

Plot Summary[]

It is a bright sunny morning in the Smurf Village, and Papa Smurf greets Smurfette as she is watering her flowers. She says that the day looks as pretty as a picture. However, she soon hears Painter complaining about his picture being no good, so she goes over to find out what is wrong. He tells Smurfette that he is unable to capture the life in the flower that he is painting. Even with his fellow Smurfs commenting on how beautiful his picture really is, Painter is still not pleased with his efforts. Smurfette is willing to have Painter's painting if he really doesn't want it, but Painter is so frustrated with himself that he throws his painting on the ground and stomps on it before saying that he is finished with art and that he is going away forever. Smurfette is so worried that she goes to tell Papa Smurf about it, but Papa Smurf assures her that this has happened before with Painter and that he will return.

Magic Colors (Every Picture Smurfs a Story)

Out in the forest, high upon a rockface, Painter is wondering why he can't paint a picture that can capture life when he notices something sparkling in the distance. He goes off toward that direction and finds a castle where there's a painter's studio with artwork in it that seems to really capture life. He finds a portrait of what's presumably the artist behind the works leaning near a wall and dusts it off. Believing that the artist was unable to finish it, Painter offers to apply the final touches to the portrait. However, as he walks off lamenting that his paintings will never capture life, Painter hears the painting talking to him, saying that they can. The figure in the portrait calls himself Maestro, saying that an evil wizard had put a curse on him and that he has been imprisoned in a painting ever since. He is willing to share with Painter the secret of creating paintings that capture life if he does what the artist says. Inside a nearby wall, Painter finds a vial of liquid that Maestro says contains spirits that will give an old painting new life. He wants Painter to promise that he will give his portrait a fresh coat of that liquid so that he will be well preserved, which Painter upholds by finding a brush and applying the vial's contents on the portrait. With that fulfilled, Maestro tells Painter to mix a few drops of the liquid into his paints, and his pictures will be able to capture life. Painter is so excited with that thought, he thanks Maestro and heads back to the village, eager to try it out and hoping Maestro's curse would be broken soon. After Painter is gone, Maestro smiles wickedly, saying that it will broke sooner than his protege thinks once he paints a portrait of someone to take his place.

Painter rushes into his studio, knocking over Clumsy in the process after he reenters the village, and puts the vial's liquid into all his paints, ready to paint his first subject. He thinks about what to paint first, then inspiration hits him. He rushes past Papa Smurf and goes into Smurfette's house where she still has Painter's earlier picture hung on her wall, then starts repainting the picture very fast until finally his efforts have paid off... the picture now captures the life of the flower! Smurfette and Brainy are so impressed that they show Papa Smurf and the other Smurfs what Painter has done. As they gaze at the painting, they don't notice that the flower itself has disappeared. Back in Maestro's studio, the trapped artist is beginning to feel what Painter has done and is eagerly waiting for him to paint his first portrait.

Every Smurf is now gathered around Painter, wondering what he's going to paint next. Greedy wants him to paint a picture of his cake, while Farmer wants him to paint a picture of his prized smurfberries. Lazy wants a picture of his bed to be painted. Vanity is offering himself to be a subject of a portrait. Painter tells Vanity that true art can't be rushed as he goes off to work on his next subject, which turns out to be Greedy's cake. The village chef sees that it is so real it makes his mouth water just looking at it... though he doesn't notice that the cake itself disappears. Lazy has a small picture of his bed painted so that he can carry it wherever he goes, and it too is so real that Lazy can't stop looking at it... though when Lazy tries to go to sleep on his bed, it ends up disappearing. Farmer has a picture of his smurfberry bush painted, and he comments that it is like magic, wondering what Painter's secret is. Painter says that he has met an artist named Maestro, and before he could reveal what that secret is, Brainy guesses that what Maestro gave him was inspiration. Nevertheless, Farmer is pleased with the results and takes the picture home with him... though he doesn't see that the smurfberry bush has now disappeared.

With Papa Smurf now complimenting him on his work, Painter is inspired to come up with a portrait as his next work of art... but he feels that it must be a surprise. While Vanity goes off to prepare himself for the portrait, thinking that he will be the subject, Painter begins work on it right away, already knowing who he is going to paint. Meanwhile, Smurfette turns away from looking at her picture and sees that her flower is gone. Greedy turns away from his picture and sees that his cake is gone. Lazy wakes up and finds that his bed is gone. Farmer goes out into the fields to water his smurfberry bushes and finds that his prized bush is gone. They all go crying out to Papa Smurf, telling him that the things Painter has painted are now gone, with Farmer saying that Painter had met an artist named Maestro in the forest -- a name that Papa Smurf seems to recognize. Brainy said that Painter was working on a new painting that was supposed to be a surprise. Papa Smurf says that they must stop Painter from doing anymore painting. But as they enter the studio, they see that he has finished his portrait -- that of Papa Smurf. Soon he disappears right before their eyes, only to come to life in the painting itself.

Taking the painting of Papa Smurf with him, Painter and the other Smurfs return to the studio where he originally encountered Maestro, only to see that he is no longer in the painting. Maestro is now outside the painting, and he plans to continue his work with his magic paints, taking them away from Painter. The Smurf artist asks Maestro what's going to happen to Papa Smurf, and Maestro answers that in a few hours the village leader is going to be a permanent exhibit. Through Papa Smurf's suggestion, Painter then appeals to Maestro's vanity to show him what true great artistry is, which Maestro accepts by following the Smurfs into the village.

While most of the Smurfs keep Maestro occupied by making such a big fuss over him, Handy takes Papa Smurf's painting into his laboratory and has him work on a formula similar to what Maestro used in his paints. Brainy, meanwhile, goes to distract Maestro as he attempts to do his next work of art, offering a lot of confusing painting suggestions, while Painter sneaks away into the laboratory to test out the formula on Smurfette's flower painting. Unfortunately, the formula causes the painting to vanish, which means they will have to try something else on another painting done with the magic paints.

Maestro is finished with his painting, which causes the tree and shrubbery that he painted behind it to vanish, when he notices that his apprentice has gone off. He angrily demands the Smurfs to tell him where Painter had gone, or he will paint their entire village. Brainy fearfully points in the direction of Papa Smurf's laboratory, and as Maestro looks, he sees Smurfette emerge from it. He finds himself so enraptured in her beauty that he goes after her, wanting to have her become his eternal inspiration. Smurfette tells the artist that she is happy where she is now, but he isn't willing to take no for an answer. While he starts on another painting to impress Smurfette, she goes to tell Papa Smurf what Maestro wants with her. Papa Smurf, who is now finding himself becoming frozen in the painting, now tells his little Smurfs that they must somehow switch paints with Maestro's.

As to how they will get the paints, Smurfette thinks of a way. She goes to find Maestro has painted her entire flower garden, and though she finds it pretty, she tells him that Painter could do a better picture. Maestro finds himself being challenged by Smurfette's comments, claiming that he is better than Painter. Smurfette says that today just happens to be the day of the Annual Smurf Art Festival, which is the perfect opportunity for Maestro to prove his claims, and that whoever wins the festival with the best painting gets to have her as his eternal inspiration. With every Smurf saying that they will judge the winner, Maestro decides that he will accept the challenge, but if he loses, he will paint Smurfette into his possession.

Out in the smurfberry fields, Painter and Maestro are waiting for Smurfette to pick the subject to paint when she spots a butterfly. Maestro says that it will be too easy, but then the butterfly starts fluttering away, causing Maestro to chase after it. Painter winks at Smurfette, suggesting that their plan is working. After Maestro exhausts himself chasing after the butterfly and then starts painting it, he falls asleep, allowing Painter to switch his own paints with Maestro's and handing them off to Smurfette. But then Brainy bumps into Smurfette, spooking her and causing Maestro to wake up. She then hands the paints to Brainy and tells him they can't let Maestro know they're nearby. Brainy hides behind a bush and watches as Maestro takes his easel with him to pursue his subject. However, he leaves his paints behind, so Brainy swaps the paints, not realizing that he was giving Maestro back his paints.

As the Smurfs huddle together to judge the two finished paintings, Brainy secretly hands Smurfette what appears to be Maestro's paints before he joins the huddle. Maestro is impatient for a decision, but soon Brainy emerges from the huddle to announce that Maestro is the winner. This makes the artist so happy and eager to use her as his eternal inspiration, but Brainy is not ready to let Maestro depart with Smurfette yet without his award. Thus, he takes the artist to the Smurf Theater where he purposely makes a very long and drawn-out speech in order to give time for Painter to work on his portrait of Maestro to trap him back into the painting. But eventually, Maestro's patience runs out, and not even waiting for Jokey to give him his "award" (one of his usual "surprises"), he goes behind the stage to find Smurfette only to see Painter working on a portrait of Maestro. He takes Painter's paints away and gives him his own paints, believing that Painter had swapped his paints with Maestro's (as he had attempted earlier). With Maestro's paints, Painter completes the portrait of Maestro, trapping the artist into the painting while freeing Papa Smurf from his painting.

Every Smurf is glad to have Papa Smurf back among them as he tells Painter that nothing beats the real thing. Vanity is still waiting for Painter to do his portrait, but Painter says that will have to wait, as they have a promise to keep. In Maestro's studio, Painter is finished working on a portrait of Smurfette, which she can see he will be happy with now that he has his eternal inspiration.
