Lazy Smurf (original French name Schtroumpf Paresseux) is one of the main characters of the Smurfs comic books, the 1980s Smurfs cartoon show, and the 2021 Smurfs cartoon show.

Character[]

He is a Smurf who usually wants nothing more but to sleep, which at times causes problems with his fellow Smurfs, though sometimes his habits can prove to be a valuable asset, as in the case in the episode "The Smurfstone Quest", where his echoed snoring protected his fellow Smurfs from being eaten by some underground creatures.

In the Hanna-Barbera cartoon show, he's a relatively quiet Smurf with a very soft voice, while in the 2021 TV series, he speaks with a low, dopier voice.

Personality[]

While known for being constantly sleepy, Lazy possesses other traits such as being understanding, friendly, loyal, and mostly mild-mannered. He is quite sympathetic, which is shown in "The Cuddly Toy", where he is guilty about taking Baby Smurf's teddy bear that gets stolen be a lizard and immediately tries to get it back.

He is prone to getting agitated when he lacks enough sleep or if he gets rudely awaken from a nap.

In "Never Smurf Off 'Til Tomorrow", after Lazy gets knocked out while attempting to secure the windmill during a hurricane, he and a group of Smurfs get stranded on a volcanic island when the windmill goes airborne. Handy and the others place the blame entirely on Lazy due to the fact they weren't present for his injury, assuming he carelessly fell asleep. When Handy builds a pedal-powered helicopter to escape the island, everyone pedals save for Lazy, who is given a passenger seat. However, when the aftershock of a volcanic eruption renders Handy unconscious, Lazy rushes to his seat in a feat of heroics and starts pedaling, flying the helicopter away from the volcano, only to crash-land in the middle of the ocean. Soon after, Smurfette notices Lazy's hat has an axle grease-covered bump on it along with Handy's, which proves that he hadn't fallen asleep on purpose and is indeed capable of working hard in the face of danger.

In "Paradise Smurfed", Lazy seems to imagine himself as more or so the leader of the trio present in his dream, trying to get Brainy to relax a little and accusing him and Greedy of goofing around and getting into trouble while he's trying to sleep. Similarly, in his dream in "Never Smurf Off 'Til Tomorrow", Lazy imagines himself as a known hero whose intelligence and quick-thinking saves the village from a monster. In the episode, "Lazy's Nightmare", Lazy is finally given the opportunity to be a real hero within the dream world, saving his fellow Smurfs from the evil Morphio.

Lazy appears to have strength in the 2021 cartoon show episode "The Majestic 5", unknowingly defeating Azrael with a stick due to him waking up.

Relationships With Others[]

Lazy is liked by most if not all the Smurfs, regardless of their gripes with his laziness. This is shown by episodes such as "Lazy's Slumber Party", when a bunch of Smurfs throw Lazy a slumber party and only wish for him to have fun, despite his frustration and continued struggle to sleep without one of them waking him up. However, in modern portrayals (especially in the 2021 TV series), the Smurfs show more tolerance and consideration for his laziness whilst allowing him to sleep anytime.

He is friends with Smurfs such as Smurfette and Clumsy, who is seen at his house getting ready before attempting to drag him to the Smurf Theatre in "The Golden Smurf Award".

Very Smurfy Non-canon warning: This article or section contains non-canonical information that is not considered to be an official part of the Smurfs Franco-Belgian comic book series, the 1980s Smurfs cartoon show series, or the 2021 Smurfs cartoon show series, and should not be considered part of the overall storyline of any of those media universes.

The Smurfs and The Smurfs 2[]

Lazy does not have any lines in The Smurfs and The Smurfs 2, though he can be seen in cameo appearances at the beginning of both films.

The Smurfs: The Legend Of Smurfy Hollow[]

Lazy has an appearance in The Smurfs: The Legend Of Smurfy Hollow as one of the contestants of the Smurfberry Hunt contest, although he admittedly collects only one smurfberry. By the end of the story, while Gutsy and Brainy argue over who should get the medal for winning the contest, the medal slips out of their hands and lands looped around Lazy's neck, and thus he was declared the official winner.

Smurfs: The Lost Village[]

Lazy does not have any lines in Smurfs: The Lost Village, though he appears sleeping outside of his house and also appears in the "I'm a Lady" scene at the end of the film.
