Farmer Smurf (original French name Schtroumpf Paysan) is one of the main characters of the Smurfs comic books, the 1980s Smurfs cartoon show (appearing until "The Smurfs That Time Forgot"), and the 2021 Smurfs cartoon show.

Character[]

It’s thanks to Farmer that Chef’s meals are so good. How delicious can a cake be if the ingredients aren’t the best? He’s in charge of growing and harvesting all the food the Smurfs eat, and he takes his job very seriously, always talking to his crops to help them grow. Pumpkin, you’re perfectly round! No matter whom he’s talking to, he does it in a fun, “farming flavored” language.

Farmer is also the go-to-guy if you have a question on plants and how to grow things.

Farmer has one other passion beyond his garden: snail racing. He has a stable of snails that he has raised and trained to become the best racers in the land. He can't understand why nobody else is as excited about his little purebreds as he is.

Farmer also owns a very practical tractor, which he uses to get around.

Farmer is identified by his green farmer's overalls, a plain straw hat, and brown shoes. He also frequently carries around a pitchfork.

In the early comics and Hanna-Barbera cartoon show, the only thing that visually separates Farmer from the other Smurfs is his tendency to carry around a hoe or another farming tool. While in Smurf merchandise starting from the early 80's such as "What Do Smurfs Do All Day?" and a series of piece puzzles by Milton Bradley, he started wearing either red, blue, or pink farmer's overalls, a plain straw, and plain brown/white shoes - which can be considered an early version of what would become his modern design, though he wouldn't get his new design until the 90's as he went through a transition to his modern design starting from the comic book adaptation of "The Clockwork Smurf" in which he would be initially seen wearing a straw hat that distinguishes him from the other Smurfs.

In the comic books, he has Harmony sing and play his off-key music in order to make it rain. His constant expression in the original French comics is "cre vingt schtroumpfs", which means "sacred twenty smurfs" (a play on "cre vingt dieux", or "sacred twenty gods").

In the 1981 cartoon show, Farmer has a New England accent and has a hillbilly accent in Smurfs: The Lost Village and the 2021 TV series.

Role in the Village[]

He is responsible for growing and harvesting much of the food that the Smurfs eat on a daily basis.

Farmer is often seen as the one to report danger or if a Smurf has gone missing.

In the 2021 TV series, outside of harvesting the food, he feeds and cares for his snails.

Personality[]

Farmer is a kind, gentle Smurf, though he is frequently revolted by the weather and the birds that circle around his plantations.

In the episode "Speak For Yourself, Farmer Smurf", Farmer longs for marriage and becomes self-conscious of his status as a country bumpkin, worrying over whether or not he could be loved by anyone (including Smurfette, who he wishes to marry for the duration of said episode).

In "Have You Smurfed Your Pet, Today?", instead of obsessing over Handy's string-a-ling fad with the other Smurfs, Farmer criticizes it due to the lack of help he was receiving in the fields. He tells Papa Smurf the fad has gone too far, which proves to be correct when Puppy continues to go without food.

He is very knowledgeable and skilled in his occupation, such as in the episode "The Great Slime Crop Failure", where the story very much implies Farmer is "the smartest [or greatest] farmer in the world". He tells the Smurflings about his belief there are "little good things" in vegetables (so tiny they cannot be seen) that make them healthy for you. Much like how Handy invents things centuries before humans can, this makes Farmer the first creature to theorize such a thing as vitamins and nutrients.

He is also knowledgeable of taking on large animals; in "The Snail Whisperer", when dealing with a snake, he orders his snails, that the snake has swallowed, to form shapes and are able to get spit out by the snake.

"Ogre Love" implies that he can go crazy when out in the heat too much, as when he is greeting Smurfette, he runs away at the sight of Bigmouth. Though she had not known that Bigmouth was behind her, she assumes "the sun had gotten to his head again".

Relationships with Others[]

Farmer doesn't seem to have a Smurf best friend, as he is often seen as a friend to plenty (if not all) of the Smurfs.

Smurfette[]

Farmer gets all tied up in a turnip when talking to Smurfette in "Speak For Yourself, Farmer Smurf". Feeling embarrassed of himself along with wanting to get married, Farmer keeps his identity secret and attempts to woo her by having Grouchy deliver a requested poem by Poet to her. He meets with her at The Great Oak, but not without wearing a mask (made by Handy) along with help from Vanity on how to act charming. Later, after getting captured by Bigmouth, Smurfette reveals to Farmer that she wishes she could've gotten to know him better and tells him about how she's in love with a secret admirer who wants her hand, yet she still feels she's too young to get married. After their escape, the two remain good friends and share a sweet moment on a log.

From this moment on, Smurfette and Farmer have been portrayed to be good friends. In "Who Nose?", she reveals to Hefty that she had already asked Farmer to plant the flower she was holding. In "Smurfy Day Care", he is seen with Smurfette, who is on his wheelbarrow, with Farmer happy to do things for her.

Farmer is also a part of her Smurf-Fu class in the titular episode, though he is kicked out after farting.

Gourdy[]

From Season 6's "Farmer's Genii" onwards, he has a genie named Gourdy, who he had found in his smurfmelon patch. Besides being constantly frustrated when Gourdy's magic goes wrong and wishing that he would stop helping his master, Farmer deeply cares about his genie.

Racing Snails[]

He has a special relationship with his racing snails, who are seen in the 2021 TV series. As Farmer describes, they are "his babies" and gets very worried when they go missing. He uses them in the annual snail race. This is a competition where snails go as fast as they can to win.

However, they have a falling out with each other in "The Snail Whisperer" where they are tired of their life and join Wild in mischief. When they are eaten and Wild is fearful, Farmer saves the day and defeats the snake. Later, they rejoice by sleeping in the forest.

Brainy Smurf[]

Like the other Smurfs, Farmer is often seen annoyed from Brainy's endless chattering. In "The Snail Whisperer", he kicks him away when he is talking, and in "Smurf-Fu", he says he can't blame the snake for attempting to eat Brainy for lecturing it.

Fisher Smurf[]

In the comic books, Farmer is the one who teases Fisher the most of all Smurfs. As he often wakes up very early, Farmer sees Fisher going past his fields every morning, which annoys Fisher.
