Characters[]

Synopsis[]

Sassette's paper dolls are brought to life by some magic paper they're made of.

Plot Summary[]

In the Smurf Village, Handy had just set up a net so that the Smurflings could play "smurfetball" together. Snappy asks Sassette if she wants to play "smurfetball", and Sassette answers that she would rather play with her Smurfy Lou doll, which makes the three boy Smurflings laugh at her, saying that her doll looks like it's ready to fall apart. Sassette snorts in disgust to their comments and decides to go elsewhere with her doll, kicking the smurfball so that it scores a basket and makes the other three Smurflings gasp in wonder. Meanwhile, Papa Smurf is busy in his laboratory working on a plant revitalization formula when he has an accident that spills a bit of formula on one of his formula sheets before it gets blown out the window.

Sassette is still playing with her Smurfy Lou doll when one of its arms break off, making her worry. She sees Tailor pass by and asks him if he could fix her doll, but he tells her that he's got so much work to do today. He looks back and sees the sad look on Sassette's face, wondering what she's going to do without her Smurfy Lou doll, and then offers to make her some cut-up dolls from paper she could play with while he takes Smurfy Lou with him to his clothing shop to work on fixing her later. Sassette tries her best to enjoy playing with her new cut-up paper dolls but tells them that they don't dance nearly as well as Smurfy Lou.

Then the young Smurfling comes across the piece of paper from Papa Smurf's laboratory that she thinks she could make better paper dolls from. Suddenly the paper dolls she makes from the piece of paper come to life and start giggling and dancing around Sassette, which amazes her even as she sees them run off and harass the other three Smurflings while they are busy playing "smurfetball". Sassette shows them that these paper dolls can do anything as they dance around while balancing themselves on a smurfball. Then Tailor comes into the Smurflings' playhouse to show Sassette that he has repaired Smurfy Lou, but Sassette hands the doll back to Tailor, saying he could keep the doll since her new paper dolls are much better. As Tailor walks out carrying Smurfy Lou, wondering what he's going to do with the doll, Sassette's new paper dolls slip out through the window and head toward the other houses in the village.

Meanwhile, Papa Smurf has just finished cleaning up his laboratory from the explosion that resulted from his experimentation when he noticed that the sheet containing the revitalization formula is gone. As he leaves his laboratory to go find where that sheet had gone off to, Sassette's paper dolls wreak havoc in the village, causing one of Handy's machines to dump a pile of logs onto a wheelbarrow that Lazy was sleeping in, flipping him out of the wheelbarrow and onto a big tray of smurfberry pudding that Clumsy was carrying for Greedy.

Papa Smurf soon finds the sheet of paper he is looking for, but sees that somebody was taken a pair of scissors to it, leaving what appears to be outlines of paper dolls from the leftover sheet. While he wonders who could have done this, his little Smurfs gather around him to report the trouble that the "little cut-ups" have created, such as one of Jokey's surprises being ruined. As Papa Smurf now wonders about the "little cut-ups", they are out in the forest at that moment going in circles around a ladder Gargamel is using to gather eggs from a nest so he could make a stinkweed omelet, making him fall off the ladder. Sassette manages to retrieve the paper dolls and head back to the village before Gargamel could get a hold of her or the dolls, leaving the evil wizard dizzy and angry at the Smurfs and their new toys.

Back in the village, Papa Smurf sees what Sassette has done to the sheet of paper and is amazed that his revitalization formula is more powerful than he thought. Sassette apologizes for what she and her paper dolls have done, but Papa Smurf consoles her by taking the dolls with him to his laboratory so that he could find a way to reverse the formula. However, the paper dolls do not stay put inside the drawer Papa Smurf puts them in and slip out through the door, returning to Sassette who is in her playhouse missing their presence. The paper dolls now want to play a new game with Sassette, and so they slip out through the window and go off into the forest, which is the last place Sassette wants to go with them.

Meanwhile, Gargamel is out in the forest with a new weapon that he intends to use against the Smurfs, one that fires a roll of sticky flypaper toward his victim which will easily catch a Smurf. Soon he hears the giggling of the magical paper dolls and sees that they have returned with Sassette chasing after them, saying Papa Smurf will be very upset. Gargamel then fires his flypaper weapon at them, capturing the paper dolls while Sassette escapes to tell Papa Smurf what has happened. Papa Smurf comes up with an idea of how to rescue the paper dolls, which requires a bit of help from Tailor.

Later on, in Gargamel's castle, the evil wizard has the paper dolls held prisoner under a glass jar while he sets up a trap for the Smurfs to capture them should they ever attempt to rescue their magical toys. However, Gargamel doesn't notice that the Smurfs have created more magical paper dolls, this time in the shape of Smurfs, until they enter his laboratory and start wreaking havoc by dumping vials of potions and books off the bookshelf. Gargamel chases the new paper dolls toward the door where his trap was set up and pounces toward them, only for the dolls to evade both the wizard and his cat as they leap right into the trap. Gargamel watches helplessly ranting as the Smurfs enter the laboratory to free the cut-up dolls from the glass jar just before they escape.

Back in the village, Sassette says goodbye to her magical paper dolls as Papa Smurf melds them back into the sheet of paper that they came from. She starts to miss their presence already, but fortunately Tailor gives her back Smurfy Lou to make her feel happy again. Snappy invites Sassette to play "smurfetball" with him and the other Smurflings, and though she initially refuses, she decides to do so when Snappy invites her to take Smurfy Lou along with her. But just as they are about to leave Papa Smurf's laboratory, Jokey shows up with a big cut-up paper doll as a prank to fool the other Smurfs. Papa Smurf sighs and says that this is the last that they will see of the cutups.

Trivia[]

  • This episode was adapted into a Smurfs comic book story that appeared in Schtroumpf magazine, though in that version the magical paper dolls were created for Baby Smurf. Also in that adaptation, Gargamel creates his own paper dolls to torment the Smurfs with.
  • This is the only episode in which Brainy is mentioned in an episode that does not feature him.
