Clockwork Smurf (original French name Schtroumpf Robot or Schtroumpf Mécanique) is a mechanical Smurf character that appeared in various episodes of the Smurfs cartoon show up until Season 8. He also appeared in the comic book version of "The Clockwork Smurf".

Cartoon Show Version

He was a Smurf created by Handy to do various jobs around the village (usually better than any Smurf can do them) when Brainy caused him to malfunction by messing around with his internal workings, forcing Handy to shut Clockwork down until he could repair him. However, Clockwork mysteriously came to life again and, being aware of himself, ran away from the village until he came across Prince Gerard, who was being held prisoner in his own castle by his aunt Imperia, who desired to have her nephew's rightful place on the throne of his kingdom. Clockwork helped Prince Gerard escape from his aunt's clutches and led him to the Smurf Village, where they offered him their help in retaking the kingdom from his aunt. After successfully deposing Imperia and being coronated as king, Gerard kept Clockwork as his personal advisor and friend.

Occasionally, Clockwork visited the village and helped the Smurfs wherever possible. Some years later, Handy built for Clockwork a female companion called Clockwork Smurfette, who initially only fell in love with her creator, but after helping Clockwork rescue his fellow Smurfs from Gargamel she turned her affections over to him. Although Handy gave him a voice box, he generally speaks in a way that makes him sound like Baby Beaker from Muppet Babies.

His character was voiced by Frank Welker.

Comic Book Version

He was a Smurf created by Handy to do various jobs in the village. In addition, he has a nozzle on the top part of his hat that can be used to dispense liquid, usually in the form of sarsaparilla soup that Clockwork is able to brew within himself by chewing a sarsaparilla leaf. Unlike the cartoon show version which was barely able to speak a word even through Handy's voice box upgrade, the comic book Clockwork Smurf was able to speak in Smurf language right from the start. However, in the story that introduced him, Gargamel got a hold of him and created a duplicate version of him that would dispense a potion that would mutate the Smurfs into various forms. The real Clockwork Smurf helped his creator return to the village to warn the other Smurfs about the fake Clockwork Smurf. As Papa Smurf took his little Smurfs to Gargamel's castle to deal with the wizard, the fake Clockwork Smurf returned to his master to warn him. Soon the two Clockwork Smurfs were dueling with each other using kitchen utensils while the Smurfs were contending with Gargamel, until the real Clockwork Smurf prevailed against his duplicate. He was able to dispense an antidote that would change the mutated Smurfs back to normal.

The comic book Clockwork Smurf was created as a stand-in for the Benco chocolate powder bottle which appeared in a multi-part story ad for the product which was created by Peyo.
