"Chlorhydris' Lost Love" is a Season 7 episode from the Smurfs cartoon show.

Plot Summary

The Smurfs are eagerly preparing to celebrate their version of Valentine's Day, namely Smurfy Friendship Day, except of course Grouchy Smurf, especially as the day involves Smurfs openly expressing their affection for one another by hugging, something he really hates. While they help Smurfette make valentines, Sassette tries to get Grouchy to admit that he really likes it, but his only response is, "I hate...to admit it". However, as he says it, he actually smiles (slightly) to himself as he views the string of paper Smurfs he has just made.

Meanwhile, at her observatory, Chlorhydris tells her pet toucan she hates the day because it is the anniversary of when she would have married Manfred the Magnificent, a wizard she loved since they had attended a school for sorcerers together, and for her had left his previous love Drusilla, a witch who happened to be her biggest rival there. But Manfred disappeared on their wedding day, breaking her heart, which is why she hates anything to do with love or happiness, including the Smurfs.

Looking through her giant telescope, she spies Cupid doing his rounds, and forming an evil plan in her mind, she follows him at a discreet distance. As he makes his way to the Smurf Village to celebrate Smurfy Friendship Day with the Smurfs, he stops to shoots his arrows of love at a buck and a doe but misses, and instead gets the Smurfling boys, who consequently fall in love with Sassette. At first, she is bemused and flattered at the sudden adulation the boys give her, but when it gets a bit excessive, and neither Papa nor Grandpa Smurf do anything about it, she ends up running into the forest to get away from them. She takes refuge in a strange cave in which she is amazed to find a life-sized statue of a man who looks like a wizard, but then she encounters a nasty witch and her two hungry pet eels from which she barely escapes alive, but not before hearing the witch say this statue was actually a man she had transformed because he had spurned her love.

Meanwhile, Cupid takes a break from his archery to take a dip in the river, during which Chlorhydris swaps his arrows of love for her arrows of hate which she has created. Unaware of the swap, Cupid afterwards shoots one of the cursed arrows when he arrives at Smurf Village, causing all of the Smurfs to hate, except for Papa Smurf, Grandpa, and Sassette, who are in Papa Smurf's home where she is telling the two elder Smurfs about her adventure in the cave, and Vanity Smurf, who is hiding from Cupid's arrows in the forest. As a result, these four Smurfs do not get affected.

Cupid and the unaffected Smurfs are surprised and shocked at the other Smurfs' behavior, even that of Grouchy, who is twice as grouchy as he's ever been. When they realize what has happened, Papa, Cupid, Sassette, and Vanity set out to get the love arrows back from Chlorhydris, leaving Grandpa to try keeping the hateful Smurfs from destroying the village with all their fighting.

When Papa, Cupid, Sassette, and Vanity arrive at Chlorhydris' castle, they try to retrieve Cupid's arrows, but are captured by the evil witch herself. Then Sassette sees Chlorhydris' portrait of her lost love Manfred, and recognizes him as the wizard turned to stone in the other witch's cave. When Chlorhydris hears Sassette talking about this, she realizes from the that the wizard is actually her beloved Manfred, which explains why he never arrived for their wedding, and that the witch in the cave is her rival Drusilla, who cast the spell in revenge on them both.

Chlorhydris frees Sassette and Vanity on the condition that they go back to Drusilla's cave with a magic pellet she gives them to revive Manfred, telling them if they fail, she will shoot Cupid and Papa Smurf with her hate arrows. In the cave they encounter Drusilla's eels, but as they are being pursued by the creatures, they accidentally succeed in restoring Manfred the Magnificent with the magic pellet. The eels are frightened off, but an enraged Drusilla herself returns and tries to turn Manfred and his rescuers all to stone. She corners Vanity, but as she tries to zap him, his hand mirror deflects her spell back on her, turning her to stone instead.

The Smurfs then lead Manfred to Chlorhydris, the former being so overjoyed to see his bride again, he isn't even turned off by how much she has aged and he hasn't, as a result of being preserved as a stone statue all these years. Chlorhydris herself is so happy she not only frees Papa Smurf and Cupid, but also returns the love arrows that Cupid uses to restore to the other Smurfs their ability to love, even Grouchy. Unfortunately, not everyone gets a happy ending, as Manfred accidentally sits on Chlorhydris' own hate arrows, turning his love for her into hatred instead, again leaving her alone and miserable.
