Chef Smurf (original French name Schtroumpf Cuisinier) is one of the main characters of the comic books and 2021 cartoon show.

Chef has a German accent in the 2011 Smurfs film. He reappears in the 2021 Smurfs cartoon show with an Italian accent.

Character

He's the master of the kitchen, the Smurf that everyone loves. There is nothing he cannot bake, roast, or prepare, although sometimes his choices are a bit experimental, like the time he made a cauliflower with rose hips dipped in lizard milk. The area in which he excels: pastries! He is unbeatable and keeps his recipes a secret!

In the 1980s cartoon show, his role was assigned to the 1980s cartoon show version of Greedy.

He is usually identified by a toque blanche (white chef's hat), and an apron and a baker's hat.

Personality

Chef is passionate about his work, enjoying making exquisite and refined foods, and at one point, he kicks Bigmouth for eating his food too fast without giving himself time to enjoy it. Chef also tends to get irritated or lose his temper often, usually as a result of someone stealing or destroying one of his many beloved desserts and meals. When he does, it is usually not for long or very extreme depending on the circumstance. He is a very sympathetic Smurf at times, shown in "Souffle Shuffle", where he feels bad for Greedy, who pretends to be sad that he is unable to help him make any of the foods to bring to the Spring Festival. Though Greedy was faking, it is clear that Chef can understand disappointment and sympathy.

Despite this, he tends to get violent such as using kitchen utensils as weapons or whacking a Smurf with a spoon (such as Grouchy in "Pop Out!" and an attempted swing at Dreamer in "Knight Smurfalot").

Chef seems to sometimes get jealous of other cooking, as he had led a crew to sabotage Lily's waffle stand because her waffles were doing better than his at the moment in "Waffle Wednesday".

He can be sensitive as well. In "Chef Soup", he leaves the village when Brainy criticizes his cooking. In "Smurfing Places", he appears disappointed when "Papa Smurf" (who switched bodies with Gargamel's) doesn't like his food and struggles not to spit it out.

Chef has a mischievous side. In "Brainy Gets Ghosted!". He is one of the Smurfs involved with pranking Brainy after he annoys him and Painter for controlling his food and in "The Yummyus Pie", he forcefully tries to make the succulents that he and Farmer were growing grow using one of Papa Smurf's potions, but they end up getting destroyed.

Relationships With Others

Chef doesn't seem to have a Smurf best friend, as he is often seen as a friend to plenty (if not all) of the Smurfs.

Greedy Smurf

In the comics and 2021 series, Chef is often chasing Greedy as he consistently steals something new made by him without permission.

In various episodes of the 2021 TV series, he is also Chef's frequent customer for the food that he serves as established in "Chef Soup". Despite his greediness for food, Greedy does show concern for Chef's plight such as being one of the Smurfs rescuing him from Bigmouth and helping him deliver his souffle for the Spring Festival in "Souffle Shuffle". In "Doctor Brainy & Mister Dumb", Chef asks Brainy how he can stop Greedy from itching from one of his dishes.

Papa Smurf

Papa Smurf has a friendly and caring relationship with Chef. In "Chef Soup", he unsuccessfully tries to stop Chef from quitting and leads a group of Smurfs to Bigmouth's house to save him from Bigmouth and Egghead.

Smurfette

Chef, like other Smurfs, is shown to like Smurfette. In "The Return Of The Smurfette", he is seen baking a cake that is Smurfette-shaped, and in "Kitchen Klutz", she convinces him to give Clumsy a chance at being his assistant chef for saving Chef's life.

Brainy Smurf

Chef is often seen arguing with Brainy. Brainy is the reason why Chef left the village in "Chef Soup", due to him criticizing his cooking and in The Smurfs: Mission Vileaf, Chef tells Brainy to go suck on egg.

However, Brainy seems to be the reason why some of Chef's meals taste delicious. In "Doctor Brainy & Mister Dumb", he asks Brainy about one of his dishes and how much of the ingredient it needs for it to be good.

Farmer Smurf

Chef and Farmer do not interact much, but Farmer is directly the reason why Chef is able to make food for the Smurfs. This is stated in the "Bathing Smurfs" comic book and also stated in the 2021 series episode "Poet Slam".

In "The Snail Whisperer", Chef fears that Farmer's snails have left for good to live with Wild, since the snails make the milk, while in "The Yummyus Pie", he gets help from Farmer to help his Yummyus grow.

Clumsy Smurf

Chef and Clumsy have interacted before, though it depends on whether or not it is positive. In "Kitchen Klutz", Clumsy saves Chef's life and Chef decides to appoint Clumsy as the new chef. Throughout the beginning of the episode, Chef is very patient as Clumsy is new to the food business and does his best to assign him simple job. They're partnership, however, becomes strained when Clumsy reveals that it was him who accidentally pushed the giant boulder and Chef does not want to see Clumsy in his kitchen anymore. They're on good terms after that as Clumsy's new dish, which he made when Chef got knocked out with a rolling pin, and Chef allows Clumsy to cook again.

In both "Adventures In Smurfsitting" and "You're Fired!", Chef gets mad at Clumsy and Dimwitty for ruining his cooking (and calls both of them "good-for-nothings", although this was likely out of sheer frustration). In "Waffle Wednesday", Clumsy is a part of Chef's plan to end Lily's waffle business.

Smurflily

Chef was once jealous of Lily in "Waffle Wednesday". However, Lily never held a grudge against Chef for taking her waffle truck and reveals to him that she used his recipe. When they start a new waffle-business together, Lily shows Chef that the Smurfs liked her waffles better because they had a heart shape. Chef takes the heart shape and smiles. The two are still on good terms after this.

Trivia

  • Chef threatened to leave the Smurfs' Village once in "Bathing Smurfs" because a Smurf, filling in for Farmer, who was on vacation at the time, did horribly with his gardening.
  • Chef was mistakenly called "Pastrycook Smurf" in the Random House English version of "The Aerosmurf".
  • Like the majority of the Smurfs, Chef seems to be good with animals. In "Lost Cat", he gives a hungry Azrael (who was staying in the village due to his broken paw at the time) some pie, in "Chef Soup", he feeds two birds and they like his cooking, and in "The Smurfs And The Bratty Kid", he unties a bunny's ears, seeing as it hurted the bunny.
  • He was one of the Smurfs (alongside Brainy) who were featured in the Benco animated commercial. His chef's hat is shown much differently, and his pants were yellow.
  • He has a secret stash of sarsaparilla candy. He mentioned this in "Smurfy Secrets".
