BreakfastAtGreedy's

Greedy Smurf's latest pancake recipe sure is as light as a feather!

One day in the Smurf Village, Greedy goes into his kitchen with Baby Smurf to prepare his special pancake breakfast for his fellow Smurfs. With the blue infant watching, Greedy gathers all the ingredients for his special light-as-a-feather pancake recipe, which includes feathers from a pillow donated by Lazy. After mixing all the ingredients together in a bowl, Greedy pours out about a hundred or so pancakes onto the griddle and then goes to get his special pancake spatula when he sees that the pancakes have floated off the griddle and are now floating in the air. He thinks that he may have used too many feathers, but nonetheless collected all the pancakes and stacked them on a serving plate, seeing that they are ready to be served.

At Gargamel's castle, the evil wizard was sound asleep when a pounding noise on his door awakens him. It is his dear old mother, who is paying him an unfriendly visit to scold her son for the failure he has made of his life: his failure in living in an old dump of a house, his failure in having a cat with fleas, and his failure in not ever catching the Smurfs, and the reason for the last one is that he gives up. She denounces Gargamel as a constant quitter, which she sees has always been one and always will be, before she leaves.

Gargamel is left wondering to himself how he will prove to his mother that he isn't a quitter when it comes to catching Smurfs when a man with a cart comes pulling up to his doorstep. Upon hearing the visitor's voice, Gargamel recognizes that it is the junk salesman coming to sell his worthless wares and decides to make it look like he isn't home. He tries to sneak out through a window, but the junk salesman catches him there. He tries to use a passage through the cellar to escape, but the junk salesman catches him as he exits from the cellar, eager to spend the whole day with his customer, which Gargamel despises the very thought.

Back in the village, the Smurfs are all gathered around the big dining table outside, demanding for Greedy to deliver the breakfast. Greedy arrives with a big serving plate of pancakes that just float right off into the air as he removes the lid. The Smurfs help themselves to the pancakes which they enjoy without ever having to put them on their plates, with Painter saying it is a shame that Papa Smurf is visiting Mother Nature because he is missing "a breakfast extraordinaire". However, the pancakes that the Smurfs have eaten are now causing them to be so light that they are rising up into the air, with Clumsy and Baby Smurf being the only ones still on the ground. Lazy arrives a little late for the breakfast and wonders if his fellow Smurfs are up, to which Clumsy answers that they are "way up". With the Smurfs not able to come back down, Clumsy tells Lazy that they need to help them get down.

Meanwhile, Gargamel is trying to get rid of his unwanted visitor selling his junk when he takes a telescope and sees that there are Smurfs floating in the sky. Eager to get his hands on the Smurfs, Gargamel climbs up onto the roof of his house and tries to net as many Smurfs as he can, but they are still out of his reach as they drift past him overhead. Frustrated that he couldn't catch a single Smurf, Gargamel just hangs his head and says it's no use, only to hear his mother's voice telling him again and again that he's a quitter. Eager to show his mother that he isn't a quitter, he goes to the junk salesman and says he will take all that he has, but when the junk salesman asks how much he's willing to pay for it, Gargamel has that he's only going to take what he has, not pay for it, as he gallops off with the salesman's donkey pulling the cart. Clumsy, Lazy, and Baby hitch a ride on the cart, saying that they will rescue the Smurfs even if it takes all day to do it... even if Lazy has to stay awake all day to do it. Gargamel gets off the cart and takes a pogo stick and uses it to chase after the Smurfs with Azrael trying to go at them with his claws until Gargamel unknowingly falls into muddy pond.

As the Smurfs floating in the air lament at their situation, wishing only for Papa Smurf to be here to deal with it, Gargamel is at the river using the junk salesman's boat, ladder, and fishing reel trying to fish for Smurfs in the air. The junk salesman catches up to Gargamel and swims out to wrest the evil wizard from the boat, shaking it so much that it's making Azrael feel sick. Meanwhile, Clumsy uses the salesman's ostrich feather fan as wings so he could fly down from the trees and save as many Smurfs as possible, but in his attempt the only thing he could do was fly right into Vanity's arms.

Gargamel's fishing line got a hold of Jokey's surprise present, which Jokey finally let's go of for the evil wizard to get a big bang out of when he opens it. However, Gargamel's next cast catches a hold of Clumsy by the pants, and the Smurfs in the air all cling together and try to keep the wizard from reeling in his catch. They soon lose their grip on Clumsy, and Gargamel thinks that he's got one now, but he doesn't see that the boat is now going over the waterfalls until it's too late. As Gargamel and the boat plummet to the bottom of the falls, Clumsy flies off the fishing reel until he lands on Lazy, unable to save the Smurfs but at least glad that he was saved.

As the Smurfs continue to float past Gargamel, he sits sulking in the water at the bottom of the falls, saying that he can't go on anymore. Then he hears his mother's voice again calling him a quitter, which spurs him on to borrow more of the salesman's junk in order to catch the floating Smurfs, like a unicycle with a very high seat and a lasso. Clumsy says he only wishes they could have eaten his pancakes, which Papa Smurf uses as a paperweight. This gives Clumsy an idea, and so the three Smurfs head back to the village, where Clumsy fries up his own recipe for pancakes which hurts his head as he tries to flip one over on the pan.

As Gargamel's chase after the floating Smurfs ends when his unicycle crashes into a tree, the Smurfs see Azrael perched on top of one of the trees, ready to pounce upon his prey when they come floating by. Brainy covers his eyes in fear, blaming Greedy for the pancakes and wishing to never see another pancake again. Then Lazy calls out through a megaphone each of the Smurfs as Clumsy uses a catapult to launch each of his pancakes in the air for his fellow Smurfs to eat. Greedy says to Brainy that he might as well enjoy his last meal, and so Brainy eats the pancake and soon drops to the ground, as do all the Smurfs when they eat of Clumsy's pancakes.

Gargamel sees the Smurfs dropping like rocks as he continues riding on his unicycle when his lasso loop snares something in the bushes, which he thinks are all the Smurfs ready to be captured. But as it turns out, it is only the junk salesman, who is very angry at Gargamel for stealing all his junk and threatens to make the evil wizard pay with every last penny he has. To add salt to the wounds of Gargamel's failure to catch the Smurfs, his mother shows up at the scene to show that he really is a quitter.

Trivia[]

  • This is the first episode where Papa Smurf is entirely absent, making every character in the series absent for at least one episode.
    • Hefty also doesn't appear in this episode.
  • Clumsy, Lazy, and Baby Smurf are the only Smurfs to not eat Greedy's pancakes.
  • This episode uses an element from the comic book story "The Flying Smurf", where a Smurf uses a lighter-than-air formula to make himself be able to fly but had to be brought down with a rope and made to swallow bricks until he was able to be heavy enough to stay on the ground.
  • Many foreign DVD releases carry the syndicated Smurfs Adventures repackaging of this episode, as opposed to the rest of the episodes, which were uncut, although this episode has also used the modified intro and credits for foreign markets.
    • The syndicated version cuts out an entire scene where Gargamel uses a pogo stick to go after the Smurfs.
