Belgium is a country in western Europe that is adjacent to France, Germany, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands, which is the home country of Peyo and the Culliford family, where the Smurfs had originated. It is also presumably the country where the Smurf Forest, in which hides the Smurf Village, is located, since in the 2011 Smurfs movie Peyo had first documented the Smurfs as being a local historical legend similar to leprechauns.

The still-ongoing language war between the French and Dutch residents of Belgium was the inspiration for a Smurf story originally called Schtroumpf Vert et Vert Schtroumpf ("Smurf Versus Smurf"), which in the English translation became "Smurf Of One And Smurf A Dozen Of The Other", where the Smurfs were divided over the proper use of the word "smurf" in compounded words and phrases -- a situation that also appeared in the 1980s cartoon special "The Smurfic Games".

Belvision Studios, the animation company that was responsible for the movie "The Smurfs And The Magic Flute", was located in Belgium.

The Belgian Comic Strip Center, a museum that features various works of Franco-Belgian comic strips, including the Smurfs, is located in Belgium.

A special commemorative Smurf euro coin was minted in Belgium.

A UNICEF advertisement featuring the Smurfs was produced in a fund-raising campaign by UNICEF's Belgian arm to raise money for the rehabilitation of former child soldiers in Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo—both former Belgian colonies.
