Not to be confused with the shapeshifting star of the same name, Barbapapa is a human character who appears in two of the Smurfs comic book stories. A lookalike cousin of Gargamel's (except for a mustache), he first meets the Smurfs in the one story "The Smurf Vacation", as they enjoy a day of relaxation and recreation on the beach where he makes his living as a vendor of confectionaries.

Prior to encountering them, he received a letter from Gargamel asking that if he should ever meet with the Smurfs, to capture them and then send word so that his cousin can collect them. He pays no mind to Gargamel's request, until one Smurf refuses to pay for a lollipop he has received from the human. Barbapapa retaliates by trapping the little people inside a bunch of old wooden hives converted into Smurf-sized changing rooms, then arranges for his cousin to come and collect them as soon as possible. But during the rest of the afternoon, while Barbapapa sleeps on the beach, they manage to escape with Papa Smurf leaving behind a crab inside one of the miniature changing rooms as a "present" for Gargamel. After nightfall, when an eager Gargamel arrives to get the Smurfs, only to have his fingers pinched by the crab that he finds instead, he furiously chases after his cousin with a broom, Barbapapa swearing vengeance.

In the other story involving Barbapapa, "Smurf Surfing", the Smurfs return to the beach for a day of surfing with their new surfboards. When Barbapapa becomes aware of their presence, he sets out to get his revenge first by capturing Sassette Smurfling, then with Gargamel's connivance, disguising himself as an old man with the intent of selling the other Smurfs ice cream cones laced with sleeping powder. However, Sassette escapes and alerts the other Smurfs to Barbapapa's scheme. They quickly unmask Barbapapa, fall him to the ground, bury him up to his neck in sand, and force feed him one of his own ice cream cones. Then after dealing with Gargamel by scaring him away with a fake shark fin, the Smurfs spend the rest of their day on the beach playing golf...using Barbapapa's head as a driving range target!
