Characters[]

Synopsis[]

Poachers capture Baby thinking that he's a leprechaun.

Plot Summary[]

It is a peaceful quiet day out in the Smurf Forest, a day that for a group of rabbits is suddenly interrupted by the sound of a drum thumping and two hooded individuals walking through the forest. The rabbits suddenly flee for their lives, but one of them ends up caught in a trap that's been set up. The two hooded men look what the trap has caught, with the smaller one saying that it's their first catch of the season and the bigger one saying that it's not their last.

Meanwhile, in the Smurf Village, Tailor is showing Baby Smurf a new toy he has made for the infant, a ball attached by string to a handle where the object is to get the ball into the cup. Tailor says it's so simple even Clumsy can do it, which makes Baby Smurf so eager to give it a try himself. But then their attention is diverted to the same rhythmic thumping heard earlier out in the forest, which makes Tailor wonder what's making it. Brainy tries to explain that it's the sound of thunder, but Tailor tells him that the sun is still up in the sky. This gets Brainy and Tailor so caught up in an argument with each other that neither them nor any other Smurf notice that Baby Smurf has slipped out of his highchair and started to wander off. He soon finds a baby rabbit to play with, but Baby Smurf leaps onto the rabbit’s back to hop away into the forest, when both of them hear the drums, leaving behind Baby’s new toy.

As several of the Smurfs in the village search frantically for Baby Smurf, he finds himself in a rabbit hole where the baby rabbit's parents seem to scold him for bringing the child into their home. The mother rabbit goes to bring Baby Smurf back to his home, but instead gets caught in another trap. The two hooded individuals seen earlier now examine their new catch, with the smaller one saying that they have caught a mother rabbit and its baby. The bigger hooded man sees Baby Smurf and says that they have caught a leprechaun, and with it they may even find a pot of gold. The baby rabbit who witnessed this cried.

Soon, Papa Smurf gets word that Baby Smurf is missing and gets the whole village behind searching for him. In their search, Tailor finds the toy that he gave to Baby Smurf, and Papa Smurf finds a baby rabbit who looks sad and tearful. From the rabbit's descriptions, Papa Smurf ascertains that Baby Smurf and the rabbit’s mother have been caught by poachers and that the thumping sound is the drum that poachers use to scare rabbits into their traps. Papa Smurf tells his little Smurfs that they must rescue Baby Smurf, and so they follow the baby rabbit into the forest.

Meanwhile, inside a horse-drawn wagon, as the poachers prepare to make a rabbit stew, the big-hooded poacher takes Baby Smurf and demands him to tell where the leprechaun's pot of gold is. Baby Smurf only responds with baby talk, which the small-hooded poacher recognizes what the "leprechaun" is speaking in, but the big-hooded poacher insists that he's talking in leprechaun-ese, saying that wild horses couldn't get the information out of him. He places Baby Smurf in a cage and tells his partner that they should go and check the other traps. As Baby Smurf is left alone in the poachers' wagon, their pet cat climbs up on the table licking his chops as he eyes the little Smurf.

Papa Smurf tells Greedy and Clumsy to take the baby rabbit back to the warren while the rest of the Smurfs are going back to the village and prepare for a fight if the furriers will not give up Baby Smurf. Papa Smurf goes off by himself to the furriers' camp when he gets caught in one of their traps. Back in the village, the Smurfs mobilize themselves into action by mass-producing a cartload of smurfberry pies while getting Handy's catapult ready for action. Smurfette feels so upset that Baby Smurf has been kidnapped, but Handy tells her that every Smurf feels the same way. Soon with a group of Smurfs armed with halberds leading the front of the battle convoy, they head off into the forest.

The furriers’ cat, still intent on devouring Baby Smurf, pushes his cage off the table, breaking the cage door open, allowing Baby Smurf to exit the cage, but the cat goes after him. The mother rabbit who sees this, chews on the wood cage. The furriers themselves see that one of their traps hasn't caught anything in it. The smaller furrier thinks that it's other poachers, but the bigger one silences him, saying that they're the poachers and that it's a good thing they caught the blue "leprechaun" because they don't have enough fur to outfit an elf. The smaller furrier says that they still have three traps to check, so the big furrier tells his companion to check those traps while he sees to his "little pot of gold".

As the blue-hooded furrier bangs on the drum rapidly to scare the rabbits into the traps, a squirrel is furiously trying to chew his way through the rope of the trap Papa Smurf is caught in. But soon, the blue-hooded furrier sees Papa Smurf in the trap and thinks that he's caught another "leprechaun", albeit one that looks old and run-down. He says that the master will be pleased in that he will now have two pots of gold, but then decides against bringing that one in, feeling that his master shouldn't have all the gold, and then walks off choosing to bring the other "leprechaun" in later -- only to soon be caught in one of his own traps. The squirrel then returns to free Papa Smurf from the trap, and the village leader barely has time to thank his rescuer before he goes off to rescue Baby Smurf.

Meanwhile, inside the furriers' wagon, Baby Smurf has managed to escape the cat by hiding himself behind some furniture, but soon the cat spots him and is ready to pounce on him when the mother rabbit, who was chewing on the cage, escapes from captivity and keeps the cat from attacking Baby Smurf. The cat chases after the rabbit instead, giving Baby Smurf enough time to climb on top of the table and dump a bowl right onto the cat's head before he frees the other rabbit from his cage.

Out in the forest, the blue-hooded furrier watches as a convoy of little blue "leprechauns" passes under him, making him say that there couldn't be that many pots of gold in the forest. The bigger furrier is hearing the sound of fast pounding and wonders where it's coming from, and through a bush he sees that a group of rabbits have gathered around his camp. Behind him, the Smurfs appear as a battle convoy, with Papa Smurf warning the furrier to release the mother rabbit and Baby Smurf or else he will face the consequences. The bigger furrier just sees that he has a lot of "leprechauns" to capture, not finding himself the least bit threatened by them. Soon, as Smurfette flies overhead on Feathers, the rabbits in the wagon escape through the roof with Baby Smurf. The Smurfs outside the wagon see the cat chasing after the rabbits and fire the catapult full of pies at the cat, knocking him down. The bigger furrier grabs Baby Smurf and says he will get those "leprechauns" when the next volley of pies knocks Baby out of his hand, to be rescued by Smurfette as Feathers swoops down.

The blue-hooded furrier, who was freed beforehand, soon joins his master and gets on the wagon, summoning the horse to gallop so that they could ride quickly out of the forest. However, some Smurfs have sneaked their way onto the wagon and worked to decouple the horses from the wagon, so at the next turn, the horses rode off in a different direction while the furriers in their wagon rode straight into the lake.

With the Smurfs safely back in their village, Brainy apologizes to Papa Smurf for himself and his fellow Smurfs not paying any attention to Baby Smurf, with Tailor saying they'll be more careful next time. Papa Smurf says that at the very least Baby Smurf is home safe and sound. Smurfette wonders if they'll ever see the poachers, and Papa Smurf says he doubts they'll see them for a long time. But then they hear the same rhythmic pounding that sounds like the poachers' drum, and so the Smurfs go to see if the poachers have returned. As it turns out, it was only Baby Smurf having fun pounding away on a drum.
