Baby'sNewToy

The Toymaker is pleased to see that Baby Smurf has found a toy that he wants to play with.

In the Smurf Village, a group of Smurfs have gathered around Baby Smurf with Snappy trying to entertain him with his toy puppet. But apparently the toy puppet fails to entertain the young Smurf, and Jokey fails to do the same when he opens up his "surprise" only to reveal that he has a clean diaper. In fact, none of Baby Smurf's toys are holding his interest anymore, which makes Brainy suggests that what the infant needs is a new exciting toy. Handy confesses that for once Brainy is right, and so the Smurfs rush out the door to try finding a new toy for Baby.

Meanwhile, Grouchy and Sassette bring Baby to Papa Smurf to find out what's wrong with him. Grandpa Smurf tries to entertain Baby Smurf by pulling a toy rabbit out of his beard, but Baby just watches it with disinterest. None of the toys that Grandpa has pulled out of his beard catch Baby's interest. Sassette and Grandpa are wondering what else they can do for Baby now, but Papa Smurf assures them that his other little Smurfs will come up with a solution. Handy shows them a toy merry-go-round that he hopes will make Baby Smurf happy, but all Papa Smurf sees is that there is a line of adult Smurfs who want to take a ride on the merry-go-round.

Snappy shows Baby a pet frog that he could have for his very own, while Brainy presents him with a talking Brainy-in-the-box that just makes Baby cry and scares away the frog. After several more attempts, the Smurfs realize that toymaking just isn't very fun if Baby isn't responding to them at all. Grandpa calms down the crying Baby Smurf by saying that he has an idea: they will simply have to visit the Toymaker, a being who makes toys for children all over the world.

The Smurfs go out into the forest and find the Toymaker's house, a place that Papa Smurf hasn't seen in over 500 years. Handy pulls the cord near the front door, but instead of sounding off a door chime, it causes the door to open and a pair of toy soldiers to march out and announce the owner's coming. Soon the Toymaker greets the Smurfs, saying it's been 100 years since he last saw a Smurf, though Grandpa corrects by saying it's been 500 years.

The Toymaker allows the Smurfs entry into his house, and they are astounded to see the number of toys that are in his workshop. Brainy tries to offer the Toymaker his Brainy-in-a-box for his collection, but the Toymaker refuses to accept, saying that he already has enough firewood. Snappy asks the Toymaker if they could look around, and the Toymaker says it doesn't matter what they do. This makes Papa and Grandpa Smurf suspect something is wrong with the Toymaker, and as they go into one of the rooms in his workshop to investigate, they see that it's so dusty, like it hasn't been used in over 500 years. The Toymaker says he hasn't used the room since he stopped making toys, saying it's no fun to make toys when children will just go ahead and break them, and that all he ever hears about is complaints. Papa Smurf tells the Toymaker that he is sure to change his mind once he sees how happy Baby Smurf will be with a new toy. The Toymaker just sighs and says this will be why he will never make a new toy.

Meanwhile, the other Smurfs are having fun trying out the Toymaker's toys. Snappy and Sassette are bouncing around using pogo sticks, Handy is examining the Toymaker's toymaking machine and wondering how it works, Jokey plays around with the Toymaker's own jack-in-the-box with himself as the jack, and Clumsy is trying to get himself under control while walking around with a pair of roller-skates. However, Clumsy bumps Jokey into a cannon that shoots him across the room and knocks Snappy and Sassette off their pogo sticks, landing onto the conveyor belt as the toymaking machine starts. Handy and Brainy try to get the Smurfs off the conveyor belt before they get sucked into the machine, but they too end up on the conveyor belt and come out the other end made up as new toys.

Back in the other room, Papa and Grandpa Smurf try in their attempts to get Baby Smurf interested in the Toymaker's toys to show that the Toymaker needs to make a new toy, but the Toymaker sees from Baby's reactions that the Smurfs are better off going away and leaving him alone. However, they soon hear Baby laughing as he has found a toy that caught his interest: an old stuffed bear that the Toymaker hasn't seen in years. Seeing Baby being happy with a toy that the Toymaker has considered special is now filling his heart with a joy that he hasn't felt in ages. But the Toymaker's newfound joy is cut short when Grandpa Smurf notices smoke coming from the next room. They enter and see that the other Smurfs have gotten into the Toymaker's toymaking machine and may have accidentally caused a fire. As Papa and Grandpa Smurf try to rescue the Smurfs-turned-toys from the fire, one of the toy soldiers almost falls on the three elders, but Baby Smurf uses his magic powers to cause it to fall away from them.

The Toymaker says they need to get the fire away from the machine, or else it will be destroyed, and Papa Smurf's little Smurfs will remain toys forever. Papa Smurf has an idea, and so with the toy soldiers he forms a bucket brigade that will help put out the fire. After that was accomplished, the Toymaker runs the Smurfs through the toymaking machine in reverse, and soon they come out the other end as real Smurfs again. Clumsy is glad to see that Baby Smurf is now happy with a new toy, and the Toymaker realizes that the only way he can find true happiness is to keep making toys for children who will be happy.

Although Baby Smurf is not allowed to keep the toy bear, the Toymaker has sent the Smurfs along with a bunch of new toys that will keep the young infant interested. However, back in the village, as they unwrap the packaging for the new toys, Snappy sees that Baby is more interested in playing with the wrapping than with the toys themselves. Papa Smurf tells Snappy that sometimes the simplest pleasures are the best.
