"Azrael's Brain" is a Season 7 episode from the Smurfs cartoon show.

Characters[]

Synopsis[]

Azrael is affected by Gargamel's brain boosting formula and becomes incredibly smart.

Plot Summary[]

In Gargamel's castle, the evil wizard scolds his cat Azrael for his constant failure in catching Smurfs, saying that he could teach a mouse to catch Smurfs. Azrael razzes his master, which only earns him a catapult out the window. Scruple tells Gargamel that it isn't Azrael's fault, that the true reason his master can't catch Smurfs is that they're smarter than he is, and that Scruple's mop has more brains than his master. Then Gargamel realizes that the reason the Smurfs are smarter than he is because there are a hundred of them, so he believes that if he can make himself a hundred times smarter, he could outwit the Smurfs. Despite Scruple saying that it isn't the scales that are unbalanced, Gargamel goes to his bookshelf and looks through one of his spell books until he comes across a brain boosting formula that would make him a hundred times smarter. Scruple scoffs at the idea, saying a hundred times zero is still zero.

Meanwhile, in the Smurf Village, the Smurfs are trying to get themselves ready for the big storm while Brainy tries to wax eloquently with Papa Smurf as he closes up a window. Brainy tells him that he's going to write a new book called Brainy The Brain and tries to describe what it's going to contain when a magic bolt strikes him, causing him to reappear inside a pot.

Back in Gargamel's castle, the evil wizard has finished completing his brain boosting formula, saying it will turn him into the greatest evil genius of all time, though Scruple points out that it will only last for 24 hours. But just as the formula is starting to have its effect, there is a pounding on the boarded-up windows as Azrael is trying to get himself inside. Suddenly the boards break, knocking over Gargamel and Scruple. The young apprentice turns to see that the brain boosting formula has been dumped on Azrael, causing his eyes to glow. The cat then points a paw toward the window, and suddenly the boards seal themselves up back over it. As Scruple wonders what Gargamel has put into the potion, Azrael now causes a piece of paper and an inkwell to come out of a cupboard and uses them to write a message that he gives to his master, saying "from now on, you can call me your Magnificence". Gargamel thinks that his cat has become insolvent and picks up a broom to teach him a lesson, but Azrael with his new super brain power mentally causes the broom to chase Gargamel and Scruple, causing them to hide under a bed in fear.

Azrael laughs out the Smurf song while he uses another piece of paper to show Gargamel something that he has just come up with: a Smurf catching machine. Gargamel thinks that the idea is brilliant and sees that his cat is now a genius thanks to his brain boosting formula, but as Scruple says that he wants to see Azrael try to build it, the cat makes tools come out of a chest and hands them over to Scruple, indicating that he's the one who's going to build the machine. Scruple objects to this, only to be swatted in the butt by a saw that Azrael controls with his paw, making him change his mind. Gargamel is pleased with how his cat is taking charge of deciding who gets to build the machine, saying why should the creator do all the work when he can get someone "dumber" than him to do it, and then Azrael has the tools handed over to Gargamel, suggesting that he's going to be the builder.

Eventually, the Smurf catching machine is complete, and as Azrael operates the controls and gets it ready for action, Scruple stretches and yawns, saying that now it is time to get some sleep. Gargamel tells his young apprentice how he could think of sleep when they have Smurfs to catch. Then Azrael gives his master another plan for something to build: a giant mouse trap, according to what Scruple could see. Gargamel tells Azrael that he thought they were going to catch Smurfs, and Azrael replies in cat talk that they are as he gets the Smurf catching machine in motion and goes off into the forest without either of the humans. Gargamel growls as he falls to the ground that he hates his rotten cat just as much as he hates the rotten Smurfs.

Near the village, the Smurfs are enjoying a game of Smurf volleyball as Hefty performs a serve over the net that Papa Smurf tries to intercept when Clumsy runs into Papa Smurf, knocking him over and causing the ball to bounce off into the forest. As Clumsy and Papa Smurf head off into the forest to look for the smurfball, Azrael feels it bouncing off his head, which makes him realize that there are Smurfs nearby and so hides his Smurf-catching machine behind a bush to wait for the Smurfs to come passing by. Clumsy finds the smurfball near the bush, but then he sees it being swallowed up by a "funny-looking snake". Papa Smurf comes by close to investigate the "snake", and he gets swallowed up by it. Clumsy sees Azrael drive the Smurf-catching machine out from the bush, revealing that the "snake" is part of the machine that has captured Papa Smurf, and starts to make a run for it. Hefty and Slouchy see Azrael catching a few more Smurfs with the machine as they safely reach cover and then wonder what has gotten into Azrael.

Meanwhile, inside the village, Brainy is entertaining his fellow Smurfs by reading an excerpt from his book when Hefty comes calling to sound the alarm because Azrael has captured Papa Smurf. Brainy tells his fellow Smurfs that there's no need to fear as he would take them into the forest to rescue the captured Smurfs when he walks into a tree that he doesn't bother looking out for, making Slouchy mock his "heroism".

In Gargamel's castle, as the evil wizard and his apprentice are busy with the final preparations for the trap Azrael wanted them to build, Gargamel believes that the brain boosting formula is starting to wear off because what they're building is starting to make no sense at all, to which Scruple agrees. Gargamel turns to his captive Smurfs and thinks about having a Smurf snack, but Azrael sees what his master is about to do and causes a ruler to smack him in the butt. Gargamel and Scruple fearfully back away from Azrael until they are forced into the cellar that the cat opens the hatch to.

Soon, the group of Smurfs reach the window to the castle, from where they see that Gargamel and Scruple are nowhere to be found inside and that Azrael is asleep. They begin to wonder what they're going to do, but with Brainy being way too cautious to come up with a suitable plan, Hefty decides to take charge and leads the other Smurfs inside while Brainy chooses to hide himself. They find the glass cage that the other Smurfs are held in and see a key lying just outside it for them to pick up. Papa Smurf tries to warn them not to pick up the key, but it is too late: the key then triggers another cage to fall upon the Smurfs, and Azrael wakes up to find that he now has a few more captives. Brainy, in the meantime, sees all this happening while standing on top of a stack of pans and realizes that he needs to get help, but he can't get Papa Smurf's help because he's already captured.

Gargamel and Scruple peek out from under the cellar to see that Azrael has succeeded once again with a brilliant plan for catching Smurfs. The evil wizard comes out to congratulate his cat, saying that tonight they're going "to eat good", but Azrael responds in a way that tells his master that he alone will be doing the eating. Suddenly, a pan falls from the rafters, and Gargamel sees that Brainy is trying to hide himself from being capture. Azrael uses his magic brain power to try drawing Brainy into his mouth, and Brainy holds onto one of the pans for dear life until the nail in the rafters comes loose, causing the pans to fall on top of the terrible trio.

Hefty congratulates Brainy for being able to evade capture as he picks up the key to unlock both cages. But there is no time for them to give Brainy a pat on the back when they see Azrael coming out of his daze and decide to make a run for it. Azrael tries to use his paw to keep the Smurfs from escaping, but this time nothing happens. Scruple sees that the brain boosting formula has finally worn off, which gives Gargamel an excuse to chase his cat around with a broom, saying that Azrael had better hope that cats have nine lives because he's going to need every one of them.

Trivia[]

  • Smurfette does not appear in this episode.
  • Gargamel claims there are 100 Smurfs, just like in the original comics, but as Grandpa Smurf, Baby Smurf, Sassette, and Wild are introduced in this season and earlier, Gargamel is likely false.
