Synopsis

Gargamel uses various types of traps to capture the Smurfs and make gold while the Smurfs start thinking that Papa Smurf is losing his powers.

Plot Summary

As the story begins, Gargamel has Smurfette in his grasp, cursing her as he has created her to help destroy the Smurfs. Then he shows her that Papa Smurf can no longer help her, saying that he has stolen the village leader's powers. This makes Smurfette very fearful as Gargamel cackles with unbridled glee at seeing his prey so helpless. Soon she finds herself in her own bed in the Smurf Village, revealing that the whole thing was a nightmare she had. Fearing for Papa Smurf, Smurfette decides to check upon him the first thing in the morning.

On her way to Papa Smurf's house, Smurfette runs into Greedy, who offers her a chocolate smurf puff, which she refuses. Then Brainy comes along to reprimand Greedy for his constant eating, telling Smurfette that Papa Smurf has been busy in his laboratory. She leaves Brainy to his elucidations and sees the village leader through his window working on his experiments. One of them, adding a few drops of lemon onto some tomato plants, cause the tomatoes to spring off their vines and splatter Papa Smurf's feet. Another experiment, where he adds the drops into a cauldron, causes an explosion in the laboratory. Smurfette rushes in to see if Papa Smurf is all right, but he assures her that he is fine and that there's nothing to worry about.

In Gargamel's castle, the evil wizard is excited to find a spell that can turn metal into gold. However, as he reads through the list of ingredients for the spell, Gargamel is disappointed to find out that it requires half a pound of Smurfs, which to his reckoning means he needs ten Smurfs. As he slams the spell book shut on Azrael's tail, Gargamel seems determined to get them. Back in the village, Smurfette watches as Papa Smurf applies a formula unto Farmer's pumpkins, which causes them to grow until they explode, waking up Lazy who was sleeping nearby. As Papa Smurf wonders what is wrong with his fast-growing formula, Smurfette fears that Papa Smurf is losing his powers, which makes Jokey also wonder. Meanwhile, Lazy is looking for another quiet place to sleep when he sees a hammock strung up nearby. He jumps into it, only for the hammock to trap him before Gargamel grabs Lazy and puts him in sack, saying that he now has one Smurf and nine more to go.

Gargamel

Smurfette is sharing her opinions about what she saw of Papa Smurf with her fellow Smurfs, saying that she fears her dream is coming true. Vanity suggests that Papa Smurf may be losing his touch by getting old. Smurfette refutes this idea, saying that Papa Smurf just had his 542nd birthday, to which Handy says that that is not old. Out in the forest, Greedy is eating berries from a vine, saying that they will make a delicious cake, when his attention is diverted to a giant cake waiting out in the open. Upon touching it, Greedy finds out that it's made of glue, and from inside it Gargamel emerges to grab him. Then Jokey comes across a present in the forest that he says is "smurfier than mine" which he opens, only to find a hand coming out to grab him.

After the Smurfs see another of Papa Smurf's experiments fail, causing vegetables to fly out the window as weapons, the village leader decides that he needs to travel to the Mountain of Mists to gather some special roots and tells his little Smurfs where he's going. Smurfette warns Papa Smurf not to go, but he assures Smurfette that he will return by nightfall. However, her insistence makes him wonder if there's something wrong. She suggests that he might need a rest, but all Papa Smurf could say to that is nonsense. He tells his little Smurfs to be good while he's gone. Meanwhile, in Gargamel's castle, the evil wizard is weighing his captured Smurfs, and finding out that he only has a mere three ounces of them, he pounds the table in frustration, saying that he needs to get more Smurfs and fast. Greedy tries to reassure his fellow Smurfs that Papa Smurf will save them, but then Jokey says Smurfette told him that Papa Smurf was losing his powers. This inspires Gargamel with a brilliant plan to capture more Smurfs.

Out in the forest, Brainy finds a note pinned to a tree, saying it's for "smurf eyes only". After briefly reading it, he takes it to the village and shows it to his fellow Smurfs, reading what it says: "Under the Red Oak, this note says: I send bad news with no regrets. Four Smurfs must come once every hour, or Papa Smurf will lose all power." This makes Smurfette say that her fears are being confirmed with what she and her fellow Smurfs have witnessed with the failed experiments. The rest of them squabble over what to do when Hefty silences them, saying that the only thing they can do is go to the Red Oak, and so the Smurfs head off into the forest. As they reach the location, they first hide under a bush to check for anything suspicious and then, seeing nothing, some Smurfs approach the tree. But then Smurfette sees a net swooping down from the tree and dives out of the way before she is captured. Gargamel looks into his net and sees that he may now have a half pound of Smurfs, so he heads back home, offering to give Azrael a leftover Smurf to eat if there is one. Smurfette and Clumsy, who have escaped capture and have hidden in the bushes, now see that they need to go find Papa Smurf.

In Gargamel's castle, the evil wizard puts his latest captives into the pot, saying that by the first rays of dawn, he will turn the Smurfs into gold. Hefty says that he would like to give Gargamel a half pound right in the nose. Jokey only hopes that Papa Smurf would show up in time, but Hefty tells Jokey not to count on it and that they'd better find a way out on their own. As for Smurfette and Clumsy, they now travel the path toward the Mountain of Mists to find Papa Smurf when they realize that they are lost. They shiver in fear as they hear somebody is coming. Fortunately, it turns out to be Papa Smurf, which makes the two Smurfs relieved to find him. Smurfette tells the village leader that Gargamel has captured a net full of Smurfs, with Clumsy saying that the wizard is going to turn them into gold. Papa Smurf has a plan, and soon back in his laboratory he gives Smurfette a slight haircut as he snips some locks from her hair in order to make gold for Gargamel.

Meanwhile, the evil wizard is checking the Smurfs in his pot, wondering which of them will dissolve first as he is being turned into gold, when he gets hit in the head by a flying coin. He looks at the coin and realizes that it must be gold. Then another gold coin flies in through the window, and as Gargamel opens the door he finds a trail of gold coins waiting outside his castle. As he goes outside to follow the trail of gold, Papa Smurf sneaks in to rescue his little Smurfs, but finds himself contending with Azrael. He lures the cat toward the pot where the Smurfs were stewing and causes him to knock it over, losing the captured Smurfs that were in it. As Papa Smurf and his little Smurfs escape with Azrael on their tails, Gargamel reaches a mountain of gold coins, only to find himself captured in a net. Gargamel tells Azrael not to let the Smurfs he's chasing get away, but soon he gets captured in a net as well. The wizard curses the Smurfs, saying someday he will get his hands on them and make them pay. All Smurfette can say to Gargamel is that he says the sweetest things, which makes the other Smurfs laugh.

Back in the village, Papa Smurf shows his little Smurfs that he hasn't lost his powers as he causes a patch of pumpkins to grow really big with his formula, saying that it takes a lot of work and many failures for an experiment to finally succeed. As the other Smurfs cheer, Smurfette kisses Papa Smurf on the cheek, wondering how she could ever doubt him, while Brainy says he never believed for a minute that Papa Smurf was losing his powers... though that just earned him a flight out of the village! Back in the forest, Gargamel is at least happy with the thought that he will be rich when he gets out of the net... until the rain comes and melts the mountain of gold coins into a puddle, revealing to him that it was all Papa Smurf's handiwork. When he and Azrael were finally released from their nets, Gargamel says that he will get the Smurfs for this, and he will get them all.

Trivia

  • The title of the episode comes from the phrase "all that glitters is not gold", which is a variant of "all that glisters is not gold" from William Shakespeare's The Merchant Of Venice.
  • The episode notably uses elements from the comic book stories "The Smurfnapper" and "Smurf Traps".
    • Also, the similar traps Gargamel used to trap Jokey, Brainy, and Greedy were also reappeared in the Sega CD intro of the Smurfs 1994 video game, though Jokey instead got punched by the trap giftbox instead.
  • In the episodes following this one, it is established that Gargamel would need six Smurfs to complete his gold-making formula. In the comic book story "The Smurfnapper", all Gargamel needed for the formula was a single Smurf.
  • This being the first episode he appears in; Farmer has a very different voice compared to the rest of the series. He sounds similar to Poet Smurf with a Southern drawl, likely meaning that he was voiced by Frank Welker.
  • In the Japanese dub, the episode's Japanese name is "スマーフェットの怖い夢" (Sumāfetto no kowai yume) which translates to "Smurfette's Scary Dream", possibly hinting that the episode starts with Smurfette's nightmare or that Papa Smurf will "lost his powers" in that episode. Though the former was correct, but Papa Smurf didn't really lose his powers at all in that episode.

Goofs

Error -2

The inside back part of Smurfette's hair is missing.

  • During Papa Smurf wonders what is wrong with his fast-growing formula and Smurfette says that Papa Smurf is about to lose his power, the inside back part of Smurfette's hair is missing. This is considered an ink and paint mistake because the cel painters forgot to color Smurfette's hair all the way.
  • After Azrael saw Smurfette and Clumsy (after Clumsy almost sneezes), Smurfette's hairstyle, long hair, change into twin tails.
  • After Greedy decides to eat Gargamel's fake cake, He touches the cream, but in the next scene, He touches the chocolate instead of the cream. afterward, the strawberry cream (middle of the cake) disappears.
  • While Greedy and Smurfette leaves Brainy, Greedy's eyebrows disappears.
