"All's Smurfy That Ends Smurfy" is a Season 2 episode from the Smurfs cartoon show.

Characters[]

Synopsis[]

When Gargamel steals the fairy gold, the fairies accuse the Smurfs of stealing it and start a war between them.

Plot Summary[]

Out in the Smurf Forest, Gargamel is looking for tree spores that he can collect for creating a new formula for destroying the Smurfs when he hears some giggling nearby. He at first assumes that it's Smurfs, but upon closer inspection it turns out to be fairies burying something in the ground. After the fairies depart, Gargamel digs up what they have buried and discovers that it's gold, which makes him so happy that he can't wait to spend it on whatever his heart desires. He tells Azrael to wait at home while he goes out shopping and that he will bring his cat a nice surprise when he returns.

Back in the forest, a fairy on horseback sees an overturned tree stump and from that notices that somebody has stolen their gold. Eager to find out who the thieves are, the fairy on horseback hears the sound of woodcutting nearby and goes to investigate. The sound is coming from the Smurfs who are working nearby, and as the fairy approaches them, they scurry out of his way, though he is knocked off the horse by the "surprise" Jokey has left in his path that spooks the horse. The Smurfs come out of cover to inspect the fairy, and Clumsy notices that he is hurt and needs help. Hefty and Handy tell Clumsy that fairies are trouble, and they should just leave him be. As they run off to tell Papa Smurf, the fairy awakens and notices that Clumsy was trailing far behind, making him assume that it's the Smurfs that stole their gold and attacked him, vowing to himself that they won't get away with it.

The Smurfs Find A Fairy
The fairy is knocked off his horse by one of Jokey's surprises.

At the Smurf River Bridge, Papa Smurf is talking with Brainy about finishing repairs on the bridge when the Smurfs, who were sent to do some woodcuttings, return to tell Papa Smurf about the fairy they had met. Papa Smurf asked them if they did anything to help him when he fell off his horse, and they answered that they didn't because they heard that fairies were mean and sneaky and funny-looking. Brainy seems to agree with their decision to leave the fairy be, but Papa Smurf didn't like hearing that his little Smurfs had acted upon rumors and hearsay.

Before he can discuss the matter any further, though, the fairy arrives to tell the Smurfs to hand back the gold they stole, or he shall return in force to take it from them. Papa Smurf tries to tell the fairy that the Smurfs have no need for gold or have any reason to steal it, but the fairy isn't listening and so turns back to gather his forces. Papa Smurf realizes that something is wrong because he knows fairies are normally peaceful, and so he must journey to the fairy kingdom to find out and to solve things peacefully before the fairy makes good on his promise. However, after Papa Smurf departs on Feathers, the Smurfs decide they are going to turn the Smurf Village into a fortress to keep the fairy's forces from overpowering them, showing that they won't let fairies push them around.

Meanwhile, Gargamel enters a human village and buys some new clothes with the gold that he has, singing about all the things he will do now that he has the money to do them with. And then a shady person pulls Gargamel aside with his crook to offer the wizard something in exchange for the gold that he now has so he can find more gold and become richer. After the exchange, Gargamel comes home with his new "gold sniffer", which turns out to be a bear named Nugget. Azrael is frightened at the presence of a bear in his master's residence, but Gargamel is certain that he and Nugget will become the best of friends. The wizard allows Nugget to eat up the pies on his table, for soon he will put the bear to work and then he will become richer.

The fairy on horseback travels through a portal in a tree to his kingdom to tell his mother Queen Lianon that the Smurfs have stolen their gold and have even attacked him. The queen believes that her son is mistaken because she has known Papa Smurf to be honest in his dealings with her. Her son says that the other Smurfs were not like their leader and so he intends to take the fairy cavaliers with him to their village to get their gold back. The queen forbids her son from doing so, saying she won't permit such a thing without proof. Her son believes that the queen is too old to see this thing clearly and thus rides off to engage the Smurfs in force.

Speaking of whom, they are in the village preparing for the fairies' attack by building a fence around its perimeter with a lookout tower. Hefty elects Scaredy to be the first Smurf to man to lookout tower, which makes him afraid, but he bravely takes his position. As Hefty and Handy prepare the catapults, Jokey and Greedy gather things from the kitchen to use as weapons against the fairies, mostly pies and sticky gooey food.

Seeking Gold
Gargamel takes his new pet bear out into the woods to find gold.
Ready The Catapult
Hefty and Handy load up catapults as they prepare for battle.

Papa Smurf enters the portal that takes him to the fairy kingdom, where he talks with its queen, who tells the village leader about what her son Prince Garth has told her about the unfortunate incident. The queen fears that her son would do something foolish, and her fears are confirmed when one of her servants tells her that the prince has gone off with the cavaliers. Papa Smurf tells her that they should go and reason with him before it's too late.

But as Papa Smurf and the fairy queen fly off to intercept the prince and his forces, they are already starting the attack on the Smurf Village. Scaredy sees the cavaliers coming and warns the others, with Harmony playing the signal call to arms. As the Smurfs rush to battle stations, Hefty and some others are launching volleys of berries from their catapults, and one has even launched Lazy towards them. Still, the cavaliers approach the perimeter and the prince has them pull down the fence until it falls. With the Smurfs' defense gone, the fairy forces press on into the village to continue their attack, even flying above them and pelting them with rocks. Nonetheless, the Smurfs continue to bravely hold their own against the fairies.

Out in the forest, Gargamel is now talking his new gold-sniffing pet on a hunt for gold, with the wizard going on and on about what he's going to do with all the gold he will find. And then he notices Nugget eating smurfberries and scolds him for doing that when he should be looking for gold. He tells the bear that he has paid good fairy gold for him and that he expects to get something in return. As Gargamel says this, though, the fairy queen overhears his words as she flies overheard with Papa Smurf, making her realize that he was the real thief, not the Smurfs. Now all they need to do is hope that they can straighten this whole mess out.

As Papa Smurf and the fairy queen arrive in the Smurf Village, they can see that it has been turned into a war zone, with Papa Smurf accidentally attacked by his little Smurfs who are in hiding. Papa Smurf calls for a cease-fire to tell them that there must be peace between the two people, but the fairy prince tells Papa Smurf there will never be peace with thieving Smurfs. The queen tells her son that it wasn't the Smurfs who stole their gold, but the evil wizard Gargamel, and Papa Smurf says that in order to prove their friendship with the fairies, the Smurfs are going to help stop Gargamel from stealing any more of the fairies' gold.

Meanwhile, Gargamel is starting to get frustrated with Nugget's inability to find gold and is considering the possibility of turning his new pet into a rug when he discovers an odd-looking tree that seems to lead somewhere. But the bear pulls him toward another tree that he reaches into and pulls out something yellow and shiny. Gargamel thinks that the bear has found gold at last, but then he sees a swarm of bees coming out of the tree, making him realize that what the bear really found was honey. Gargamel dives into the odd-looking tree to escape the swarm, only to discover that the tree was a portal to another kingdom, the legendary fairy kingdom he has heard about, with gold and jewels in abundance. He is so happy to find this kingdom with nobody left in it to stop him from taking their wealth that he is weeping with joy.

Under Attack
Gargamel gets pelted by the Smurfs and fairies.
Jokey's Gift To The Prince
Jokey gives Prince Garth one of his "surprises".

However, Papa Smurf and the fairies discover that Gargamel has used the portal to travel to the fairy kingdom and also go through the portal. They arrive to see that the kingdom has been plundered, and the prince feels so ashamed that he has left it unguarded that he and Hefty make amends with each other right on the spot. Together the Smurfs and the fairies wait for the wizard to exit the castle with his ill-gotten gains, and then Hefty and the fairy prince use a rope to trip him on the bridge, causing him to fall into the moat. Then the Smurfs and the fairies pelt him with everything they got, with the fairy queen telling the evil wizard that he must leave their kingdom and never return.

Gargamel sees no reason to leave as long as the fairies are using pinecones and acorns as their weapons. But the fairy queen does give him a reason, as she uses her magic to strip the fine clothes off Gargamel, leaving him in his long-johns, and then strike him and Azrael with painful lightning bolts, causing the terrible twosome to head back into the tree and into the regular world.

But as Gargamel departs, Hefty overhears that he will be able to return to the fairy kingdom for all that gold. The fairy queen tells Hefty that Gargamel is mistaken and so uses her magic to remove the tree that serves as a portal between their worlds. Gargamel, after leaving the tree, sees that the tree has now disappeared and with it all the gold he could get his hands on. But then, Nugget shows up with a bees' nest full of his "gold", and this makes the evil wizard run as the swarm of bees chase after him.

In the fairy kingdom, the queen thanks Papa Smurf and the Smurfs for their assistance and now has her son and the cavaliers assist them in rebuilding their village. The fairy prince vows that he will never again be so quick and suspicious to judge others, including Smurfs. However, Jokey pulls a "surprise" on the fairy prince that tests this vow, which in the end makes him laugh at the thought that there are some things you can't trust Smurfs about.

Trivia[]

  • One of the few episodes to be animated at Hanna-Barbera Australia, albeit uncredited.
  • This may be the first episode where Gargamel unexpectedly and unintentionally framed the Smurfs in front of the fairies by stealing the gold, which led Prince Garth to lose his temper and accuse the Smurfs of stealing the gold of the fairies while the Smurfs were unable to explain their innocence because they thought fairies are bad luck (even though it was just a rumor) until Papa Smurf and Queen Lianon put an end to this feud.
  • Smurfette does not appear anywhere in this episode.

Song[]

The lyrics to Gargamel's song are as follows:

I'll buy silk things and jeweled rings,
And a feathered velvet hat.
We'll turn our house into a palace,
Think of that, dear cat!
I'll hire a crew and have them do
Exactly what I say!
A butler, maid, and wizard's aide,
and a personal valet!
We'll have a ship and take a trip
To places near and far;
We'll travel light and see each sight,
From here to Zanzibar.
It's no more hovel, no more grovel,
No more toil as well!
It's first-class seats and satin sheets,
For the rich new Gargamel!
